  1. i think the faster reels work good for pitching and flipping. i use a 6.2:1. i am thinking of getting a 7:1 this year. the faster retrieve lets you pick up line when you have a bight very fast. which in my opinion keeps them from digging deeper in cover and wrapping you up. and these new high speed reels are built very well. these HS reels do not lack in power. i would suggest a shimano curado for your reel if you want a 7:1. i do not have much experience w/ quantums but i do know that shimanos will last and the curado is a great reel.
  2. i will be making a journey to cabela's during spring break (this week) and i am in the market for a new spinning outfit. i am thinking either the shimano symetre or okuma inspira. i have always been a shimano guy, but i have read great things about the okuma spinning reels. i know the shimano will be a good real which is leaning me towards it, unless some of you have a good argument for the okuma
  3. if you have a guide that the ceramic ring has been broken out and needs replacing, what is the best way to remove the wrapping finish from the old guide wraps? shave it off w/ a razor blade/exacto, or sand it off? or something else?
  4. i am hoping to put in my order to mudhole.com tomorrow, and was wondering about guides. i have decided on alconites and was wondering which sizes? would going w/ one of the kits be good or not? i want the guides to be a good fit and look good. if the kit is a bad idea which sizes probably fit well on my blank. it is an allstar 6'8" MH/fast blank. any info would be greatly appreciated.....thanks in advance
  5. we have a couple of farm ponds that are like that. and most of the fish look like that. they have heads that are too big for the rest of their body. i have started taking all of those fish out that i catch. everylthing that is under 1lb or so i keep and eat. that way there is more food for the rest so they can grow.
  6. do you guys use a color preserver on your thread? is it necessary? and if so what kind? i have a pretty good idea on what else i will need...but if you have any less obvious things that i might forget feel free to mention them since i am a first timer.
  7. i was at one of our farm ponds fishing for big bluegills w/ my ultra light and some 1.5" grubs. i had a small tap and i set the hook. as i got it close to the bank i saw it was a very small bass maybe 5-6" long. i had him about 10 ft from the bank when all of a sudden....zzzzziiiiiiinnnnnnggggg. the drag started screaming. when i got it to the bank about a 3#er had tried to eat my baby bass and i caught both of them. but the weirdest part of it was the big bass didn't even have a hook in it's mouth, it just wouldn't let go of the little one.
  8. i too usually kind of "hop" it along. but sometimes if that is not working i will kind of just drag it across the bottom. another thing i do most of the time is use a glass bead between my hook and my brass weight to give it a clicking sound to help attract fish.
  9. i have decided to build a custom rod for myself and am hoping to start pretty soon. but, i don't have a rod dryer, and was wondering if i will be able to dry the rod wrap finish w/o one? and if so how?
  10. those are some sweet looking rods
  11. i poke a hole in the lower jaw. i don't want to put anything near their gills if i don't have to. especially a scale hook, b/c fish almost always seem to flop when you take your hands off of them, and i don't want to risk one flopping and getting the scale hook hooked on one of the gills.
  12. although i haven't used them too too much i have to say dark colors have produced the best for me. tiki stick colors- christmas tree....maybe.....it's greenish black w/ green and red glitter; and black w/ blue glitter
  13. a small pond is alot different physically than a big lake. ponds tend to warm up and cool down alot faster b/c of the smaller amount of water in them. and most ponds are more bowl shaped and don't have distinct points or drop offs. and most don't have alot of cover such as wood or rip rap. so most of the fish hang around vegetation which is usually in shallow water. which is why sometimes you can see fish hitting on top in the shallows during the middle of a 95 degree day.
  14. flechero, that sounds good... ...hopefully i will be able to get started in the near future.
  15. ok, i am planning on attempting to build a rod....notice i said attempting... :-?.... anyways, i already have the blank, well not exactly but flechero knows what i mean.... so what else do i need. i plan on doing a split grip. i know i need cork, epoxy, reel seat, arbor, guides, thread. am i leaving anything out??? thanks in advance jason
  16. if you are a college kid who gets a summer job, not to pay tuition for next fall.....but to pay for that new $250 reel you've had your eye on!!! ;D
  17. why swimbaits work! he is saying they work b/c they immitate big fish that bigger fish eat....which is what that video shows, a big fish getting eatin by an even bigger fish.
  18. me and my family eat bass all the time. we catch them out of our farm ponds and fillet them up. we keep them to keep the ponds from becoming over populated. and personally i think other than crappie, bass are the best tasting freshwater fish. i think they are way better than any catfish i have ever eaten. our ponds have very clear, clean water so they don't have a fishy or dirty taste at all as do most catfish, or at least to me they do. but is all a matter of preference. i know people that swear fried catfish are the best thing ever. p.s. we usually fry the bass, but have blackened them also which is very good.
  19. my academy is carrying the gambler swim blade chatterbaits. they only had 2 colors, black/blue, and gold bluegill. the only thing is they were kind of hidden. i wouldn't even have known they had them if i hadn't heard a guy talking on the phone telling someone else they had them. they were on the bottom row by all the crappie jigs....i don't have a clue why, but that's where they were. and they don't come in a very attractive package, no colors or big words, they were just in a small plastic package, w/ a sticker on them.
  20. flechero, on the rod you built w/ the blue rings in the handle, what are they? reel mech, i was thinking about that too....i don't know if they are needed or not, but i really like the way they look. im guessin that nobody makes a regular arbor that would be that big in O.D.?
  21. i was looking at justtrying's posts on the rods he is modifying the grips into split grips. and the graphite rings in the handle for sensativity that all pro puts in their rods seem like a great idea, and they look cool. so the question is, do any of you have a clue where i could find these rings to put into a handle myself??
  22. i have had as much luck w/ the tiki sticks as w/ my senkos. but as many have said they are much cheaper and last longer than 1 fish.
  23. i am wanting to sink a couple brush piles in our stock tank (pond to those of you not from central TX.... ;D) what types of wood work best for this??? i was thinking some cedar trees.... :-/
  24. i think a 6'6" rod would be a good choice. keep the rod tip down when twitching. (a longer rod can hinder this) and i usually don't reel as i am twitching. i reel, twitch, reel, twitch, etc. i usually give it about 3-4 twitches then pause, but change it up on the retrieve, sometimes twitch it 5 or 6 times before you pause. (hope this isn't confusing, im just saying don't twitch 3 times, pause, twitch 3 times, pause the whole retrieve, vary it a little) and what lure are you using, try something like a spook, they are super easy to walk.
