HANDHELD GPS
I work at Gander Mountain here in MN and we sell the lowrance H20 probably close to 20 to 1 it is that good of a unit. the thing i think that helps it is that the Lake master software available is plug and play you don't have to search for files and load them it is automatic as soon as you turn the unit on it's there. and there is nothing to download to a computer. I will vouch for it's accuracy by giving an example. I use it on mille lacs lake a bit and it is a pretty flat bottomed lake except for the reefs and when the unit says you are comming up on a reef you look at the depth finder and watch it climb. incredible. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face the first time i used it there. it is such a big lake that it can take a long time to find a flat with out one. I can troll the edge of a flat all day and not even need to look at the depth finder. if you don't have the chip or some other soft ware the accuracy does suffer alittle bit it's like the whole map is shifted alittle but the software should fix that problem. as for lakemaster chips I only have experience with the minnesota one but it gives you something like 570 lakes and all the roads in MN for only $100. the unit starts at $169 black and white, $269 color or i-finder hunt black and white, $369 for the hunt color. In all i would say the best value and the most user friendly. just remember garmin is a great unit but their money comes from aviation so thats were the focus is, Lowrance focuses on recreation, the person who doesn't have time to read through the manual or money to invest in a gps. and their customer service is awsome. pm me if you would like more info.

Trolling Motor Battery
for a canoe a 30# thrust will be plenty. for a battery as long as it is a deep cycle it will work. for a canoe you will probably want a smaller one because of the weight. i use trojan batteries the scs 150 should be fine for the 30# thrust. my guess is that you will get between 6 and 8 hours on a charge depending how you use the motor. if you spend alot of time in weeds or running full speed it will be less.

depth/fish finders
i second that. for the price it cant be beat. it sells for $169 up here in mn. 1500 watts which is decent 320x320 pixels. and a very easy menu to operate. the fishmark 480 is pretty good to, basicly the same unit but with a 480x480 pixel screen. and it sells for $199.99

how do you start fishing on a new lake?
so i went out this morning to a new lake. when i got there at 6am there was no wind not a cloud in the sky and a little fog rising off the water picture perfect. now i love fishing top water so i started throwing a smaller zara spook-nothing. so i tried a spro frog-nothing so i tried a shallow running crankbait-nothing.so a while passed and and the wind picked up so i opted for a texas rigged curley tail worm-nothing. deep cranks-nothing. i was marking the occasional fish at the bottom edge of the drop off i tried a carolina rig-nothing. so i keep boating around trying different areas there is no developed shoreline so i couldn't fish docks. i keep seeing fish jumping and finally at 9:30 i catch a little 2 pounder on a senko covered in mega strike. so i fish that for 1/2 hour more-nothing. it was like my first time all over again. the lake is supposed to be holding some pretty good fish according to numerous customers at work (gander mountain). so i am wondering what did i do wrong and how do you start out on a new lake.

Weedless Wedge 2
supposedly the ww2 gives 5 lbs more thrust. i have had both the old one and the new one and havent noticed much difference. both were 55# thrust. the prop does seem to be a tad more weedless.

Experienced anglers, what would you do? **UPDATE**
have you looked into trolling motors and depthfinders? they are getting cheaper. i would look into a 30# thrust endura motor by minnkota they sell for $109 and you can get a depth finder for pretty cheap as well. i use an eagle fishmark 320. 1500 watts of power 320 by 320 pixels. a d**n fine unit for $160. you can find them cheaper as well. if you give blood a few times you will be set up in no time ;D
