  1. Remember Aaron Martens is way way way out there for most of the pros!!! LOL To say he is ANAl is an understatement which he even says sometimes.
  2. The one you threw here was like all of my spinning reel setups. Half a spool of Stren original mono in 14 pound test. That is my standard backing and the rest of the spool is full of Berkley Original Fused FireLine in 14 pound test ( 6 pound diameter) and a 5 foot P Line CXX Moss green 8 pound leader
  3. Broomstick gave you some good advice. Here is my take on the lefty and righty thing. I am right hand so many lures I cast two handed for distance. That is one reason I like the longer handles ( including split grips). My right hand is definitely my dominate hand so if I am pitching, flipping, fishing a jig or texas rigged worm or creature bait, and even a carolina rig, than I prefer to keep my rod in my right hand. That means I use a left handed reel on the rods when I fish these baits. It works best for me. Now I am totally comfortable with using a right handed reel for most of the treble hook baits I fish. This includes crankbaits, square bills, and many single hook baits like spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and even buzzbaits. Jerkbaits and topwater baits I prefer a lefty because once again most of the action is imparted by the angler. I also enjoy changing hands to relieve any cramping I get. I have been using my hands for over 35 years as a mechanic. I have beaten them up enough over time. In your case you are not setting up a huge arsenal like I have so if you choose the Quantum rod it will work fine for you as an all around rod. Remember if you coupon is not available there is a quick way to save $10. Go to the store and purchase your line or anything cheap. I like the house brand of jigs called Jawbone. I get 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4 ounce jigs for around $3.00. Come home and go online. Fill out the customer survey and then print a $10 off coupon. You can do this any time you want, there is no limit of how many times you may do this. Each time requires a new receipt.
  4. I really recommend the Tatulas! NO it is not similar to any other baitcaster!. Setting up a Tatula is totally different than setting up any other reel. If you ever set up a Lews or Shimano as loose as a Daiwa gets setup then the backlash would be astronomical. It would become a Bill dance 'You might want to trade that one in". Take a look at these two videos. The first one will show you what Mag Force and Mag Force Z is all about. Most reels have either manually adjusted magnetics brakes ( like your Lews) or manually adjusted centrifugal brakes like the ones they have in a Shimano Curado. Some have a combination of the two like the Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier. The Daiwa reels that have Mag Force, Mag Force Z and includes the Daiwa SV reels. All of these reels have a set of weights that are opposed by springs, they automatically alter the amount of braking force- just like a lawn mowers governor would control its speed. There is also the manual setting the angler can adjust as well. The second video explains how to properly set up a Tatula SV TWS reel up. All the Tatulas should be set this way.
  5. I would also suggest the Tatula CT. I run 7 Tatulas of different flavent flavors. However if you want to stay in a Lews how about a Lews Mach 1 Speed spool. your reel should be a 7 bearing reel ( six shielded and 1 roller bearing). The Mach 1 contains 9 bearings plus one roller bearing. It should adjust very close to what you have. A Carbon Fire goes for around $80and the Mach 1 goes for $119. That is retail not what they can be found on the internet for.
  6. Okay let me give you a few nice rods to look at. One of my favorite rods I fish with ( and I fish with 12 baitcasters ) is a Powell Max 683CEF You are welcome to go on Tackletour and read about that rod http://www.tackletour.com/reviewpowell683cxfast.html Now that rod has been upgrade in the Powell Max 3 D and duplicated in the Powell Inferno line. The Inferno is very similar to the rod I own. Those rods run $90. My powell rod is the most versatile rod in my arsenal. Next take a look at a rod like the Dobyns Fury FR 734C. It is rated as a heavy but fishes more like a MH/H. That is a super versatile rod as well. It will run you around $110, but fishes more like a $200 rod. Lastly I am going to surprise you a little. One of the rods I fish with is a Quantum only available from Dicks Sporting Goods. It is called a Quantum Escalade. It is available in a 6'6 and as 7 footer. I fish a 7' and it rates for 1/4 to 1 1/2 oz baits. This is a IM8 rod that regularly sold for $99.00 but has been on sale for quite some time. They sell for $50 on sale. It has pretty good sensitivity, decent guides and reel seat handles big fish well ( I often use it to catch stripers as well as bass) and it is affordable. It is not a super pretty rod but it works well. I use mine to throw spinnerbaits, worms, jigs, and you could even handle a carolina rig with it. Personally if your budget was $150 I would go with a Powell Max 3D 683CEF. Next I would choose between the Powell Inferno 683CEF , he Inferno 703 MH CEFor the Dobyns Fury. If money is tight the Quantum s a fine rod for the money.
  7. Lets start with some questions and simple answers. What is your budget for a rod? You have already made a great choice in reels. The Tatula CT is just one of the reels in the Tatula family. The brakes used on the entire Tatula family are designed VERY different than ever other brand of reels! If you adjust a Tat CT properly you will learn to cast it very well very quickly. Start buy reading the brochure it comes with for a few minutes. Learn how the star drag is tightened and how it affects the tension a fish must put on the line to make the drag give line. Nest you will see the spool tension knob. Tighten it down till the spool has no side to side play within the frame of the reel. Loosen it up a touch till there is a little side to side play, like a 1/16 of inch side play. You will feel it when you can move it back and forth with your thumb. Now look at the brake adjustment dial. It goes from 0 to 20. Set it to 10. Look at the rod you choose, it will say what lure weight it is designed to throw. Most MH rods will say 1/4 to 3/4 of an ounce. Learn by throwing a bait like a jog that weighs close to the middle of the rods spec. In the case of a 14/4 to 3/4 rating I would learn while throwing a 1/2 ounce jig. I personally would try a copolymer line like a P Line FloroClear or perhaps I would spool some Suffix 832 in 30 pound test. That line plays nice on that reel. I have it on a few of my combos here. Power Pro Spectra in the same pound test would be fine. Many of the anglers that have casting issues try to heave to hard in their casting. This is not needed with a CT. Try to use a nice smooth casting motion and your results will surprize you. It has to do with the movement of the inductor and the weights that move it automatically.
  8. You might find it helpful to do a little detective work. Use the search box as this topic gets covered a thousand times in this forum. Your budget is a bit low to get a lot of options. Perhaps a Berkley Lightning Shock rod and an Abu Garcia Black Max reel. If you save a bit more money your options increase a lot. Then something like a Lews Mach one combo is an option.. It runs $140 at Dicks Sporting Goods. There is a trick with Dicks you should know. If you stop in the store and buy something cheap you can use that receipt to go online and fill out customer survey and your reward is a $10 off coupon. I usually purchase a Jawbone jig. That is a Dicks house brand jig, they fish well and only cost $3.00. For you I would suggest you buying the line you will spool on your new combo.
  9. The Dobyns rods are like potato chips! You can't just have one! Nice combo by the way.
  10. That is to run a hook under. Yours might have gotten squashed flat I can not tell from your picture angle. These are great because you can slide the hook under without removing a trailer off a bait like a jig. Go here and mouse over the first picture of the rod. You can see how that hook keeper should be just above the rod blank. http://www.abugarcia.com/abugarcia-rods-casting-rods/abu-garcia-vengeance-casting-rod/1373576.html I hope that helps.
  11. I am afraid the properties you are looking for were good for banjos and terrible for fishing. Fishing line manufacturers have pretty much abandoned any characteristic that would be bad for fishing. Today's lines are all going to be questionable for your use. If any would be workable try some P Line CXX in like 12 to 17 pound test. CXX is a line with a heavier diameter and more memory than many lines like Stren. It has a great amount of abrasion resistance and breaks way above its rated strength so it might be what you are looking for. CXX in 17 pound test is .0165. Tackle Warehouse has it in the Moss Green ( a 300 yard spool) or the clear blue fluorescent in a much bigger spool. Check with P Line and maybe it is available in a smaller spool size.
  12. SIze depends on manufacturer and preference. I run mostly Pfluegers for my spinning reels. They have been extremely reliable for me over the last 10 years. I did purchased my wife a Shimano Symetre spinning reel about 1 1/2 years ago. It works fine, but I am concerned because Shimano discontinued it. That reel had developed a bad reputation. Apparently the reel's internal parts developed an issue where they no longer rotated without sticking. The reports I have seen suggested the factory replaced parts but never fixed the issue! It was then discontinued and nothing really was done for its owners. I am hoping ours does not develop that issue or I am going to have to throw a very expensive reel away. Up till then our Pfluegers were Presidents. For her latest setup we went with a Pflueger Supreme in a 35 size. I like a Pflueger size 30 reels for light finesse bass setups and a 35 sized reel for most of our medium and medium heavy bass setups. Most anglers that I have met on these boards tend to use the 30 size reel for bass. A Shimano Nasci 2500 is close to my 6930 President in line capacity. I have even seen some members say they fish with the 1000 sized Shimanos for bass. I suspect it is on their finesse bait rods. I also run nothing but 14 pound Berkley FireLine braid and a 5 foot leader on my spinning setups. That means I fill the reel up half way with Stren 12 or 14 pound mono to cut cost The braid is equal to 6 pound mono so the reel would take a boat load of braid to fill properly otherwise. I have only played with one new Daiwa and it was a BG 2500. That reel is also very close in physical size and line capacity to my 6935 reels that I like the best. The BG is a great reel. It is not a super light reel though. I really liked it, but I do tend to prefer a metal housing to all the graphite/ whatever composite bodied reels they are building today. You asked about the Fuego LT reels. They are brand new and in most cases not in stock yet. Tackle Warehouse is not expecting any till December. They were just released at ICAST. This will be one of those lighter composite bodied reels. If it were available I would still prefer a BG. I recommend you try and play with a few reels in person. Go play with a Daiwa BG 2500, a Pflueger Supreme 35, a Shimano Nasci, these all retail for about the same amount of money.
  13. I am a big Dobyns, Powell, Irod fan. My first choice would be an Irod IRG754 Fred's Magic Stick. The Powell Max 3D 736 is a nice rod for sure. As for the Dobyns I own several of Gary's rods and they include Sierras and a Champion XP. The Sierra rods are a bit slower than the Champion XPs. I realize the Champion XP model DC 735C would be my best suggestion for your use. It is available in both split and full cork handle depending on your preference. I think that frogs and flipping/pitching are techniques that would benefit the most by a rod with faster graphite. That rod does cost a bit more than your budget. It runs $260. The Sierra will work well, I just know how good the Champ meets that need. I say that, but my wife's frog rod is a Sierra SA 705SF. My personal frog rod is a Champion XP DC705C. ( I can not fit a rod longer than 7' in my rod box) and it is matched up with a Daiwa Tatula Type R 8-1, it makes a nice combo. That is just my 2 cents.
  14. If you live in California you have lots of manufacturers local you can order directly from. Another option is to order one from Tackle Warehouse. Both options work well. There are plenty of Cali dealers for Powell, Dobyns and Irod. For a nice all around spinning setup look at a Powell Inferno 6103 MEF. It is a 6'10 Medium extra fast. It runs $100 An Irod Genesis II IRG 713S is a nice all around rod also. It runs around $149. A Daiwa Tatula XT in medium action might be a good choice. I have hard good things about them, I have fished Powell rods and Irods so I know more about some of them. The Dobyns Fury rods are nice also. The Fury FR 703SF would be the the best option there. For a dependable modest priced reel I would consider a Pflueger President but a step up is the Pflueger Supreme. My wife and I fish some of each. We use 14 pound Berkley FireLine on our spinning reels. I use a 5 foot leader made of 8 pound P Line CXX. I also spool the reel half way up with Stren 12 or 14 pound test mono as backing.
  15. Hello and Welcome. Name here is Bob and I live close to you. I live in Middle River, down near Martins Airport. Send me an e mail at fishnkamp at comcast.net. We can hook up by phone and go over some ideas where to go.
  16. begginingfisherman the Colt series is brand new. They have not even been shipped to the dealers yet. So no one except a few prostaff may have ever fished with them yet.
  17. 1 time might be okay or 1 time too many! Who knows?
  18. Please treat those idiots like revenuers back in the old days. They go into the woods and don't come out. No one ever new why! LOL
  19. slonezp is right use it all day and recharge it right away for maximum life. I have run the same 3 Cabelas group 30 AGM batteries for over 7 years and they are fantastic. I also plug in my on board charger when I return. Make sure to purchase a charger designed for charging AGM batteries. They are not expensive but you need one. They charge differently and the charger knows how to do it correctly.
  20. There is no reason to purchase an Exceler for more than a Fuego CT or a Tatula CT can be purchased for. I own and fish the Tatula Type r and Tatula CT reels as well as an Exceler. The Exceler does not have the Mag Force Z brakes and yes there is a difference in how effective the brakes are between Mag Force and Mag Force Z.
  21. Check out Bobby Gentry's Guide service on Facebook. Our last trip with him was in April of 2016. During that trip my wife and I were catching 5 to 7 pound smallies and largies with him. We have hired a lot of guide in our 40 years of fishing together. He is by far the hardest working guide I have ever met. If you contact him tell him Bob and Linda from MD sent you. He will hook you up!
  22. I am glad you liked it. I am in love with all of my Daiwas. Make sure you are running the reel with a little side play in the spool as the video shows. It will give you the most distance. Educate your thumb a little and you will be amazed how that setup will fly.
  23. Make it easy just ship it to DVT for his TLC treatment. No fuss no muss! No broken reel!
  24. Hi James Welcome to our group of fishing addicts. I love the area of the world you live in. My wife and I live near Baltimore MD. but have made many trips into central TN. We intend to retire somewhere near Dayton, Crossville, Cookeville just not sure yet. As for boats and Jeeps you know a jeep is a fine tow vehicle for a 17 or 18 foot aluminum bass boat. It could be a simple jon boat or a fancier rig like a Tracker, Lowe, G3, or Alumacraft. There are many good aluminum rigs that would be lightweight and easy to handle behind a short wheelbase Jeep. That would indeed get you off the bank. ANother option would be a used kayak or canoe. Just a few things to think about. I have owned 11 jon boats, canoes, aluminum bass boats, and 2 fiberglass rockets. I have caught as many fish out of my aluminum bass boats as either of the two fiberglass rocket ships. Just an idea to think about. As for lures and things to try send me a pm and we can talk about it. If you want to do something really cool I know an awesome guide on Dale Hollow. I use him every time I go stay on the lake. Most of my personal best bass have come from that lake. Bobby Gentry is one of the best teaching guides I have ever used also.

Welcome Bobby. There are lots of us fishing addicts around here so feel free and join in. I love the area you live in. My wife and I fish all over but live near Baltimore. We have made so many trips into central TN my truck can find it without me. I have boated on Percy Priest years ago while test running a brand new ProCraft bass boat with a factory rep. Since then we have fallen in love with Dale Hollow and Center Hill. I still have Chicamagua, Cherokee, Watts Bar and Kentucky lakes on my to do list. We have been looking around at property to retire on, it will probably be somewhere around Crossville, Cookeville, maybe down around Dayton I am not sure yet. But boy do you live in an amazing mess of lakes.
