I like to use the water based paints. Createx etc, with automotive paints you do need to use acetone to clean your air brush, other tools and yourself and some sort of vent system, not so with the water based paints.

Thanks a lot for the info. I patterned it after a Poe. I'll move the line tie out and make a longer lip as well. Do you find that your diving lips may flex because of the length? With the pressure against the lip to get it to dive, it seems the lip would flex quite a bit.

Well here she is it's one of the first I tried. I moved the line tie once and reinstalled the diving bill. I hope this picture is ok to tell.

I have a hard time getting the weight forward just right. I have a tendency to get the dreaded spins with my deep diving baits. They go fine for a few feet and then blow out.

You should seal the bait with paint or a clear sealer and let dry for 24 hours. Drill the hole for the ballast weight and place the amount of weight you see fit, like BIG M said, 1/16th to start. Cover the hole with tape and then place the bait in a sink of water to check and see how it sits. If it lists to one side another words, leans to one side you must make an adjustment. This is really trial and error. The bait builders like BIG M have it down to a science.

If you don't add ballast, it's nothing more than a piece of wood.

  11. All it takes is a bunch of friends getting together and fishing. That's the bottom line. After a couple of meetings you can iron out things like were you want to fish each month. Then comes rules, or not. We have a president, v.p., treasurer, tournement director, and social director which takes care of raffles and where we have the awards banquet at the end of the year. Just click on Redwood Empire Bass Club. That is our website and there is rules and so on to check out. I hope this helps.

  15. While fishing bass alley on Clear Lake here in California, I was throwing a deep diving crankbait fishing the break, when my crankbait was hammered. It just stopped dead and then started to move off. I set the hook again and the fight was on. Once I got it to the boat, it was a round rock about 3 lbs. The fight was when it rolled down the break to the bottom.
  16. I'm a Giant's fan but we won't go there, D'oh, so I had to get behind the team I thought that had a chance to go all the way, GO TIGERS!!!! I really dislike the A's and everyone out here said that Kenny Rogers couldn't pull it off again like he b#$@$h slapped the Yankee's.
  17. Thanks guys, but I am not even in Whittler's league. Whittler makes some superior baits and I would not compare mine to his. Although Whittler has encouraged me on getting better. And no, I don't sell them, sorry. Thanks again for the kind words. Thomas, yes, I use white from a rattle can for a base. Then once it's dry, I rough it up a bit so the paint will bite. The latest bait was custom color mix I made up. Lemon yellow, neon green and pearl white for the chartruse and chartruse and blue for the teal color on top.
  18. Thomas, I use Createx acrylic airbrush paint. You can use it right out of the container and shoot it on, or you can thin it with distilled water. I purchase mine at Micheal's.
  19. Those of you in the Northern California area are more than welcome to come and be a part of the http://rebc.net. We have been around since 1981 and are looking for new members. Our meetings are at the Rohnert Park community center on the second Wednesday of the month at 7pm. We have scheduled lake sites to fish through out the year and boaters and non-boaters are paired together by a blind draw. The majority of the tourneys are team tournaments and two are draws. In December we have a turkey shoot which is open to one and all. So come on out and we'll see you at the next meeting. Jerry, carter member
  20. It has been chaotic here after our dog had to have surgery on her ccl, (acl on a human) we've had to watch her like a hawk so she dosen't destroy what the vet repaired. So, no jumping, no running etc. We have to carry her outside to let her do her business ( you get my drift) anyway so not much doing at my house except keep an eye on Katie. I did sneak down to the garage to paint a couple.
  21. Wulf, we have several members from Novato as well. It is my pleasure. We have a great club. We fish the Delta, Clear Lake, Berryessa, Sonoma, Shasta, etc. Typically these are the lakes we fish the most. Shasta being a two day away tourney in the spring and the others during the year (hopefully at the peak of each.) We have some great sticks in the club and will welcome any and all new comers.
  22. I've responded to some of your posts and I know Vacaville is a distance from Rohnert Park but you are more than welcome to visit our bass club. The meetings are the second Wednesday of the month at the Rohnert Park comunity center at 7:00 pm. We have members as far away as Dixon. The Redwood Empire Bass Club club has been around since 1980 and like all clubs we have a fluctuating membership. Come and visit you may fish with us and be hooked.
  23. fishingaddict, the first one and the fourth one is pine, the second one is redwood, and the third one is bass wood. I started out using a knife but got a great deal on a Dremel and it has made things so much eaiser. If I want to change them a little, I'll use the knife because I have more control over the situation.
  24. I guess the crankbait bug has really got me now. I spend a lot of time in the garage with sawdust on me, and now my wife is calling me Geppetto.
  25. Aprox an hour and a half from my house, I can be at some of the greatest fisheries in the state of California. Why would I want to go anywhere else?
