  1. ** Post Removed** Missed the pricing point. roadwarrior That seems like an odd choice, given the OP's ~$60 budget constraint. That said, the Shimano Vanford is a much better and lighter option in the approximate price range you are recommending.
  2. I like the Daiwa Presso 604ULFS-TR (4-piece and comes with case) for a UL pack rod.
  3. Seems to be the case. Buy what you like within your means and be happy. Buying stuff outside your means is eventually a self correcting matter that doesn't end well. Disparaging others who have different income/utility functions is just petty.
  4. I've had turtles chase my frog baits. Guess that means I'm working the bait in a frog-like manner!
  5. I used a drop shot rig with a very light weight in a similar scenario and it worked fine. The small, pencil sinker would still occasionally pick up some slime but the worm is above the sinker so the slime didn't actually matter.
  6. My heaviest spinning rod is 3.25 oz and most are under 2 oz so balance isn't a concern since the rods are so light that the mass distribution isn't even a consideration. On ultralight rods I use Tennessee handles and hold the reel with the stem between my middle and fourth finger which leaves my index finger free to feather the line against the spool. Does casting a spinning rod while holding the foregrip ahead of the stem even permit that?
  7. Attached is a photo of an '80s Ryobi reel which I picked up with a Daiwa Regal Gold graphite ultralight rod. The reel is a graphite touch and trip type which matches the rod provenance just fine. Fishes great for vintage gear!
  8. Most of the western shore is not accessible - fenced off and marked keep out. Tules on a lot of the eastern shore but with a fair number of accessible spots to fish. Gently sloping shoreline with lots of moss and other vegetation near the shore. It's not any easy-to-fish pond to be sure and it gets a lot of fishing pressure on weekends. I use finesse techniques successfully but the moss and the weeds along the shoreline make landing the fish on light line quite a challenge. Free but limited parking. On weekends, one needs to arrive promptly at 8:00 am (opening time) to ensure getting a parking spot.
  9. Fishing has been tough at the local pond since summer started as the fish don't seem to be in the shallows as often (bank fishing only because no boats, kayaks, float tubes, etc. allowed). Caught this one on a 40(+) year old bait that I bought off ebay. But I swapped in a modern ball bearing swivel and larger colorado blade, so think of it as a finesse swim jig on a safety pin type spinner assembly. Heck of a fight on 4 lb. test because finesse stuff is the only thing working,

  11. Interesting point. Reminds me of the Lotka-Volterra predator/prey model from differential equations. Although the model is over-simplified, it provides some interesting insights. In particular, predator/prey populations can vary wildly over time but some initial states vary far less, so managing the relative predator/prey populations can be useful.
  12. Original Stren hi-viz gold. I've used decades old 4 and 6 lb stren and it worked just fine. I know that the shelf life is supposed to be just a few years, but when stored in a cool, climate controlled environment, it seems to work just fine. Anyone know what the failure mode for old mono line is supposed to be?
  13. Cottontail rabbit and a bunch of wild pigs at Grant Lake.
  14. I asked myself the same question a few months back and came up with the Daiwa Steez CT SV - so I bought one. Highly recommended for UL or L bait cast use cases.
  15. Why? In that price range the Shimano Vanford 1000F would be a much better and lighter choice.
  16. First Zenon that I've seen in the wild. Not sure if it has been officially released yet - this could be grey market stuff. From the large auction site: https://www.ebay.com/itm/373618074364?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&itemid=373618074364&targetid=882300791467&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9032472&poi=&campaignid=1669934603&mkgroupid=65058347419&rlsatarget=pla-882300791467&abcId=1123856&merchantid=101491728&gclid=CjwKCAjwq7aGBhADEiwA6uGZp2XQ76IxfuB40do0TNChc7YZd-DamjA-AxqJ_EqwxWBAVGE7bY_4_RoCDNAQAvD_BwE
  17. An unweighted 4" senko (with hook) weighs a bit over 1/4 oz. No problem casting something that heavy. BTW, the stradic ci4+ has been replaced by the vanford which is a little lighter still, so the latter is a great option. I'm using a Stella FJ 1000 with the PA 267ML - it's a bit heavier than the 1000 form factor vanford, but I like it.
  18. To use a concrete example, Shimano mid-range reels like the Vanford are in some respects even better than the high-end Stella (though the latter is impeccably built and smooth as butter). TLDR; mid-tier stuff doesn't suck!
  19. If "around 300$" encompasses $350US, then the Shimano Poison Adrena 267ML is a sweet rod and is generally available from the usual vendors (e.g., Tackle Warehouse). Specs may be found here: https://fish.shimano.com/content/fish/northamerica/us/en/homepage/Shimano_Product_Page.P-POISON_ADRENA_SPINNING.html
  20. I also have a Shimano Soare CI4+ 500S (JDM), which I believe the Vanford was based upon, and it has the same gap.
  21. Interesting. Google pointed me to the ZODIAS_SPINNING page rather than the ZODIAS_SPINNING_A page that you cited above. Wonder why they have these different ZODIAS product pages...
  22. Is your Zodias a JDM model? The Shimano US site doesn't show a model that corresponds to the specs that you cited. https://fish.shimano.com/content/fish/northamerica/us/en/homepage/Shimano_Product_Page.P-ZODIAS_SPINNING.html
  23. The Vanford 500F, 1000F, and C2000HG seem to have a slightly narrower gap, but they have smaller respective form-factors than your C3000HG. As long as there isn't any excess lateral play, I wouldn't worry about it.
  24. Like racing bicycles and other gear heavy sports/hobbies, the tier of fishing gear just below the high end tends to yield the best bang-for-buck. Diminishing marginal utility and all... That said, high end cycling and fishing gear are undoubtedly exquisite when you can afford them.
  25. So @BassWhole!, is this the correct solution to the problem you posed?
