Skunked going for shad - James River VA
Thanks all, location could have played a part, all the boats around I-95 and west were anchored in middle or towards south shoreline. To get out of traffic I was on North shoreline where only a couple others came through then left. Later I moved to middle but lost my remaining darts then broke my slip knot loop trying to get dart unhooked, this was my last straw so I called it a day. I'm gonna hit the southern bank side early this week from shore then try rto get yak out over weekend, we'll see how it goes. One funny episode though, halfway between I-95 and Ancarrow slip is two small rock formations sticking out of water in middle of James. I thought this would be great place to cast from since I had 360 degree access. After a few casts I notice two geese coming flying in, one immediately does a straight line towards me, hissing and ticked he starts attacking me, I had to hold him off with my pole (no - did not hit him), as I am fast backtracking to get to my yak while this goose is charging me, these two guys on boat just off rocks are cracking up....I admit it had to be funny as hell to see....LOL

Fishing Rivers (Specifically the James)
Hit James this weekend first time (Ancarrow and I-95 bridge), current was stronger than used to since I stay in ponds/lakes. I have a power pole type anchor but next time will bring anchor as bottom in areas is rock and pole was drifting in areas.... river much shallower than I expected but could of been low tide,. Getting yak back up ramp at low tide was nightmare due to silt up to knees and needing to pull it. I got skunked as my first time there so I need help also.....

Skunked going for shad - James River VA
Went out Saturday a.m. with yak flyfishing for shad on James from Anaccarow landing to I-95 bridge, was using 5wt fly rod, 130 grn sink tip, and shad darts. Beautiful day, tons of boats and shore anglers, lots and lots of folks catching them but me:( So I ask: 1. Regarding fly set up, am I doing something wrong? 2. I want to bring spinner reel next time also, Daiwa STZ68IMLFSA Steez SVF Compile-X 6’8” Spin Rod, but what kind of lures do I get, please be specific? As you can tell I am new to this but it was frustrating too see so many anglers catch so many fish and I only manged to lose all my shad darts getting stuck on bottom.....ugh....

Wind canceled kayak trip
I seriously considered the Sportspal before buying yak, it makes a lot of sense and works great for fishing. Yak checked off few more boxes for me.

Wind canceled kayak trip
We had one local death due to winds, 6 yo was killed when tree feel on house. Driving around you could see signs blown apart....crazy winds we had.

Do rod floats work well enough?
I lost rod/reel fisrt time out with my yak, I threw it into lake while casting with sweating hands, after that I lashed everything to kayak when not using it, I did that for awhile now I do not. I don't fish running water so I don't think necessary. Floats look cumbersome to me but let us know how it works for you.

Recommend intermediate-level books?
2nd vote for Roland Maetins 101 Bass Secrets, its all about how, where and with what to catch bass. Find used in ebay. Also, try In Pursuit of Giant Bass, author based out of CA but great info on differences between bass and HUGE bass. Intersting read but limited in my shallow lakes. Also Knowing Bass was really good, wish I didn't sell mine after reading it.

Before you make your first cast ...
Much more than I ever thought, this winter I really started reading and studying bass fishing (only got yak last summer), I started to make a list of variables I wanted to incorporate into my pre-fishing and on on-water routine. The following is not comprehensive as I have not updated with notes I have scattered around but here goes..... Weather 2-3 days before Countdown casts Wind direction Shade (fish shady side) Sunny or overcast/clouds Raining Prefrontal or post frontal Cold or warm front Water temp Water - calm/rough Water depth Structure Weedlines are structure Inside and outside weed edges Best structure is isolated structure Look for irregularities Ambush points Casting - line up boat correctly Count down every sinking lure/bait to get to right depth to fish Heavy line sinks slower than light line If get hit worm, throw crank to see if still there Time of day Picture 8lb bass where you want him Find access points to deep water Throw 6’ past target or ambush point, not on it Migration paths Again there is a lot more I am adding......Also, I have lists for Techniques w/ specifics, Winter, Prespawn, Spawn, Summer, list for different baits...i.e., Jerk, crank, worm, jig etc. There is so much minutia in fishing that depending what I plan on doing I can go to that specific list and it helps me remember the little thinks and little tricks I may not always remember.

spinnerbait rod
I'd go MH, F with min 7', I like 7'3 for reasons you stated. The lighter the rod the more expensive, generally speaking, lots of choices in everyones budget.

First Fly Fishing Setup
All three choices have great reviews on Amazon, I think any would be fine, just pick which one your drawn to.

The new guy
Welcome, a lot of VA guys and kayakers here. There is a kayak group called Central Virginia Kayak Bass Anglers on meetup.com that gets together often, host fishes every Monday aftenoon to dusk. Diverse group of folks all age groups.

Odd hook-up. Teachable moment?
"Odd one-off"...."luck".... dude, are you kidding me? You fished 5 hours in what sounds like pretty tough conditions, throwing different bait with different retrieves, you finally get it dialed in and get a bite very quickly. That's not luck my friend, with fish shut down and you persevering as long as you did trying different things and finally getting a bite I would chalk up to experience and grit. I would have bailed after 2nd hour for sure. Don't sell yourself short, you earned that fish in big way:)

spinnerbait rod
I have a 7'6" cut down to 7"3" M Fast Action I use for spinnerbaits/chatter/buzz up to 1/2 oz, its great in open water around laydowns and standing timber, ticking tops of vegetation and sparse vegetation. As papajoe said on length versus accuracy it is a tradeoff, but by cutting a 7'6" down gives me best of both worlds. I have same rod in MH on order for same baits but to use in heavier vegetation cover, and for heavier lures. I pair with 7.2:1 reel and 65# Bushido braid. If your looking for a single rod to cover most situations and be very versatile I'd probably step up to MH unless you don't have a lot of vegetation, but I would try to stay at minimum 7' just to get distance, with spinner you want to cover water and extra distance will help.

Why do the older legendary pros struggle to compete ? ?
Aside from some great philosophers, most did their most important stuff when much younger. I read where as philosophers age their brains aren't able to think as deeply as when younger.
