  1. ok so im not sure where to go but hate driving so I will avoid the northern part of the state. I don't mind camping but a cabin would also be nice if it is on a small private lake. I will be on a float tube and kayak so I want to avoid large lakes with heavy boat traffic, especially jet skiers. I enjoy topwater so im looking for places with lilies too. all suggestions are appreciated.
  2. so I fished a few locations with a nice lunker at a reservoir. apparently they electro shocked and killed all the large bass in lake Tahoe to save all the trout. joke is on them, there are thousands of small bass in the 4-6 inch range. I will return in 5 years for some non stop action.
  3. I was thinking of doing a fishing trip to maine in a few weeks. I am told that the bass fishing is supposedly amazing. has anyone here ever rented a cottage or cabin by a lake with kayaks or canoes? all pointers are appreciated. if any members here are from maine and would like to join me or show me the ropes I will gladly return the favor in ny.
  4. thanks for the advice and help. I will be in staying in pinole. I am planning on bringing all of my own gear. zeth, pm sent.
  5. I will be visiting a friend on july 24-28 in san Francisco. while there I am looking to fish but I am a bit clueless. this will be my first time on the west coast. if anyone will be fishing in san Francisco or lake Tahoe that weekend and let me join them or could give me advice , it would be greatly appreciated. I would gladly return the favor if you ever come to the east coast.
  6. thanks for the pm. I see them listed around $200, usually a little less. I need a transom mount because I have it mounted to my kayak which has no trolling motor for many reasons.
  7. after much research as to why my hummingbird 798ci hd si isn't showing clear side imaging, I have found that I need to get the hd transducer. if anyone has a used one in good condition or knows where they can be found for less than the new asking price, please let me know. model number is XHS-9-HDSi-180-T
  8. coral gables has some creeks and freshwater ponds that should have them. try small jerk baits and spinners at fast retrieve. if you are in Islamorada, I would focus on the tarpon run right now and maybe some cuda from shore.
  9. i was hoping to use lures mostly. i'm bringing jerk baits, spoons, poppers, and a few hooks if i can grab some shrimp off the boat. is there a bait/tackle shop nearby? looking at google earth i see a nice area across the highway by the channel on the west side. is that preferable to the pier since there would be less pressure? i will be using light bass gear but can handle most fish up to 20 lbs. (medium rod and shimano sustain 2500).
  10. i am going on a cruise to escape the lousy northeast weather. i will be stopping at port canaveral on tuesday feb 24 for several hours. i was wondering if anyone can give me some advice on the fw or sw fishing nearby (where to go and what lures are working). i will try my luck near the port for sw but not sure what is in season now. all advice is appreciated. if anyone is free and wants to fish, it would be great. i have my own gear and never fished orlando before, all help and advice is appreciated.
  11. the river really needs a shad kill. last time i was there, it was loaded with them.
  12. thank you Wayne for your help. i truly appreciate it.
  13. here are some more with the settings. i can see structure with down imaging but side imaging shows maybe a blur if i am lucky. this includes dock pilings.
  14. sorry it has taken so long to respond. it has been a busy bunch of months. so here are pictures of how the fishfinder is mounted on my kayak as well as snapshots of the images i see. the snapshots were taken on smooth calm water so the kayak wasnt rocking side to side.
  15. i havent fished west palm beach in a while. i know that there are some snakehead in that area. there are lots of fishermen on this forum that know the area well. go to the introductions page and introduce yourself. im sure they would be glad to help.
  16. thought i would get more responses. is this an area that most ppl here dont fish?
  17. that sounds like an amazing day. i am jealous being stuck up north.
  18. so this was my experience fishing near wheeler dam. north of the dam was filled with billions of shad. the bass bite was not happening. i tried using all the lures in my arsenal and caught only a 12 inch largemouth on a lipless crank. the shad was so thick that my crankbait would hook them 2 at a time. below the d**n i kayaked the shallows. i caught one smallmouth on a spinnerbait and hooked into a decent largemouth which jumped and spit the spinnerbait out. on a gold jerkbait i caught several small largemouth in the 9-12 inch range. they wouldnt take any senko, poppers, or anything else. while trolling a rapala shad rap i caught a 9 inch white bass. lots of shad ranging from large schools of 2-3 inches and some smaller schools of 5-8 inches. i saw some very large bass but they wouldnt hit anything i threw at them. maybe it was all of the bait in the water, maybe it was the cold front that came in. there was frozen rain on the morning of the 13th. any advice on what i can do would be appreciated.
  19. visiting family and caught a smallmouth off the dock using a spinnerbait, no action on any other lures. i got a kayak but was looking for advice. it was pretty windy today but shouldnt be too bad tomorrow. i look fwd to the rain in the afternoon. i have never fished in alabama before so i was wondering what lures work better than others. how would i fish for catfish and carp? i am at a house on the water about a mile from the dam. all info is appreciated. if anyone is going to be fishing by boat i would gladly cover fuel and expenses. i appreciate all help.
  20. i will be wading. plan to go to a few rivers and lakes. what kind of salmon are running? i tend to stay away from snagging and lifting, i try to keep focus on fishing. i would like to focus on smallmouth and northern pike. i am willing to travel an hour iin any directions. will be with a friend but he tells me all the water here is under high fishing pressure. i appreciate the help. are the bass actively feeding or are they slowing down with the drop in temperature? what lures are good this time of year for lakes and rivers? i was thinking of senko, spinnerbait, swimbait, and jerkbait to name a few.
  21. i plan to head to chicago to visit some family for the first time in early novemeber. i was told the fishing there is pretty good. i havent fished this region before so i would appreciate if anyone had some info. i will be located in west rogers park. i want to focus on bass, pike, and trout. what do the bass and others seem to prefer in this region? is a specific lure or color work better than others? how is the bite this time of year? has fishing slowed down due to the temperature drop? if anyone can help with info or even guide me for a few days ( this is likely going to be my only trip to chicago for several years, if ever) it would be appreciated. i have a lot of experience in ny so i wonder if the techniques differ and would gladly return the favor. thanks.
  22. i will try to post pictures later this week as a reference. thanks for the help.
  23. i bought a humminbird 798 hd si fishfinder in may. this was my first fishfinder. i custom mounted it to my kayak and made sure there was no obstructions to the transducer. it reads depth and the side imagining will tell me how far the shore is. the issue is that the side imaging is showing no detail or structure. going over trees that the down imaging will show to the best of its ability, is showing up as a dark small blur on the side imaging, if it even shows up. i see no detail on structure in the water and adjusted the settings multiple times. i spoke with humminbird who had me send in the unit. they found nothing wrong with the unit so now i spent more money sending it in and continue to suffer the same issues. any advice is appreciated. i just feel like the images that they show on the booklet seems to be unrealistic marketing. i dont see trees or branches, stones, boulders, or anything for that matter.
  24. i see this too when fishing in florida and new york. many of them dont care about the law and just want a free meal they can brag about. i think the big issue with caring for sw is that the ocean is so vast and the fish you release will be moving along never to return, and many new fish will be there to replace it within a few hours. i think we all know this is a false mentality, but the size of the ocean kind of plays on those ideas.
