  1. Thank you for your service, plumworm! It's men like you that have made it possible for all of us to be on BR talking about fishing. God bless. FL Also, I enjoyed the music and have varied tastes. For the younger gents on BR that may not be aware, this is a classic!
  2. Bragging on how much of a deal I get on something is what makes me tick I buy good gear, not the very best, but choose that gear because it's the minimum level I need to handle what I put it through. It has nothing to do with one-upping anybody, never has. Not to mention, I refuse to pay full price for anything (unless it's discontinued or very rare) and buy bulk as often as I can. I'm a private person and don't flaunt my stuff, whether the stuff is good or bad, but I've never been jealous of anybody either. Work, save your money, and buy good gear if you're jealous. Better yet, don't get jealous because it's just some metal and plastic anyways. I'm jealous of you guys who have your dads to fish with. Now that's something worthy of jealousy! FL
  3. it's a confidence thing. I change any used line before every tournament. Tends to be often but feeling the little bumps in the line from the layers of line makes me think its strength has been compromised. 0119, you're correct, it's just a style thing. And there are no matching combos in my boat that I know of I don't know if Japanese mono is thinner but I use 25# mono for flippin' when working heavy wood. I never needed more than 20 yds, so 50 would be plenty in this case.
  4. BPS FC is pretty good stuff. One of the few BPS branded items I'll buy. They are changing their line now so hurry and get some. FL
  5. I'm just surprised so many people use braid for crankin! Also, I like the 3000yd spools, I change line constantly and it saves some cash this way. FL
  6. One Blade on my 21' rig. May add a second but love the look of just one. My partner doesn't have issues casting and sometimes he just eases it down one foot if he wants to side cast. Oh yeah.....I love having it one the boat! FL
  7. I do remember such a video. I don't remember the line used but regardless, it was a great video. No idea how much force is used by a bass to eat a bait but do believe braid could pull a crank away too fast. Similar to a frog bite and having to delay a moment. I'm happy to learn something new, these are my thoughts.
  8. LOL, yes that is true, too hard of a hookset. Old habits die hard and I'll stick to the hard hookset with mono. I may be wrong but by watching your rod tip, you can usually see the bite before you feel it, with mono, and not many bites go undetected. Sure there will be some, but that goes for any kind of line. A bass can hit a crank and be gone before anyone detects it with any line type. I'm sure you are aware of that already, so nothing new really. FC is a good choice for deeper water but under 10', mono works fine for me. Don't you feel that as a fish inhales a crank, mono stretches and allows the fish to get it? I've read this argument before and most people didn't like braid because it doesn't allow a fish to inhale the bait. What has changed since I read this?
  9. I remember those Crème pre-rigs. My first bass caught me on a pre-rig also. A K&E BasStopper. I fished at a younger age but first bass I remember perfectly, I was 13 years old. BasStoppers are still made today and I suggest them to newbies all the time.
  10. You'll catch bigger carp with Tecate, it's specific for carp! My issue with TS rods is that I feel they are of lesser quality than the series they replaced. Shimano's Crucial line in particular. Also the fact that a rod may say "Flipping" on it while I may use it for dropshot. To the manufacturers: DON'T PUT NAMES ON THEM!!!!
  11. Welcome to the forum! I also had one of these little bad boys. A similar one, actually, and loved it. FL
  12. Yes, you can loosen the drag, but why do that when you can hit em hard with mono? Personal preference, I guess. For me the correct tool for cranks is a M/MH rod with mono, so I can set the hook hard while the line and rod play the fish and not rely as much on drag to do the work. I use braid and love it, but not for crankbaits. Again, personal preference and there is no "right" answer and there's several ways to skin a cat. I just like those hard hooksets and consider bassfishing a contact sport And I couldn't agree more, most fish are lost at the boat during that final surge.
  13. It's fair to believe everybody has some regrets. But no dwelling is allowed so we must look forward. I spent the first 20 years of life doing things I'd regret for the next 10 years followed by more than 10 looking forward. Haven't looked back since. I make what I can of life going forward and forget what can drag me down. Some people mentioned things akin to wishes........mine would be to have my family back! Outside of my mom, all have passed unexpectedly, suddenly, and young. Nothing matters besides family, and my wife and kids are my one and only priority with everything else being second. Well.....fishing is second and then everything else FL
  14. Congrats on your second! I'm sure it's tough knowing you just can't win. The payoff is good though, kids are great!
  15. Wait just a minute before you discard mono for it's elasticity. Sometimes that is exactly what you will want. Setting the hook on crankbaits, I want my line to have some stretch. It allows me to use a slightly stiffer rod (for sensitivity) and I don't have to sacrifice hook setting power. With braid, you will either tear the hooks out of the fish or will have to use a very whippy rod to avoid it. FL
  16. Oh, I see, it's because she's expecting! Well then, you have no retort, whatsoever! She is correct on all accounts and you will agree. lol In that case, tail between the legs and a loud "yes dear" is all that's needed out of you Been there, done that, we have several little FL's running around the house. Unfortunately, when the kids were young, it meant some lean times for fishing. I made it a point to spend every minute with my kids and wife if I wasn't fishing or working. Congrats to you guys! Your first child?
  17. Oh boy, this topic! Happens all the time with men and their toys and wives. I don't hear much, if ever, about fishing stuff because there's more than just fishing stuff, but the argument can be the same with all hobbies. Sometimes I hear, "wow, you have a lot of stuff!". I just reply that I could have spent the money at a bar or a strip club like some men spend their money. We both laugh because neither of us drink and the subject changes. I never say a word about her spending habits and sometimes remind her of that. One thing though, my wife always supports my fishing and tries to help with some of the work involved with sponsors, schedules for our kids events, etc. She does support my silly fishing hobby. Raider, I know it may hurt to hear her negative comments and you need to change her perspective. Show her some trophies, if you fish tournaments, or bring some filets home and justify the price of the hobby. It may not happen overnight but slowly change her perspective. Remind her it's healthy to fish as it keeps you out of trouble or bars, etc. FL
  18. A 3 bank is nice because you don't need 2 electrical lines running to the boat. One plug and done. I have an outlet in my boat, not a cord, so I just plug a cord right into the boat. Simple and effective with no extension cords running around. FL
  19. Wanted not needed. I even think 7.4 is too fast for frogs. But that's just my opinion FL
  20. Mice get tired and drown eventually, frogs don't Same thing in my opinion too. FL
  21. Son! Get you some! Makes me shivver! One word, GORGEOUS! FL
  22. I missed AOY by 1 dead fish....less than .5 lb! I was devastated. This was as a co-anger many years ago. Got retribution with AOY a few years ago, on the pro side I wish this year would start already! We still have 2 feet of ice to melt and I'm guessing NY does also. Brutal.
  23. Sounds like a good bunch you have there! I'm sure a cement bass would get the nod, even in more serious competitions A true bag decoy! I brought my daughter's pillow, one of those silly 4' tall bass pillows from BPS to a tourney. It was great for a laugh when pulled out of a storage compartment next to the livewells. FL
  24. Lol, the Northern Ouch for the Bump Master Sandbaggers make me laugh. When I have a bag that I really think has a chance to win, I try to weigh first (or close to it). It makes the sandbaggers sick. The "bigger culls release" is a new one for me. I love it, I may borrow it, thank you
  25. Gents and Ladies I fish a number of tournaments throughout the year and I have seen some silly things people do, myself included. A few examples; During a morning takeoff, I saw a boat leave and make a hard right, he ran approx. 200 yards away and stopped to fish in the middle of nowhere. As I left the takeoff area I entered into a no-wake and looked at that fist boat, he turned to the left and went off. Clearly he was just waiting for boats to leave so he could go in a direction not seen by other boats....a direction decoy. Almost can't blame a team for something like this if they have been doing well, some people follow boats around to steal fishing spots. On another occasion, as I passed a tournament boat while fishing, I was being cordial and asked if the team's day was going well. The fisherman said he had 2 fish. A couple hours later, at weigh-in, he had a limit.....a bag decoy. I will admit to dropping my bait low into the water as I pass other tournament boats, so they don't get a peek at my bait. My partner puts a shirt or towel over his rods to hide his baits. Or I may leave a couple rods with baits on the deck at weigh-in but they aren't what was used that day or tournament.....bait decoy. Sounds paranoid but I fish with some discontinued baits and a few baits that I'm sure nobody uses. Have you done something like this? Have you seen other decoys? Please share. FL
