  1. At 7 bucks per 100, potentially 100 12 lb bass, versus the cost on only ONE fancy new diving crankbait that may end up lost or hungup deep. Hmmm, I like those odds. BTW, Ive used shiners and goldfish all my life, even now have a few dozen yoyo's out im fixing to go run and never, i mean never ever never, have i gotten a bass over about four lbs on a yoyo and maybe five using a rod w/ live bait. Lots of small fish but not many big ones. Fine by me anyway, bass over about six lbs taste funny so they get released anyhow so you folks can hang em on yer wall. ;D
  2. I may go into the shiner business. Here they cost 4 bucks for fifty, 7 bucks for 100. Goldfish run 7 bucks a pound. Hook em thru the front part of the eye sockets, will stay alive a long time compared to other methods and if in current that or lip hooking is a must. Tailhooking or back hooking makes em struggle a lot for a little while, then they tire out and hang still. Front end hooking they calmly swim around in circles if on a yoyo and swim where they can go if on a float. For bass ill use a good sized float and the shiner or goldfish 12 inches or so deep. Gently pitch the rig up next to cover and let the bait swim into areas you could never cast directly such as under docks, under parked boats, inside hollow logs, etc.. be prepared for anything. gar, bowfin, jackfish, catfish, crappie, bass, etc... anything may nail a fat juicy shiner or goldfish.
  3. Throw a torpedo way out, sit and have a soda pop, watch the clouds, take a break, let the fish come back, then sssssssslowly start twitching the torpedo back to you.
  4. Thanks, I stopped by and talked to the guy that created the maps of that lake and got a virtual tour. There are a few islands in cheniere but none that are not permanent. He did say there are a few ridges that it gets shallow but that would take a severe drought plus a drawdown to ever reveal land. What he thinks I may be hearing of are thickets of tupelo gum trees. They get so thick you cant take a boat into them and may be what others are mistakenly calling islands. These are the places he says to fish. Lots of bass and crappie but no big cats. Buying shiners and bait from him for fifteen yrs ya'd think i knew his name, LOL. He's on tv occasionally crappie fishing on the national shows, a crappie guru of sorts and cheniere is his home lake and dont forget he is the one that drew the official map . I kinda respect his opinion LOL.
  5. you forgot a few more classes of inconsiderate boaters. The cigarette boats ten times too big for our river leaving three foot wakes passing by you too fast getting a chuckle at you bobbing up and down in yer lil boat or IMO the worst of the worst. Drunks partying on other peoples houseboats using the bayous as garbage cans. Bottles, cans, paper trash, fast food wrapers, you name it. One yesterday threw a longneck bottle in the water right in front of me and was a trashbag tied to the railing on the houseboat two feet from where the jerk was standing. Those of us that own waterfront property just love cleaning up the messes of these people. and another thing,,,, please, im asking please, dont just cut trotlines when yer crankbaits find them. that line cost a whole lot more than the crankbait. found one cut clean with a knife just this morning and i had it 15 feet down. whew..... ok, enough.
  6. Had this happen yet again this weekend: Running my yoyo's right off our land in a riverlake- amazed at the idiots that plop spinnerbaits down within inches of my goldfish. Saw one guy get his caught up in my yoyo too. All this within 100 yards of me sitting in my johnboat running my hooks. IF A BIG FAT WIGGLING GOLDFISH AINT GOTTA BITE YER SPINNERBAIT AINT GOING TO EITHER Saw one fully tricked out bass boat take a big blue cat off a yoyo but no way i could catch them. Cussed em out from cross the lake but that was it. Just as blatant i guess is the guy that came upon me while i was throwing a torpedo tied off to a yoyo tree, float fishing with shiners ten feet from me. Ive got five yoyo's tied to limbs of this cypress tree a foot off the water, a thin rope tied to a branch to keep me stationary, a bass rod in my hand, and yet still this bozo comes right up to me and starts fishing. I guess all that still wasnt enough to give these idiots a clue so i surely dont see help with just another bass boat crowding you a little. sad but true..... Guess ill have to keep a few black watersnakes in a sack while i fish. Harmless totally but to unsuspecting bozo might just freak em out enough when i toss one in his boat.... hmmmm happy fishing
  7. G'mornin all. Am looking for a (hopefully online) source of lake maps that show water depth. A local lake- several thousand acres of flooded timber is insanely difficult to navigate. Even old timers can get turned around esp at night. Well, there is a mythical island in the middle of this lake no bigger than a house lot that only shows itself in far below average rainfall level summers. Here can be found the unicorns- ok, only kidding there, the old timers swear they can fill ice chests full of black crappie around this island but unless you get pops to show you his honeyhole one will NEVER find it on their own, satellite image maps useless as ive tried. Cheniere lake in northeast LA is where im talkin about. Any of you heard of this? Or know how I could obtain better data in locating this sometimes-an-island? I've had to many unrelated reports of its existence to doubt its there somewhere, just the location of it is whats shrouded in secrecy. Thanks folks... chad
  8. I seem to have a drawer full of torpedoes but only in a few color patterns. When i find one that works I just get more of the same. Esp the torpedoes as thats my "go to" bait. Cant remember the name of the pattern, neon green, brown, hunters orange? Ive caught more fish off of that pattern than anything else. anyone remember the name? I dont fish many buzz baits as a good buzz bait situation is also a good torpedo one. Some will disagree im sure. Whatever catches fish. If a silver hot spot with a blue stripe catches fish why run out and buy a blue one with a red stripe? If it aint broke dont fix it. I do however take exception to that if all my buds are catching fish on bait X and im not doin so well then yes, i will give bait X a try.
  9. Welcome to the group! Mouse over the drop menus at the top of the page to find a vast assortment of wholesome goodness. Anything and everything bass fishing. What more could one want? No chat room that I'm aware of, then again ive never looked. I prefer the message forum format for discussions. again..... welcome
  10. No problem, i certainly didnt mean anything beyond i was curious as to what kind of cat it was. Unless i missed it in the post no one ever said what it was. If the coloration pattern is all screwey then the ray count in the anal fin and its shape are the defining characteristic. Also if the outer edge of the anal fin is sharp, as in its all straight and perfect as if cut with scissors, then its a blue, if the anal fin is a bit rounded then its a channel. Color is meaningless in identification of exact species when melanistic conditions are present.
  11. From the pix it looks like an eater sized blue but without a clear pic of the anal fin and tail i cant say for sure.

  13. Ahhh groceries. Of course I eat em. I do let a lot of bass go, keeping a few in the 3 to 5 lb range for supper sending the rest back to the water. My family eats fish at least once, often twice a week. Catfish, Crappie, Catfish, and some bass too. My fav would have to be bass hands down but i dont keep that many of them. I used to be a catfish nut, still am but when u have all the aforementioned fish on one plate and can compare bite to bite, i changed what my fav eater was. Well, maybe the Oppelousas catfish is still number one (flathead) but i dont catch em with the regularity as the others. Opps do not eat poop as do other cats. Flatheads are one of the top predator fish in freshwater and only eat live bait. Yes u can catch em on a spoon or such occasionally- to the fish thats still "live" bait. Channel gets it name cause it sits in the channel eating the detritus that floats downstream. Yhea they will eat other stuff but as a rule.... Blues are just blue channels in regards to feeding habits. Bullheads (mudcats) eat anything and everything. Because Opps are predators, their meat is nothing like channels or blues, no where near as greasy, and more basslike in its texture. A prize for the table indeed. Another plus for Opps is that a 20 pound Opp eats just as tasty as a two pound one. That cant be said for most fish.
  14. I'd go with the single hook doing more damage. I ve only had to cut treble hooks deep in a bass' throat only a few times.
  15. thanks squid, i used to use one of those bud can baits and caught a lot of fish on it till a gar decided it wanted it more than i did. my "go to" baits are torpedoes anyway so the bud can isnt far removed. i saw an ad this morning for a bottle cap bait, i have a hunch u think thats what im talkin about. nope. the bud can bait im refereing to is a miniature beer can, plastic, about the size/ dimensions of a torpedo but shaped just like a beer can. perfect replica of a budweiser. ya fish the thing like a cross tween a t'pedo and a hula popper. neat conversation piece, even neater when it actually catches fish.
