Thanks for the info @bulldog1935! You are a font of knowledge. Daiwa 500c reel (2 lb test mono) with Fenwick 149 fiberglass rod. ~6.65 oz total weight - not bad for vintage gear! The Ryobi is still awaiting a rod, so I'll post pictures later.

In your example, you can use the leftover 90 yards to refill the spool when it runs low by using a double uni-knot (or whatever knot you prefer for joining similar lines). Treat the remainder of the original line load as backing.

The BPS website search function isn't especially good, so it's usually easier to peruse the physical catalog and then use the website for stock status and ordering. BPS has had decades of experience putting together well organized physical catalogs.

Know what the availability problem is with the Presso's? I bought two (1-piece and 4-piece pack rod) in March and supply didn't seem problematic back then.

For finesse bass fishing, I'm using: spinning - Shimano Poison Adrena 267MLA (US) and casting - Shimano Poison Adrena 163L BFS (JDM). Both are 1-piece rods that are a joy to use. Model Weight Line Range Length 267MLA 3.25 oz 4-8 lb 6'7" 163L BFS 3.35 oz 6-12 lb 6'3"

I am right hand dominant but for casting I use the left with [right-handed] bait casting reels and the right with spinning reels. It's been working very well for me for years. Practice and it'll become second nature.

The Daiwa Steez CT SV and Shimano Aldebaran MGL 30HG (JDM) are both excellent finesse casting reels. I also have a Lew's Custom Lite and in its price range, it is very competent (and light).

Probably more about fishing where the fish are rather than gear. Buy a book on bass fishing that includes the basic biology stuff - cover, temperature, clarity, oxygen level, etc.

I fished 6 lb stren mono that had been on a spool for 30ish years and caught a half dozen bass with no line issues. The reel was stored indoors in an old black Lew's bag during that time, so no UV or temperature issues. A quick-and-dirty search shows the consensus view to be that mono only last a few years even when stored properly. So with those prefatory remarks, what failure mode of old monofilament should I have seen and why didn't I experience ANY failure mode at all (OK, the latter question is just rhetorical)? Bass caught were 1 - 3 lbs; no failures from old 6 lb test...

The modern BFS casting stuff is simply amazing. With the Shimano/Shimano setup, one can keep the weight down to about 1/2 lb for the whole rig, which is my current favorite setup. @Linewinder - thanks, the rod is a Shimano GR-1451 which is a 4.5' ultralight. I use 10 lb stren mono for backing and 6 lb stren mono for the remainder. I used a Shimano GR-1503 (5' heavy) rod for stuff where ultralight wouldn't work. Back in those days, typical casting rods were 5' - 6' and had pistol grips. I get the preference for the longer split grips now in use, but for ultralight casting rods, I still prefer the pistol grip. I have acquired some modern gear (which is amazing) but I still regularly use the vintage stuff and don't find it particularly limiting.

Thanks for the tip. I have two of the Colfor Shimano carbon casting rods but there is no way I would ever consider selling them. They remind me of some of the best days of my life - ditching school and going fishing. (Not to worry, I managed to matriculate at an elite university anyway.)

My nearest fishing hole is nominally a lake (Grant Lake), but it is actually more like a pond and I haven't caught anything over 2 lbs. So I prefer to use ultralight/finesse gear.

Ryobi V-Mag 3G (G refers to graphite/composite frame) with a Shimano carbon fiber ultralight rod. Note the cool cold forged aluminum reel seat. Rods in this condition go for about $500 - $600 on the major auction site. Combo works as good as new. Was my ultralight fishing rig from high school. I may have invented finesse bait casting in my neck of the woods. (Kidding...)

Livetarget, Booyah, Spro (standard and popper versions), and Castaic all make excellent, small versions of topwater frog baits. I've been using them on 4 and 6 lb test (!!!) and tossing them adjacent to the vegetation at my local pond and they all work great.

I've been using duolock snaps for ages and never had an issue arising from the snap. YMMV. It takes about 2 - 3 seconds to switch baits without even rushing.

What is the etymology of "tension knob?" When tightened, the spool spindle is under lateral compression, rather than tension. Odd nomenclature.

Kudos to Lew Childres for revolutionizing baitcast reel design, which Shimano and Ryobi promptly knocked off (both were contract manufacturers for Lew's).
