  1. There is not one set answer. Line size- Most rods will tell you what size mono or flouro will be best suited for the rod. Your reel will also have lines sizes and how many yards of each it will hold. You then use this to decide what works best for you, where you are fishing and what you're fishing with. As far as what to use the rod for, try throwing different baits to determine if you like the rod for the bait you're using. I gage it by what feels the best to me with the bait that I'm using.
  2. Glad to hear. My last outing on the Alley was brutal. Thinking I might take my son to Holiday Park on Sunday. Do you do well fishing jigs on the Alley or Holiday. I've been trying to get better fishing jigs and try them almost every trip. But usually end up switching to plastics.
  3. I usually use 10lb mono.
  4. You guys are killing me. I need to go fishing!
  5. Looks like you guys had a great trip.
  6. Like was mentioned above, they are in all the canals. I would either work a jerkbait or torpedo. The faster the better.
  7. Weightless Flukes do well there also.
  8. Sounds like a good trip. Gar and Mudfish are thick this year. My last two trips to the Alley we have boated at least one.
  9. When I bought mine, I think I drove everyone in my house crazy. I was reading up as much as I could on Humminbird, Lowrance and Garmin. I figured that if I was going to go in and drop money on a unit I want the most features I can get (and afford.) GPS is a big feature that I wanted to marks spots and get around lakes that I don't fish often. I ended up with a Humminbird 899, however it was not my first choice. I wanted one of the new Garmin units but I got a good deal on the 899 and don't regret it at all. Right now all the unit are really nice and have outstanding features. My recommendation would be to go out with buddies that have units like this on their boats or go to a store where you can play around with the different units and see which is the easiest for you to use. And these units will show you some incredible things on the bottom of your lake.
  10. Got my butt kicked last Sunday on the Alley. Think I'm going to hit up Holiday on Wednesday for some redemption.
  11. 7" Gambler Ribbon Tail (Junebug)
  12. I never did well along that stretch of 27. I would say to run up the alley and work the lily pads.
  13. Not a bad way to spend the afternoon.
  14. I'm going to try and get out to Holiday on Wednesday and hopefully they are still biting. When I went on Sunday I threw everything but the kitchen sink. Frogs, Jigs, 7" worms, 10" worms, Flukes, Spinnerbaits etc... I haven't seen this many Muds and Gar in years. I can remember years ago there being a lot of Gar on the Alley and as long as you had enough weight to get under them the bass would bite. On Sunday it seemed I got under the Gar and right into the mouths of Mudfish. haha
  15. I've been hearing good reports from Holiday and the Alley. Was out on the Alley on Sunday. Very rough day of fishing. Lots of gar and mudfish.
  16. Gambler makes a great product. Frogs, Ugly Otters, Ribbon Tail works great in SFL canals.
  17. If the water continues to drop before the rain comes in, should start seeing some big ones swimming the canals.
