Can anyone help me with spooling this Daiwa reel?
So I took it for a test drive yesterday (Tatula 200,) casts nicely and the 20 lb big game is smooth enough but when I foolishly made a cast into the wind it jumped right off of the reel. Is this just a no-no for any line type on a baitcaster, and casting into the wind will always backlash you or did I not spool it tight enough or have my drag/spool tension set wrong? It was somewhere in the neighborhood of 80% of the line capacity that got loose and I had to pull out, it was down to the nub before I found it tight to the arbor.

What do you generally find to be the best way to add weight to a glide bait to keep it from coming out of the water?
See I was always told you didn’t want to interfere with the hook.

Yeah fair point. I suppose I’m just trying to dial in as much as I can before honing the technique; ie weight, setup etc.

Yeah that’s why I switched to a lower gear ratio, hoping that’s all I needed along with a little control.

What size trebles do you find to be ideal on say a 6.5” 2 oz Chad Shad?

I’m trying to keep it from rising too fast You find storm weights preferable to upsizing hooks?

How much weight do I want total?

Fishing slow sinking 1-2.5 oz glides and jointed swimbaits I’ve noticed they tend to blow out even if you aren’t necessarily working them too fast. Do you prefer lead/tungsten weights or upsizing hooks? How much total extra weight is generally needed?

Ahh ok so I did it right the first time ??♂️

Yes indeed, I was thinking about this. This is one of the very few remaining traditional message boards that has survived social media’s annihilation of them. I tried that it does not stay in it

So I can’t unwind it back onto the spool and then just start over? When I unwind it it goes back on the spool unevenly, is this going to cause it to go on my reel unevenly? Also, I know I start a lot of threads but I’m not sure I’ve ever done that specifically lol, I have taken most of your advice.

Yes I want to keep the line. So I can’t unwind it back onto the spool and then just start over? When I unwind it it goes back on the spool unevenly, is this going to cause it to go on my reel unevenly?

So how do I get the line off the reel and evenly back on the spool?

Is this silver thing really where the line is supposed to be fed through? I seriously hope I’m missing something, the line keeps jumping off of it when I’m attempting to unspool the line from the reel, really frustrating. I have this Piscifun spooler and I’m trying to use the unwind function to re-spool 20 lb Big Game on this Tatula 200 because I didn’t like the way it went on the first time, it didn’t look smooth or even. Now when attempting to unwind the silver guide is not moving back and forth and the line is going back on the spool unevenly on only one side.

Do you find spawn/bed fishing less enjoyable than summer pattern?
Heard that too. Caught a 20.25 in a nesting area 2 weeks ago, in a place that holds no fish in the summer nowhere near current. Strange I know, wonder if they come back time to time to eat fry?

So I’ve got it narrowed down to the Tatula 200 for my swimbait setup. What gear ratio do I want, 6 or 7?
Not really necessary

Extremely doubtful. Most probably use 6 based on what I’m reading here, with the odd 7 speed preference here and there.

See I’ve heard that but then I’ve heard it only applies to lakes, and that in rivers the females still linger in the spawning area but I don’t know.

I hear a lot of people talk about how much they love spring because it’s prime time for giant fish. The prespawn bite really doesn’t last long where I live, I suspect it is similar elsewhere. This leaves the majority of the big fish caught in the spring to be nesting, whether it’s on the bed or guarding fry. I consider this all part of the same category as the fish are not feeding, but rather attacking anything that comes close to their eggs/fry. This just isn’t as fun or rewarding to me. I am fully aware that fishing beds is not easy whatsoever, and in some ways more difficult. I just enjoy locating the fish where they are feeding, looking for riffles and cover and the excitement and buzz I get when I stumble onto a juicy hole. I realize there is a gray area, where they aren’t necessarily “feeding” but biting on a reaction strike but I think that is still much different than spawn fishing. What percentage of people’s personal bests do you think have come off of beds or guarding fry, and how many caught naturally by fooling the fish?

What do you mean switch to 8:1? That’s what I’ve been using and figured I should slow it down.

Would it benefit me in any way to do that, and how much would that be? At that point would there be any advantage over my 8.3:1 Curado K?

Awesome, thanks for the detailed response! If I am using 19 lb Sunline Armilo Defier (.014 mm) or 20 lb Big Game (.019 mm) would my IPT be compromised to the point that I should bump it up to an 8 speed?

Would this be why injured/dying baitfish presentations like spooks, glide baits and jerk baits are so effective?
