How you doin' ya old Troll. I got a cousin who lives over in Whitehall. He told me he had half a lake of open water. Our guys are still parking side by each like they were in the church parking lot. Kentucky ! wow that's a long way, do they take American money that far south. I don't have none of that Confederate stuff ya know. As far as the ground hog goes we had that at the "Lutren" church in Norway Mi. when they had the lutefisk, and lefse dinner a couple of weeks ago....,UFFDA! ;D White Lake is openning up? That means the steelhead should start moving up the river! Time for me to beat feet over to Hesperia to see if I can catch something that looks like Francho gets. I was in Cadillac this morning and they are still driving trucks out on the ice up there. Looks like it will be close if I get my boat out of mothballs before I have to haul that down south. I'm not sure what kind of money they use down there these days, but I know you can't buy booze. No wonder they lost that war! ;D So it looks like I might be making a trip to Bessemer, MI the first part of May. Do you think the snow will be melting by then? WHOA ! I don't know what lake he is talking about. I don't know the area. Better check with a more reliable source to be sure!

Talk to me....., Just Talk To Me !
Don't get me wrong, I like where I live. I enjoy winter, late season muzzle loader and late bow deer. I have two snow blowers AND a plow to play with all winter. Ice fishing in my new portable is fun too, but along this time of year I'm wanting to cast a lure instead of looking down a hole. Around deer gun season I'm hot to go ice fishing. You know how it goes.

I'd say all of that. I'm pretty close to the U.P. border not far from Iron Mountain Mi. My kid was up last week-end. He lives in Chicago, it takes about 6 hours to get here. I drove out on the lake last week in in my truck. We had around 30" of ice. Permanent shacks don't have to be off until the middle of the month. Guys will be walking on the ice well into April. Ice out is usually around the third week in April. Two weeks before tick season starts.

So I haven't been around for months. Why? Because Wisconsin winters are long and there is no sense in rubbing it in when I can't do anything about it. The other day I punched through about 30" of ice, set up my portable shack, cranked up the little propane heater, and jigged up a couple of pan fish while starting at my "Showdown" ice fishing fish finder. I enjoy ice fishing, but I'm heading toward the fourth month of it. I'd like to hear a splash again when making a lure presentation. Today it's +1 out, the weatherman say 2 " of wet snow coming, I'm two months from the catch and release bass season, three months, three weeks for catch and keep season. SOOOooooo, southern boys (and girls), do your Christian duty, and tell us about how your doing NOW, RIGHT NOW. Are you fishing, is it warm? Are you catching fish, is it warm? What are you catching them on, is it warm? What's it like to fish open water in March, is it warm?

Scouting or learning the lake better
I don't know, I think under my coffee table might be the slop. At least with the Cabela's. Pro shop and other assorted catalogs.

Scouting or learning the lake better
Pretty darn good you betcha' Oh yah! ;D Re: bottom content change. I became more aware of that ice fishing, then in open water. I move around during the hard water season, but work every nook, and cranny of a piece of structure or cover before making a major move. Moving feet at this time of year can make major differences.

Gee Lund Explorer that was a pretty good answer for a "Troll" ;D I'm a Cheese-head, but I live so close to the U.P. border that I hope to die with a mouth full of pasty. Every year during the off season (Nov.-May) I review my basics. re-examine my lake maps, and plan on doing a new technique. I will JUST fish that technique until I have it mastered. As I review my maps I remind myself to fish my weakness's. For me it is deep water structure. Lately I have found bottom content change to be as important as structure, and cover. The best part of fishing is figuring out the puzzle.

Ladies Fishing
awesome! That is so cool and exactly why I want to have a little girl. She would be girly but know her stuff on fishing and hunting! Your niece was raised RIGHT! and when she climbs out of her 4wd pick-up truck, the boys see her first then the shotgun and rifle in the window gun racks second.

Created a monster
No it's not. The real is when she starts to catch more fish than you do on a regular basis! LOL. My gal has whipped me more then once. If she starts to do it consistantly then she can teach me. I want her to tie into a really big one though. Heck our regular bass season doesn't start until the third week-end in June (19th) She took the whole next week to go bass fishing (that includes our 43 anniversary ) Yup that's my girl.

Created a monster
No, the REAL danger is when she spends MORE than you do! Welcome to MY world! ;D Yup! It really sucks being the grown-up when she loads the basket at the Fleet Farm store, and I have to make HER put it back. I AIN'T GEARED FOR THAT!

Ladies Fishing
Pardon me for thumpin' my chest a bit, but I have a niece that is in her early twenties She likes boys (thought I'd get that out of the way), loves fishing, AND hunting with gun or bow. Right now she took vacation to go turkey hunting. After she put her tip-ups away, she started open water fishing right after ice out, and has been out bullhead fishing in low 30-upper-20 degree weather while the snow was flying. She ain't bad to look at either. Did I say "THAT'S MY NIECE!"

Using game fish as bait, is it illegal?
In Wisconsin you can use any pan-fish for bait, but you need to count it in the bag limit. Pan-fish would include bluegill, perch, crappie, rock bass, etc. You may also use any rough fish caught for bait, chubs, suckers , etc. I would NOT try moving anything that has touched the water of any lake, river, pond, creek, etc., that would include minnows if you placed them in a minnow bucket that was over the side. We have VHS and that is serious stuff. It can kill every fish that swims in fresh water. As a side note: We must also drain all live wells immediately on exiting the water and pick any debris, weeds etc. from our boats before leaving. I'm not much for government rules and regs, but these make sense. I guess I jacked this a bit, but anyone visiting my state should know about what is happening around here.

1)-Anchoring system for small jon boats. 2)- Other small jon boat rigging tips welcome
Ok so I just got a new (30 year old ) aluminum jon boat. I would like to rig a center bow anchor system so I could lift and lower the anchor from the back of the boat. I know they have everything from crank to power systems. My boat is only 12 feet so even a hand pull rig would be ok. I am wondering how to rig the pulleys so the anchor line would run up the side, then to the center, so the anchor would be raised and lowered front and center. There is no bow deck so I am not sure how to rig the front pulley either. I will be using a small 8-12 pound mushroom anchor. Do you think that's enough? Do you figure it will miss the front boat handle. I have a 17 foot bass boat with a 115 Yamaha, 2 - 12 foot canoes, now the Jon boat. I got the Jon boat for me, and the wife. We are getting older, and the canoes are getting to hard to fish in, and get in and out of. I figure I can put in removable seats, and run it with an old trolling motor I have. I figure to get a trailer down the road, but for now I will use it as a car topper. With the abundance of small lakes in the National forest that our place adjoins, we want to use the Jon boat to go lake hopping. We have at times gone to 3-4 different lakes in a day. Any of you folks into this? Do you have any tips, and tricks to rigging your boat, how about loading and unloading? Photos would be nice also.

Crappie n00b
Ok..,I got it . Kind of like fly fishing then. They hit you lift. Thanks..., sorry about the hi-jack. Now back to you.

Crappie n00b
I don't want to "Jack" the guys thread, but what is the "take/bite" like. Another words do they take and you need to set right away, or is it more like a live bait "take". Where they could mouth it, drop and come back, and take it again? I don't know if I am expressing it right, but I think you know what I mean.

Can anyone offer an opinion on artificial bait? NOT LURES !! I mean like crappie candy, Berkley worms, or preserved minnows, crickets, worms like Roland pitches on his show??? :-?
