Blanks or carving
BASSWOOD: It is a very soft wood, similar to eastern white pine, but without the strong grain structure. It does not bend well, but does dry easily with little downgrade. It does shrink alot on drying though, but remains stable afterwards . This info from the woodbox.com I've done alot of carving and found that basswood is probably the best for me. Shapes easily and also when setting ballast weight, it also glues very well.

What Kind of Fish is this?
Plecostomus is what you have there. Somebody must have dumped an aquarium.

Giant Bass II
Lake Casitas: Big Bass Paradise By Mike Blackwell The heaviest bass ever caught at Casitas weighed 21.19 pounds, just shy of the 70-year-old world record of 22-4 set by George Perry in 1932 in Montgomery, Ga. Ray Easley caught the Casitas record on March 4, 1980, on a live crawdad. I agree you have to be in the right place at the right time. Jerry

Wood Sealer Question
I would use a clear sealer. Most of all stain such as Minwax will not hold paint.

REBC guest speaker
Redwood Empire Bass Club is having it's monthly meeting on May 13 at 7:00 pm. It's at the Community Center in Rohnert Park on the corner of Snyder Lane and Expressway. We'll be having one of the finest guides from the Delta, Mr. Andy Cuccia. I would suggest bringing a pad and paper. There will be a raffle afterward. Hope to see you there. Due to an illness in the family, Mr. Cuccia will be postponing his appearance until the June meeting.... Jerry Wilson REBC charter member

Nor-Cal X2 Nor-Cal X3, we try not to boast about how big the fish are out here.

convince me to move to Colorado
I don't want to sound like a jerk, but why would you move to an area where it snowed? In an area like Colorado, I would have to admit it is very beautiful, but in the winter it snows. Lakes freeze, it gets super cold, you need chains etc to get around. Move to an area like California. I live in Santa Rosa, where I can go in any direction and have some of the greatest fishing around. 45 minutes, I'm at the beach. 1 1/2 hours, I'm at Clear Lake, where Steve Kennedy caught 122 lbs of fish in 4 days, 1 1/2 hours, I'm at Lake Berryessa, where we have largemouth, smallmouth, spots, and one of the float tube clubs (SCBBBC) had their tourney and big fish was 11.92. In 5 hours I can be at Lake Shasta, or 5 hours to Reno, Nevada if you like. We have it all. Where ever you choose to live, I hope you enjoy it and prosper. Just my .02.

Progressive Lunker
It sounds like a big fish pot that continues to grow until that size fish has been caught. Whom ever catches that fish wins all the money.

REDWOOD EMPIRE BASS CLUB
Our first tourney was a success as always. It was a team tourney and my partner came in 2nd place at Lake Sonoma. Were having our second meeting of the year on Feb. 11, (which is the second Wednesday) at 7pm. We're located at the Rohnert Park Community center off of Snyder Lane. The second tourney will be held at Lake Berryessa on Sat. the 21 of Feb. If you would like to visit our web site http://rebc.net/.

tubing in very cold water. Waders?
The coldest I've fished in my tube was 43* water. Neoprene waders two pairs of socks, jeans, quilted thermals, sweat shirt, tee shirt, knit hat, and a jacket. I was very warm, but make sure to tell someone where you're going and when you'll be back. Hypothermia is not fun.

painting eyes
I've used a pencil eraser, if it's brand new it will make a perfectly round imprint. I test it on a piece of paper to see how much pressure and paint is necessary to make the eye, but I've gotten lazy in my old age or should I say smarter and I've found some eyes at a local tackle shop and they're almost perfect. They're the soft type, I hope they don't break down when putting on the epoxy. The next batch of crankbaits will have the new eyes and we'll see how they look.

strangest things caught?
The idea of a rock isn't strange but what happened while catching the rock. We were fishing Clear Lake here in California and fishing an area called Bass Alley, there is a really great break there. I was throwing a deep diving crankbait, when it stopped dead in it's tracks. I set the hook and the fight was on. What had happened the rock became dislodged from were it was at and started down the break, well I thought I had a world class fish on that bait it gave me everything I wanted and then some. Well long story short, my partner had the net ready and then we saw the rock. I did land it by the way. I was almost perfectly round an was covered with small holes and both treble hooks had a hold of it and it wasn't getting away. I venture to say it was probably 6 lbs, but it seemed much more during the "fight".

epoxy on lips
Thanks ernel. Exactly.

epoxy on lips
On the plastic baits I use it's a non issue but on a wooden bait you want to seal that edge where the bill enters the bait really well so you don't get any water intrusion.

Puzzled!!
I would imagine this web site could help too. http://bassresource.com/fish/bass_fish.html This site has more info than you can read. That is the operative word here "READ".

Any trap shooters out there?
Bizz don't misunderstand me, the club took this upon themselves to forbid lead, no other governing body required this to happen. The property is owned by the club.

Any trap shooters out there?
I'm going to join a local sportsman's club that has trap shoots a couple of times a month. With the advent of no lead shot, they only shoot steel. Now my question is can you shoot steel shot through an older shotgun, let's say circa 1980's to 1990's? I used to shoot trap back in the day when I went to the University of Montana. We had an extra curricular (sp) activity which was a trap and skeet class. I used a Remington 870 pump. I really liked the way it felt and I was looking to purchase a trap model, but if I have to buy a new one so be it. Thanks in advance.

I Made Some Photo-Finish Crankbaits
There are no words, but WOW!!!

A few I've painted
Thanks for the kind words. Natural, I've been using Createx (sp) colors and trying to come up with some natural combos. Although, where I live there aren't many chartruse (sp) fish. But there is an American shad which I tried to copy which is the one on top. The middle is a blue gill but the picture really doesn't do it justice.

Still more cranks
I really like your color combinations.

A few I've painted
These are plastic bodies from one of the tackle suppliers mentioned on this site. I sanded the mold lines off top and bottom then sanded all over for the primer to bite. After paint, coat with the 2 Ton epoxy.

Got a few more under my belt...
Cootertom, if you're using a digital camera, there should be a macro setting to get a super close up without being blurry. On my camera, Cannon Power shot A75, it's an icon of a flower. You might have something similar.

Deep Divers
Eric, Marty, thanks for the info. Eric, what you posted is a little much to absorb right now. I'll work on the lip angle of 8 to 11 degrees. Now, is that off of center line from the front to back through the hook eye in back? If so I've got it. It will be a while before I get back to my shop, honey-do's you know, anyone that's married will know what I'm talking about. Jerry
