  1. Don't be afraid to go small. Light line and small baits will almost always deliver for me when the big stuff isn't working.
  2. Gotcha Tyler. I only use braid on my offshore bottom fishing rigs, so I really don't know much about it as it relates to bass fishing.
  3. 3 years of college before I ran out of money. Joined the Army as a forward observer for a special 2 year hitch that gave me enough money in the GI bill to finish college. Graduated from college went to work in Wal-Mart management for exactly one year before I decided I'd rather spend my life on boats than in a store. Joined the Coast Guard, became a Boatswain's Mate and retired after 18 years of service. Went back to work for the CG as a civilian SAR controller for 7 years and now as a commercial fishing vessel safety specialist. Been doing this for 6 years. I am going to retire again in 3 years. Paul Barnard (my user name is my last name spelled backwards)
  4. I have more Senkos (and other stick baits) than all other lures combined. The advice about going slow is the key. I tend to be impatient. It always seems that I catch my fish on Senkos when I am distracted and not actively working the bait. When I force myself to slow down, that's when I do my best. A lot of times I'll let one drag behind me as I drift fish in the kayak. I catch more that way than I do the one I am casting.
  5. Let me ask this question out of ignorance. If you are using 50# braid with no leader, why flouro as opposed to a standard mono? Isn't invisibility the chief advantage of flouro?
  6. And those are the old Wilderness Systems Tarpon molds. I have owned a 10 and a 12 and they are fantastic.
  7. I am sure you'll get a good story over time. I am not a big parade person, but I do go to one in Metairie each year. I am a Southern Miss Man. That purple and gold is hideous and most LSU fans can't even spell it. Gators?
  8. Man, we need an update!
  9. It probably took 5 minutes to get it in. The person in the van on the bridge stopped to enjoy the show.
  10. Tommy, how about our weekend weather of late? How many months has it been since it hasn't been blowing or raining on a weekend? And our forecast for this weekend...
  11. Good eye Darren. We both normally wear inflatables. I wear a belt style for kayaking and he has his own, but this time Papaw kinda screwed up. I told him I would bring everything for him but his tackle. As I was getting ready to launch, I realized that in my rush I had forgotten PFDs. We got our hands on some bulky type 2s to meet the legal requirement. Since there is no motorboat traffic, we were never more than 30 feet from shore and we are both very strong swimmers we opted to have them within reach rather than wear the type 2s. They are a PITA to fish in. When he was 8 I had him in the middle of a lake teaching him how to right a capsized yak and re-board.
  12. Justin, just out of curiosity have you ever tried P-line CX Premium? If so, how do the two lines compare?
  13. While it has nothing to do with bass fishing, it may have been worthwhile to note that I am retired active duty Coast Guard and still work for the Coast Guard as a Commercial Fishing Vessel Safety Specialist. I ran the rescue boats and did the law enforcement for most of my active duty career. If we ever delve into safety related topics, I may have an opinion.
  14. I took occasion to do a little kayak bass fishing with my grandson over his spring break. He has started tournament fishing in a youth division and is really into it. He probably knows more about bass fishing than I do, but I thought I might be able to teach him the value of small baits, light line and backwaters when limits are hard to find. I took him to Old Fort Bayou and Davis Bayou in Ocean Springs MS on an overnighter. Davis Bayou is perhaps my favorite brackish water destination. The part I fish is the upper reaches where most motor boats can't make it under a low bridge. I have caught upwards of 30 bass in a trip there. They normally range in size from under a half pound up to pound and a half. My bud lost a 4+ pounder there one time, and that's the biggest we have seen so far. I was using light to ultralight tackle and he was using medium stuff. He caught the biggest fish while I racked up an impressive total on 3" Senkos. Fishing with kids is the best! He hooked up with a 6 and a half pound redfish right off the bat and took a little ride. His best bass of the trip was a 2.5 pounder.
  15. Hi folks. Paul here. 55 years old and have bass fished most of my life. My first largemouth was caught on a Mann's strawberry worm. As with most of my pursuits, I am very casual about bass fishing. I have fished very few tournaments. Most of the time I fish for bass I fish brackish water. Down here we can catch speckled trout on one cast, bass on the next and redfish on the next. Brackish bass are generally not very large. I have a saltwater boat and a few kayaks. Most of my dedicated bass fishing is done from a kayak in brackish water. Since the bass are smallish, I use lightweight tackle and smaller baits. 90% of my bass fishing is done with plastic worms and frogs. I have to keep the assortment simple in the kayak. My largest bass was an estimated 7+ pounds. I caught it on a purple 4" Senko out of the kayak in a lake. I came here mainly to read and learn. I may be able to drop a little knowledge on kayaks, light tackle and small baits, but not much else. I will say that if any of you come to the NOLA area and want to kayak or marsh fish, drop me a PM and I'll hook you up.
  16. I have a Hobie Revolution 13. The hands free fishing that pedal kayaks allow just can't be beat. Mine is an older model with the old style seat and no reverse. My butt gets sore after a few hours, and that's my biggest complaint. Not having reverse is easy to manage. The kayak is stable enough for standing, but the floor shape makes it awkward. This boat is fast! I have had it over 7MPH according to my GPS. It's hard to maintain that speed, but it'll cruise 3.5 effortlessly all day. I have a bum right shoulder, so I can accomplish with the pedal yak what I could never do with a paddle yak.
  17. New guy with my first post here. I recently ordered this one from West Marine. I have yet to use it, but from assembling it and inspecting it, I can tell you that you can't go wrong for the money. It breaks down for easy storage. https://www.westmarine.com/buy/west-marine--scupper-swift-sit-on-top-kayak-dolly--16082653
