Accurate speedometer for trolling with down riggers.
Deeper sonar says 6mph. Phone app says 1mph, trolling motor set to 1 but when I put it up to 2 the speed on the phone app jumps to 4mph and the speed on the deeper sonar jumps to 10mph. Which is way off. Digital read out GPS speedometers seem like a solution but I'm hesitant because of reviews. Any good digital read out GPS speedometers that anyone knows of or has used that work? So far all three GPS apps I've tried all did the same exact thing. Two were free the third was 5 dollars and all of them read 1mph. Could be that I need better control of the trolling motor using a PWM speed controller.

Accurate speedometer for trolling with down riggers.
So I'm in a canoe with a 55lb thrust trolling motor. I set it to the lowest forward setting (1) and use a GPS speedometer app on my phone that quite frankly was a waste of time. I take a look at my deeper sonar readout and it says I'm doing 6mph. I want to be going 1.5 to 3 mph. That being said can anyone recommend a solution to this issue? Preferably a inexpensive one that will accurately give me the correct speed I'm going in calm to windy conditions and be easily installed because my hull is plastic

Bass fisherman goes rouge and looks into trout/land locked salmon fishing with down riggers
Thanks, I do not want to lose lures and spend all my time re rigging but from what I've gathered so far the majority of videos I've watched say to use floro because of its invisibility. I will be more than happy to use mono because it is far more user friendly than floro. that being said what kind of mono do you use?

Bass fisherman goes rouge and looks into trout/land locked salmon fishing with down riggers
@Fishingmickey I have an old Coleman Scanoe aka Square stern flat bottom canoe that has served me very well for bass fishing. I can stand up in it in calm to moderately wind blown waters so no worries there. Is the lure spinning about line twist? I can see that being an issue and will need to do some research on how to avoid it. I will be Reporting back but that will not happen till after the last weekend in April 2023 because NH fishing laws around designated trout ponds are nasty but not for bad reasons. There's also ice forming on our lakes now so it's hopefully going to be Pike fishing through the ice in a few more weeks. Thanks for confirming I knew I'd get good answers here. Tight lines!

Bass fisherman goes rouge and looks into trout/land locked salmon fishing with down riggers
After years of great bass fishing I am setting up my canoe that has a cheap, no foot pedal control, 55 lb thrust trolling motor and deeper pro+ fish finder. I have 2 mini manual Scotty mount down riggers, a box of wet flies, spinners, spoons, tiny crank baits. I need to know a few things before I fully commit to this. That being said can anyone here help me with the following questions. 1. Will my 55 lb trust trolling motor work to run two down riggers at 2 to 5 mph? 2. When fishing for rainbow trout what kind of rod reel line works best? I've gathered some info on trolling rods and reels in the 50 to 100 dollar price range but not enough info to determine if my planned set up of a 7.6 long medium power, fast action Diawa rod with a Okuma new magda line counting reel with 10lb test and 6 or 8 lb floro leaders with work. Do I need to adjust anything because you know it's all about catching vs getting skunked and spending money on tackle that proves to be useless. Thanks!

Please name this lure
Thanks to all who identified it. I'm off to buy some more and some jigs while I patiently wait for ice out.

Please name this lure
Does anyone know what this lure is called "brand name"? It was given to me and I love how the bass hit it hard. The hook is two pronged and it has no split ring. Thanks in advance

How to get young people fishing?
That's your experience which is sad because I happen to know woman that live to fish for the sake of fishing and honing their fishing skills.

How to get young people fishing?
I suppose it's how you put it in your OP. "Woman don't have patience for that" referring to the opposite sex in that way doesn't lend to attracting them to the sport. No harm no fowl just saying.

Funniest personal fishing story
Fishing my favorite lake last year using one of my favorite crank baits that happens to be discontinued I hooked into something large and started the retrieve. Then to my shock the line broke. I was upset to say the least and as I was cursing I look up and a eagle flies over and begins circling the same spot I had just lost one of my favorite crank baits. Thinking the worst oh no don't go after that fish you will get hooked I yell Noooo! Just then I look on the bank and a big deer begins making his way towards me. To my surprise he keeps coming closer and he gets within 10ft of my canoe then passes and bounds up the bank. Shortly after I tie on another crank bait and catch this tiny yellow perch LOL See pic. Sometimes it's not about the fish but it's about the wildlife and scenery.

How to get young people fishing?
Not that I totally disagree about the cost but you can set up a kid with a 20 dollar Zebco combo and they're happy catching bait fish all day long...No? Last year I watched a 8yo catch a 8lb bass on a 20$ zebco combo 8 pound mono using a bobber and a live worm approximately 10ft from the shore. As for fishing not being a woman's sport you'd better talk to the founder of Bass Resource Glenn May and his wife about that one seeing as she is fishing with him and doing the camera work in most of his videos. Also my experience has been completely different in that woman have 10x's the patience required for fishing because they're the ones who have the patience to carry a child 9 to 10 months and that in my book is the ultimate in patience.

Describe your fishing skills with a movie title ~
Big Fish because he works for years and never gives up trying to catch the biggest fish in the lake.

Newport Vessels trolling motor
The Dread Pirate Fisherman replied to The Dread Pirate Fisherman's topic in Bass Boats, Canoes, Kayaks and moreThanks and yes it is very relevant to me. I thought I had ok'd notifications to my email when people replied but apparently not. In any case your info has helped me decide to not buy a Newport Vessel and go with the Minn kota. That low gear is key when I'm moving up a bank and if it doesn't have one that's reliable it is of no use to me for obvious reasons. Thanks again Thanks I'll be buying the minn kota. Spring will not be here soon enough till then it's the river because the ice is still to thin.

Newport Vessels trolling motor
I'm looking to upgrade from a 30lb thrust to a 50-55 lb thrust electric trolling motor and was wondering if anyone has had good/bad experience with the Newport vessels Electric Trolling Motors. Particularly (but not required) the - 55lb Thrust (NV Series)model. Online reviews can be misleading So I'm asking here because I trust BR and it's members to give much more accurate reviews. I'm using it on a old square stern 16ft HDPE canoe because the 30 struggled against the wind gusts and I want to be able to move more than 1-2 mph during those windy days on bigger bodies of water.

Respectful fishing
The Dread Pirate Fisherman replied to The Dread Pirate Fisherman's topic in General Bass Fishing ForumI came here to get constructive feedback not to be judged. I was just clarifying but you clearly took offense. Next time just ask me what I mean. I do not like seeing any dead fish especially if they could have been released but were not and then left to rot on and near the shoreline makes for a nasty stink and does not lend to other fisherman's enjoyment of the shoreline because dead fish get ripe quickly on 90++ degree days. Even if the Osprey did eat dead fish they wouldn't do so when people are standing close by. Does that clarify it for you?

The Dread Pirate Fisherman replied to The Dread Pirate Fisherman's topic in General Bass Fishing ForumYes I would think that but as usual NH has it's own rules some of which make no sense

Respectful fishing
The Dread Pirate Fisherman replied to The Dread Pirate Fisherman's topic in General Bass Fishing ForumI got a definitive answer from NH fish and game. There are no laws concerning wanton waste for fish in NH but there is for birds. So calling NH fish and game to report it will not result in any fines. The officer I spoke with said they would not come out to speak with said offender. I'm fairly confident that this incident was a one time thing...Hopefully! If by chance the guy who did this is on BR and sees this post all I can say is don't be a lazy fisherman and move to a different part of the lake, buy a used kayak, canoe or john boat if catching perch and small bass isn't good enough for you or even better go someplace else preferably to a state that has wanton waste laws!

Respectful fishing
The Dread Pirate Fisherman replied to The Dread Pirate Fisherman's topic in General Bass Fishing ForumTo be clear I meant that those yellow perch could be used for bait or catch and release but the two bass were what made me mad. They were small but not small enough to be used for bait at that location. I personally believe that location is stressed because it is being over fished and I recently hooked a pike that does....not...belong there.

Respectful fishing
The Dread Pirate Fisherman replied to The Dread Pirate Fisherman's topic in General Bass Fishing ForumThanks to all who replied so far. So I've scoured the digest for info on NH law concerning wanton waste laws. All I can say is so far I've come up with nothing. In a state that has a ton of regulations some of which are contradicted by their own website vs their Digest it makes me crazy to think there isn't much to be found about fines or penalties for wanton waste. I will update after I call the main office in Concord. On another note I did get the park rangers attention and I'm sure if this tool shows up again and if he does it again the ranger will speak to him.

Respectful fishing
The Dread Pirate Fisherman replied to The Dread Pirate Fisherman's topic in General Bass Fishing ForumBingo! That's why I was so close to fully speaking my mind. In any case the only option I have now is to speak with the park rangers and let them deal with this tool if he shows up again. Agreed. Had it not been for the park ranger not being around I would have spoken to him and let him know. I may be back there in the am and will definitely make it a point to tell them about this tool.

Respectful fishing
Hi all, I was fishing today at one of my favorite spots. At the end of the day I walked over to another fisherman who was bank fishing. As I walked up I saw 6 dead fish floating near and on the shoreline. Two were small bass 4 were yellow perch. I asked the guy did you catch those, he said yeah they're just junk fish. I say those bass aren't junk and the perch are at least good for bait. I wanted to say a few expletives but he spoke up just before I did. He said, "those will be picked up by the Osprey." And wouldn't you know it just as he said that a Osprey dives and snatches up a live fish about 15ft away. Instead of chewing him out I simply said please be more respectful of the fish. Then he went completely ballistic on me calling me names etc etc etc. I just walked away and thought does purposefully killing 6 fish by one person equal culling? That being said I'm wondering if I should have taken another tract and called NH fish and game. Instead I go to our trusty fishing digest to read the definition and it says Culling: The act of exchanging a fish for one of the same species already in possession. But Websters defines it: reduce the population of (a wild animal) by selective slaughter. What's a dread pirate fisherman to do? Perhaps put em in the brig and lock em up lol. What would you do?
