  1. I use good quality electrical tape to put my reel on. I bought a Lews rod back in the 90s with a graphite handle like this and liked it a lot. I still fish that rod, and have another made by All Pro now. Smooth comfortable grip. Some guys use rod wrap, or self fusing tape, but electrical tape works well too
  2. My favorite is a Tennessee handle. Cork or graphite
  3. Yes. Almost forgot the shakey head. One more way they would work well
  4. Most of the time they are rigged on a jig head. Weedgaurds or standard bighead both work. A straight retrieve can be good, or let them sink, raise them up and let fall. For a weedless Texas rig, I like a grub with a slightly longer body, and match the hook size. They are also good on a split shot rig, with a slow steady retrieve, near the bottom
  5. When Mister Twister first introduced the curly tail grub, my older brother was quick to use this bait. He proved its effectiveness to me several times. We had been fishing and had caught a few bass early one morning, but hadn't had a strike in over an hour. Moving to a small point,he began casting a 3" grub and caught 4 keeper fish in 5 cast. Counting the grub down, and reeling with a slow retrieve, as long as the grub was coming just over the weeds, he caught a fish. One of my first lessons in speed and depth. I've carried grubs for many years, and they have always produced. They also do double duty as jig or spinnerbait trailers, and larger sizes can be Texas rigged and hopped or swam on or near bottom. Some that I've used are Mister Twister, Riverside grubs from Wal Mart, and the Charlie Brewer 3" paddle tail grub, rigged on a slider head. I'd like to try the Rage tail grub too.My older brother got to using a grub Every time we went fishing to the point that I started calling him a grubby kind of guy. If your a novice fisherman, and new to bass fishing, I would urge you to pack some plastic grubs along. Sometimes in all this new bass fishing stuff, a simple rig is still the best. Keep your rig simple, and focus on speed and depth control, the real key to catching bass consistently. I know many smallmouth fisherman use them, but they can work just as well on largemouth bass too. Simple? Yes. Effective? You bet. Glen has a great video on this site, and there's much info available on grub fishing. Are you still fishing grubs for bass? I've been a "grubby" kind of guy for years now.
  6. The only way to know what your favorite will be is to start fishing them.My #1 favorite is a plastic worm, Texas rigged. I use different worms, hook sizes, weights, etc. Too many variables to pick one. It's hands down caught more fish in 35yrs than all other baits I've used. I don't fish as many different teqniques as some do, but I don't feel I'm missing out. For much of the season, a T rig worm is that good.
  7. This is how fisherman are. Always looking for something better, when you probably already have the best.
  8. Well because of this thread, I'll be fishing lizards this season. And along with some other recent threads, bringing back the Beetle Spin, and the Culprit 7.5 in worm. Am I going backwards here? Nope. Going fishing with some killer bass baits! They all worked before, and I'm sure they'll work again.
  9. I wish it was that way here Catt. Im ready to go! Supposed to get hit with snow and ice this weekend. It's the hardest part of the year- for a fisherman anyway
  10. The All Star classic rods are probably the best 50 dollar rods on the market. Very good for the money
  11. I think like any soft plastic, more versatile than we think. Texas rig, split shot, or shakey head. I've never used one weightless, or fishing over the top of weeds, but many fish them with success this way. Whatever it is, lizards work.
  12. Good video. As others have said maybe not a true scenario. Wonder if they starved these bass, then dumped in the salamanders? Either way, looks like these fish are hungry, and would probably eat anything.
  13. I used to like fishing plastic lizards. A Zoom 6" plastic lizard in brn pumpkin/ chart tail was one of my favorite soft plastics. I havnt used any in a few seasons. Going through some older bags of plastics I tucked away, I found 2 bags. 1 brn, 1brn/ pumpkin chart tail. I used them a lot years ago, and always liked them. As with other baits, I stopped using them and moved on to other things. They offer a different profile and look than most creature baits, craws, and plastic worms. Sometimes, going through older baits, you wonder why you ever stopped using them? Are you still using plastic lizards? What sizes or brands do you like? I'm putting them back in my box this season. Another thing that I remember was that most guys thought of them as a spring time bait- especially around spawning bass.I caught most of my lizard fish after this- in hot weather. Are you still fishing with them, or have they been replaced? A great bass lure for sure
  14. I've had great luck with ABUs. The 5500c mentioned, and 2 4600c reels, one of which is 22yrs old. Good reels.
  15. Catt, I'll try to make em harder next time? Correct!
  16. What famous fishing lure, invented in 1965 was named after a U.S governor?
  17. Well, whoever ends up in the SB, let's hope it's a good game. Not a one sided blowout!
  18. Well J Francho, there's always next year
  19. Catt, the Saints came back and won it fair and square. I'm hoping to see Saints and Chiefs. That will be a good game
  20. Well, Ive decided to finally retire my ABU5500c. I actually bought this reel used, at a sporting goods store that took reels and reworked and rebuilt them. Purchased in 1989. Since that time I had the anti reverse pawl repaired once. Cleaned and lubed each year, it's done a great job. I couldn't guess the number of fish brought in with this reel. I've heard and read that the newer round ABU reels are not the same quality? Not sure about this. I've got my eye on a Shimano Calcutta. Round reels seem to work out best for me, and the Shimano seems to be the best one available. I'll be ready this coming season for sure.Any thoughts or recommendations from the round reel users?I know that folks who have these reels speak highly of them.
  21. I've never actually seen these rods, only read about them. Sounds like you got a great deal. Endorsed by Tommy Martin, their gonna be good.
  22. I made a thread about this also. I've quit throwing green pumpkin too. Because so many guys do well and love this color, I gave it a good shot. The only thing close that I use is watermelon/ red flake. Really don't even use it that much. I'll still use my grapes, blues, purple etc any day.
  23. Kansas City's defense held up yesterday! Can they keep it up? We'll see.Mahomes is red hot now, but it takes a good defense to win. It will only get tougher from here.
  24. Mike, your correct too. At least 3 were lure designers and endorsers Yes. Catt filled me in on Roger Moore in another thread. He fished 4yrs straight in early B.A.S.S. events and never once got skunked! Using mithcell 308/309 reels, which would have been considered a trout panfish reel at the time. Good fisherman- all of them. They fished the tackle that worked best for them, not giving a hoot what others thought. Fishing finesse, before finesse was cool.
