I have never really had any problems with fluorocarbon.

BPS doesn't make "Excel Fluorocarbon." Not that I know of atleast. I think you may be using mono.

Actually, I just tape the line to the spool with some elictrical tape. It may not be the best way to do it (you might get a big fish on), but it works.

I really don't think you can go wrong with either of them. I will say that I have used the core, and it is one heck of a reel.
