  1. Same fishing scenario here, and I had also tried to branch out to other brands. Yet at the end, I still pick up Dobyns more often than others.
  2. I have the exact model, and I use it for jigs. IMO it's too stiff for jerkbaits, but doable when you carry only one rod.
  3. Nope, that's a 34mm size spool, but you know the drill: google "microcast spool for Tatula Elite."
  4. That's a 33mm size spool. The reel itself was put on the market in 2017, so google "microcast spool for 2017 Tatula SV" and you'll find what you're looking for.
  5. Sure, you can give it a try, see if the drag force improves. There aren't many parts in the drag mechanism, so if you crank the drag star all the way tight, with drag washers dry, and the spool is still slipping, then it's not the drag problem. It's the AR bearing, AKA clutch bearing. Normally, you don't need to put any grease in Shimano's AR bearing. If it's dirty, you don't have to disassemble the whole thing, just clean it with some Q-tip, and apply a tiny bit of light grease on it.
  6. Did you wipe off the extra grease on drag washers above the main gear as well as the ones under it? The drag washers on both sides of the main gear must have only tiny amount of grease.
  7. I assume you're talking about double supported pinion gear? We had an interesting discussion before:
  8. Sorry, I should be more specific. It's because according to my experience, while fishing braid + leader, I never failed to penetrating the fish lip with a mod-fast action so that I lost a fish. Most fish I lost during the fight was because the hookset had torn a big gap in fish's mouth while I didn't hook it on the upper lip. Fast action rods tend to cause that, and I have seen many cases of that. Also, mod-fast action will be better suited to keep a fish pinned, especially SM. While I am fishing fluoro, I will use fast action rods, as the stretching fluoro would do the work of mod-fast action.
  9. With a trailer, 1/4-3/8 oz jigs weigh about 1/2-3/4 oz. A medium power rod with 1/4-3/4 oz lure rating, and a fast action, could handle that job, but a medium heavy rod with 1/4-1 oz lure rating, and a moderate fast action would be perfect.
  10. Yeah, Daiwa's reel names could be quite confusing sometimes. Even "Tatula SV103" is not good enough, because this: https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/catpage-DAIWARELLS.html?from=basres can both be called "Tatula SV103", and I am not sure they use the same size spool. It's better to call them by the year, for example, the one for the first link is '20 Tatula SV with a smaller frame. If this is the one for which you're looking for BFS spool, then google "microcast spool for 2020 Tatula SV TW."
  11. Yep, I think this is the most reason people feel the drag force diminish after deep cleaning. You only need a tiny bit of grease on carbon drag washer, just barely enough to leave your finger print on it. Sometime I would leave them dry if I aim for higher max drag.
  12. Double improved clinch knot has been working great on fluorocarbon. It could reach ~95% of line tensile strength. The regular clinch knot or palomar knot pinches fluoro line too much; it will cause a visible weak point. Also, wet the line whichever way you prefer. I learned this knot from the G-man in the following video, but actually he tied a double clinch knot, despite the fancy name he gave it. You just need one more step to make it a double improved clinch knot.
  13. That's a great idea, but this TW leak also includes my account associated email address, as well as my TW account password. I just checked my email activities, there're at least dozens of unsuccessful attempts to login my email, dated all the way back to Nov.19 from all over the world. Thanks to the Lord my email password is different from my TW account password, but just to be sure, I still spent the last two hours changing every online password, including the password of this forum. Now, the things I can't do anything about, are my name, phone number, and address, which I am sure were leaked as well.
  14. I just checked my email account that is associated with my TW account. There're several DOZENS of unsuccessful attempts to login all around the world! Dating all the way back to Nov.19! Japan, Korea, Victoria Island, Netherland, Poland, and several US cities... Luckily, my email password is different from the TW account password. Check your email account activities and change the password!
  15. Yes, I couldn't agree more. I got hit on Wednesday, but luckily, my bank detected the fraudulent charges and bounced them back. Without the fraud detection, I'd be hit hard as I don't check my card balance very often. I didn't know what the cause was until now, and a little warning from TW beforehand would've certainly helped. I understand they don't want to scare off the biggest sale of the year, but letting customers know in this way will have a far worse impact on their business in long term. Since they don't care much about losing a small customer like me, I think I'd go somewhere else in the future. Sure they have the largest selection of tackles, but I'll get by with other vendors.
  16. So that's what happened! I was wondering who stole/sold my card information. Fortunately, the fraudulent charges didn't go through, but I had to go through the hassle of filing a claim and waiting for a new card.
  17. Just realized this is an old post. Just keep in mind that reels made of composite materials like Ci4, Zaion, C60.... , tend to amplify the noise and vibration a bit, leaving the impression that they're not as smooth as metal reels.
  18. Although it's originally designed for spinning reels, I mostly use the Fireline Ultra 8 on baitcasters. 14# Fireline 8 is as strong as regular 20# braid, about the same diameter as well. But it's thinner than mono for sure. Low stretch as braid, and it cast very well on baitcasters. I am quite fond of it. Abrasion resistance wise, it's very good. Like others' said, it may fray and get a little fuzzy, but that won't affect its performance or durability. Knot wise, I only tied it in FG knot with a leader, and it held up very well.
  19. My experience with Yo-zuri Hybrid includes 6lb and 8lb on spinning/baitcasting reels, as well as 10lb and 12lb on baitcasting reels. IMO it's right between fluoro and mono, no matter the sensitivity, the memory, the stretchability, the transparency, or the buoyancy. It's a perfect comprise between fluoro and mono. Given its low price and sensitivity, it is a good substitute of fluoro in bottom fishing technique. It's crazy strong, but has a larger diameter. I use it according to its diameter instead of the poundage.
  20. Let us know how it turns out. I am curious about the result. Also some personal experience for future reference, when I use a new reel, I usually go easy on them during the first few trips, give the gears some time to run in, because the run-in period does exist, just like cars.
  21. I don't know if it is a design flaw, but here's what happened to my President Limited Edition and Patriarch XT. Several years ago, when I first got the President reel, the smoothness was just OK. Though not obvious, some clicking and grinding were present. Then I accidently dropped the whole setup into the lake, but miraculously got it back the next day with a big anchor hook plowing the bottom. I had to dissembled it to the bits and gave it a deep cleaning and re-greasing. After that, it's one of the smoothest reels I own. Same thing happened to my Patriarch XT, not the dumping and plowing, but the deep cleaning the re-greasing. I got it during winter sales, so I had spare time to dissemble it, clean out all the overwhelming amount of stock grease and oil, and re-grease it with proper amount of grease. It's a total different feel when you reel it, worthy of the flagship title of Pflueger reels. IMO, the crazy amount of extra grease inside Pflueger reels is definitely impairing the smoothness of the reels. These are smooth reels with proper oiling and greasing, but how many users would know, or be willing, to do the deep cleaning and re-greasing to a new reel? Though these were treatment and improvement to new reels, I have used them for several years after that, even lent the President to my friend for some time. They're still quite smooth to this date. About how to fix the already "geary" reels, I think a change of main gear and pinion gear might be the cure. Also for future reference, maybe go a little easy on the new reels, give them gears time to run in, like new cars.
  22. If it matters to you that much, google "water drop wheel unloading alarm" and you will find some DIY kit to help you achieve that. It looks like this:
  23. Don't have the first two, but the KVD Smoke S3 I own is definitely a reel for heavy lures. The reel is quite smooth actually, but with a big 36mm(I think?) deep spool, it is not meant for anything under 3/8 oz IMO. I put 15lb fluoro on it and use it for 3/8~1/2oz jigs, a task it performs quite well. About the price, I think I got it from the auction site for 65 bucks, so $70 seems about right, not a crazy price but an acceptable "street" price for that reel.
  24. Haha, you and I have different definition of "arguing" as well, but let's move on.
