Thinking about pulling the trigger on a LOWRANCE Hook-7
It's even worse of a 5" display since it is not square. It is a narrow screen which is what you do not want with the side looking imaging technology. There was a 598 and a 798 5" square screen model before the 600 series and they are OK. Even the Helix 5 SI GPS or Helix 5 CHIRP SI GPS G2 is better than any of those since it has a 16:9 ratio display.

Thinking about pulling the trigger on a LOWRANCE Hook-7
It ain't rocket science, just read the specs. It has traditional 2D sonar and Down Scan. A HDI transducer has a sonar crystal for 2D sonar and a sonar crystal for Down Scan. No other sonar technology. Go to the Lowrance website and look where the correct information is. If you are interested in Garmin, it would be a SV model to have SideVu. A Striker DV or CV is DownVu/ClearVu

Helix si 9 either net to a 778c
That is correct. The two units will share 83/200 kHz 2D sonar only. PLUS GPS data. It takes at least a XX9 model to cross-share sonar technologies with the Helix.

Humminbird SmartStrike Question
Yes it is compatible with those models. Have you checked the lake list to see if your waters of interest are high definition?

Did you register the card and do an update adding the Sonar Charts for the bodies of water you want the extra data for? There are thousands of bodies of water that have not been surveyed by any company to have contour mapping. One may be your favorite. You can view the current maps on the Navionics website's Web App. Any map you see, can be on your card if you update it.

Fish Finder suggestions under $300
Good points. Adding to that is, no mapping company collects data for every square foot of terrain regardless of who does it. Data is collected in intervals and then fake lines (interpolated) are filled in between those intervals to create the contours. If you do your own with some contour mapping software, you won't do that either as you will see more data created than is actually measured. You may think you are creating an accurate map, but you are not. You will have just as much false data as the mapping companies produce. I think I have posted this on this site before, but this track is what I did to correct an interpolation error from previous sonar logs. ONLY the exact depth and location below the green line is actual accurate data. Every dark area within the green line that gets contour lines is fake (interpolated). This is a big area that I surveyed just to get some data to start. The ONLY accurate data is below those lines. The map created has contours everywhere in between. Basically I got (something) but not any accuracy for 95%> of the area covered. You can view the results of that and may think it looks great, BUT you and I know from the collected data track where the accuracy really is. Mapping companies do the same thing the same way as I did, maybe even less. BUT I can fill in those areas whenever I take the time to do so. I doubt if any mapping company will resurvey a particular body of water to improve the accuracy of their maps within 10 years of the last one. Just too many locations and not enough time.

Well I was half serious. It was used on TV to cover a screen door for the bottom of a boat. The new tape was used to put a boat back together that had been cut in half. I use it for various things around the house. "Only $19.95, but wait, you can get two for $19.95, just pay additional shipping and handling."- pond boat adhesive
- Anyone use a tilt trailer to launch where there were s no boat ramps?
I had a tilt trailer with a 12' jon boat fixed up like a bass boat. Used the tilt feature twice the same day--- first and last. I think the trailer brand was Shorelander.- looking for GPS/Finder suggestion
What does "works well with a iPilot" mean?- Marina install of transducer on new boat?
NO, all HUMMINBIRD DI units come with the same DI transom transducer. Lowrance does not have Down Imaging (DI), Lowrance has Down Scan (DS). The equivalent Lowrance unit would be a HDI model, different brand and different transducer. The "flip" mount is a safety trip in case of impact and is fragile plastic if the mount screws are over tightened. Yes a mount plate is a good idea if you have to move it or change transducers- Marina install of transducer on new boat?
All the DI units come with the same transom DI transducer and there is no upgrade for it. Their skill with attaching the transducer to the hull so it can perform will be the only concern.- Helix 7 SIGPS Fish ID
The tree with three symbols I posted above is one I check each time on that lake. If I don't see any symbols, I don't stop to fish it. This is the same one a few days earlier with no symbols for any larger fish just some smaller ones shown with Imaging as white dots. I did not stop to fish it that time: I sort of see a lot of valuable information using that feature.- Helix 7 SIGPS Fish ID
There are a lot of somethings in the water that did not get any symbols, those somethings are shad and small crappie. There are no weeds, twigs, or trees in this area. Try a Restore Defaults to get the unit back to the factory settings. Then turn on FishID again. Choose 83/200 kHz for Sonar so you get both sets of symbols. I have never needed to do any additional adjustments for that feature, Defaults is all I use. I currently have 6 Humminbird Side Imaging units, have three of them on my desk now hooked to a power source.- Helix 7 SIGPS Fish ID
Humminbird FishID symbols mean something---FISH. Most of the time they DO represent fish. The data is filtered to only assign the symbols if the returns meet the criteria for the symbols---air bladder size. You will get some symbols for air bubbles though, but no weeds, twigs, bushes, limbs etc. Small fish like shad, small crappie, etc will not get a symbol, has to be at least a 1# bass or larger using the Freshwater setting. There is another set for larger saltwater species. It is not a useless feature like with other brands. It is a fishing tool. The three larger bass in this tree were caught by me as well as some smaller ones that did not qualify for the symbols. There are no symbols for the tree itself. This school of crappie only had a few that were large enough to qualify for the symbols: When I was testing the Helix 7 CHIRP SI GPS G2, I took this screen shot. Just four in this school qualified for the symbols. Default settings with FishID turned on.- Pick one finesse technique only

I use the Sport model with 10A per bank. Been using it since 2009. Has my batteries fully charged this morning from heavy use yesterday. - pond boat adhesive
