  1. Perfect Tom. The comment about reacting quickly with jigs is different than what I thought. Thanks. Going out monday and testing a bunch of different jigs with trailers for an upcoming tourney, so I will let you know how it goes. I have to cast about 50+', then let it drop 40' down, so I have well over 60' of line out when jigging.
  2. Well, the lake finally thawed, so me and a buddy hooked up the boat and went fishing. Unloaded the boat, ran for a minute and quit. Couldn't get it started. Looked at the usual cutoff switch and lanyard still attached. Decided to use the trolling motor to SLOWLY get to the closest point, into the wind, so we could get back easily. Long story short, got it home and started checking everything out. Called my mechanic and he said to cycle the cutoff switch just in case. Of course, that was it The lanyard was still attached, but the switch had moved slightly down, though not all the way. At least learned how long the trolling motor would go on high
  3. Dave, I will check out the video, thanks. Catt, I NEVER said it wasn't me. In fact, that is why the title is "Help ME with better hooking technique". I never blamed my gear. Simply asked for help with my technique. I want as many pointers as I can get from experienced guys, in a helpful way. As for the ignorance comment, the definition is incomprehension or unaware of. We have never met, so you do not know what I am doing wrong, since you haven't seen me try a hookset. The word ignorance is mistaken many time for a slam, I was simply saying you can't tell me what I am doing wrong since you haven't watched. You could however, give me advice as to what works for you. Either way, if you want to continue OUR conversation, I sent you a PM. I would like this to be helpful for others that are having the same problems, rather than a P-contest. Either way, thank you for the 3 helpful posts you gave prior to #32.
  4. Tom, You teach in a respectful way. I have been military for 20 years. I don't need anymore condescending types "teaching" me, when there are good guys like you and many others out there. Catt, gave good advice in 3 prior posts on page 2, but then came #32. There is no reason to act like that. Maybe I took it wrong, but I really don't see how else to take : Couple seconds? Assuming they are taking it in their mouth? Help Me With Better Hooking Technique! Again, thank you for your time and advice.
  5. How hard is that to say in a helpful way? Put aside the other minutia you wrote and summarize by saying, "Don't over think it, simply set the hook." See how easy it is to be kind to people? I am guessing you would if we were in person. See Tom's example, along with many others. They have heard this question before, but were kind enough to answer.
  6. Either you are saying this out of blatant ignorance or you have watched me fish and can tell me what I'm doing wrong. Since we haven't met, I'm assuming you're ignorant and bored.
  7. Catt, Can I help you? Not sure what your point is. Feel free to clarify.
  8. I use braid religiously. As for "hook sets are free", I thought they said the "when in doubt, set the hook" adage was not correct? If the best hook setters are using it, then so will I.
  9. Thanks for understanding Tom. Speed isn't a a problem reflexively. It is that I am not sure if that little hit is actually in its mouth or just a hit and leave. As for hooks, do they REALLY matter that much from the chinese made ebay specials to trokar??
  10. That is great Tom! That is what I was looking for! More advice is definitely welcome though.
  11. Great input guys. Keep it coming. I will check out those above mentioned vids. As for C-rig, I will set to the side with a sweep. Jigs are still a little cloudy.
  12. I'm hooking probably 1/3 with jigs. As for C rigs, probably less. Thanks for the above advice guys. I will try it out Friday. Keep the advice coming.
  13. I have been watching all the videos I can find about how to hook better. I enjoy deep jig fishing or carolina rig in 40 ft. It seems when I watch these guys, they get a tap, reel down with a little slack for a couple seconds, then set the hook at 2 or 10 oclock over their head. As for me, I feel a tap, and go to jerking. Is there a specific feeling I should get? When I feel the tap, should I reel down while keeping a little slack in the line, then set the hook a couple seconds after the initial tap assuming they are taking it in their mouths? Thanks guys.
  14. +2 for St Croix. If you don't mind a repaired rod, you can find factory repaired (like new) St Croix rods on ebay for cheap. Generally around $50. I have a couple and LOVE them. My drop shotter is a Legend Tournament Bass that is 2" short, so 6'6" ML XF. I can't tell a difference, but it is amazing to fish with. PM me if you have more questions.
  15. Thx. I'll check it out.
  16. THanks again guys. I just signed up for the FLW. I will check out the Rayovac series. Don't know a thing about that.
  17. How are you guys fishing that zoom ol monster?? Carolina or texas rig?
  18. Hey BL, I just hate to waste the ones I have and I want my frogs to float. I am new to this, so ask me again next year and I will want them to sink like a rock As for the Damiki air frog, does anyone have first hand experience with it? Good/bad?
  19. Thanks for the advice. The more I learn, the better. I took a drill bit, heated it with my heat gun and honed out a hole across the body of the frog. I then placed a piece of styrofoam (my wife hid my darn ear plugs again!) and I tried it. Helped a little, but still didn't stay floating. I think I will just order some damiki air frog types when i find a sale. I will try to injector when I can get a big hypodermic needle.
  20. I am trying to make the two packs of Zoom Toads I have work. I want to work on the jerk jerk pause method.
  21. There has to be a little bubble that can be pressed in or something to help. I have googled and youtubed this and nothing. Someone must have a good idea.
  22. Actually, a little JJs is the key in that scenario Good luck to you too.
  23. Scared me for a minute Trailer It made me question my limited knowledge when he was so adamant about getting a mod action with mono. I will keep you gents posted as the year goes by to see if I can make it work for me.
  24. I tried them without a hook and SOME of them float fine, but once that 4/0 wide gap is set, they sink. Any ideas how to get them to float? I googled it and came up with no ideas. Thanks.
