  1. Is anybody aware of any tungsten swimbait jig heads similar to the All Terrain Tackle Smallie Smasher? They have been out-of-stock for a long time, and I can't seem to find a good alternative. These are more finesse type swimbait jig heads for small (2.5" to 3") swimbaits. They have a relatively thin wire hook. I found some nice tungsten swimbait jig heads from Reaction Tackle, but I think the hooks are too beefy for the small swimbaits.
  2. Perhaps the question could have been phrased better, more like "what applications/use cases would this rod be more suited for". It seems obvious to me that that is what I was getting at. But then again, it's probably obvious to me since I wrote it.
  3. I've read this viewpoint a few times, as well as viewpoints from people who disagree with it. I will say one of the reasons that I chose this model with the DC is I watched a video about how to set up and start learning with this reel, and it appears that I can progressively back off of the controls as I gain more experience and eventually ease into using the reel basically "wide open". This, to my mind, seemed akin to starting with training wheels and eventually removing them, so it seemed like a good idea. Why do you say it won't make it any easier? From watching the video, it seems like if you set it up properly and with tight controls to start, you can basically cast backlash free with no thumbing at all. This comes at the expense of casting distance. What kind of bad habits do you think I could develop if I push my self aggressively to loosen the controls up as soon as I start to get it? [I don't mean for this post to be argumentative. But as mentioned above, I did read posts by people for and against starting with this reel, and then also watched some videos, and to me it just seemed like almost a perfect starting point with the ability to roll back toward a more uncontrolled state as I gained experience and skills.]
  4. WRB nailed it: 13 Fishing. I wasn't ashamed, I actually thought that they couldn't be mentioned on this forum. (I read it somewhere on the forum when I was new and reading all the rules threads.)
  5. Mann's purple Jelly Worm Texas rigged.
  6. These rods are not too expensive. I could just purchase a MH/F if I'm not able to exchange. Does anybody see any future use case for the 7'1" M/F?
  7. I don't understand what you are asking. Are you asking me to ID the manufacturer and model of the rods? If yes, I think it may be one of the companies that are not supposed to be mentioned on here so I just noted the specifications.
  8. I'm new to baitcasting and I'm trying to choose two reels to match the two rods that I already bought. I'm going to try to stick to just two casting rods for now, to go along with the spinning set-ups that I already own. The first rod is 7' crankbait casting rod with moderate taper rated for 8-17lb test line and 1/4 to 1oz lures. I imagine using this rod for crankbaits, spinnerbaits, swim jigs, jerk baits and worms and with something like 12lb fluro. The second rod is 7'1" medium casting rod with fast taper rated for 8-17lb test and 1/4 to 5/8oz lures. I imagine using this rod for frogs, poppers, swim jigs, and chatterbaits and with something like 20-30 pound braid. I'm looking for a reel(s) that would be good to learn baitcasting with and would pair well with each set-up. Right now I'm leaning toward Shimano SLX DC with the 7.2:1 gear ratio for the first set-up, and the same with the 6.3:1 gear ratio for the second. It also comes in 8.2:1 if anybody thinks that would be better for either set-up. Note: I assume the line rating on the rods is referring to fluoro or mono and that I could use a heavier braid with either (since it's thinner) if I choose to? Thoughts on if this reel and in the noted gear ratios are good choices?
  9. For me it's usually been chain pickerel, yellow perch, crappie (but we always called them calico bass), and the rare trout or pike. I also caught a small atlantic salmon smolt once.
  10. Yes, I was out of fishing for a long time and am currently gearing up for a return next spring, I've purchased lots of gear and baits based on YouTube videos. (Not necessarily the exact gear or exact baits, but gear that fits a certain niche and function and baits that similar if not exactly the same, such as flukes but perhaps not the same brand as the video producer.)
  11. I tried to place an order for a few rods at TW, but the brand I wanted was excluded from the BF discount. And they don't seem to sell the specific model of fish finder that I'm after.
  12. Looks like it will be ~ $55 when adding in all the other required fees, so she wasn't too far off considering that she only took a guess. (But my post should have made it more clear she was spit balling, which is why I said I wouldn't be sure until I actually do the registration in January.)
  13. Weird, that's not my post about motors that's attributed to me in your reply above. But since I'm replying to this post, the lady at my town hall in NH told me it's going to be $75 when I register. (Since it's annual and not pro-rated by month, I decided to wait until January, so I'm not 100 percent sure she is correct. But it seems reasonable to believe that she should know.)
  14. Which is why I never use a bank linked debit card for anything. I just use a credit card, earn points, never have to worry about some/all of my bank account balance being temporarily frozen, and never pay a dime in interest because I pay the balance every month. I learned my lesson 20 years ago when a hacker got our debit card just when we happened to have our deposit for a home purchase in there, and the hold only got released a day or two before the closing. It was very stressful, and using a credit card would have nearly completely eliminated facing a similar situation. (I say nearly, because even your debit info can be ripped off by a bank insider.)
  15. That could only effect bank accounts if using a debit card linked to a bank account, which is a bad practice imo. Although ultimately these should be reversed after making fraud claims, you generally have much better protection from this stuff by using a credit card.
  16. Also not sure how bank accounts could get involved if paying with credit card.
  17. If you rig the kayak smartly, you can always choose to go without the motor, electronics, etc., and therefore the kayak is suitable for more applications than a john boat. At least that's how I'm thinking about things in theory, having just bought a kayak that I plan to rig like a mini bass boat most of the time. But I like that I'm not completely restricted to waters with boat ramps and retain the ability to go "bare bones" most of the time. The only thing remaining on the boat when I'm bare bones will be the quick release plate for the motor, which at most weighs a few pounds.
  18. I favored the Romany, but I'm pretty sure that all his boats were awesome.
  19. Cool, thanks! I have some experience with sea kayaking years ago in boats with poor initial stability but great secondary stability (Nigel Dennis boats), but was wondering about sitting so high above the water. Sounds like I should get used to it pretty quick.
  20. How stable did the boat feel when seated? Are all your movements carefully planned, or where you immediately comfortable and able to shift weight around a bit without feeling like you're creeping on eggshells? Were you previously comfortable in a kayak, or is this your first? Thanks! (I'm trying to determine how early in the springtime I'll feel comfortable for my Unlimited maiden voyage lol)
  21. Thanks. Is it the NuCanoe bar or the YakAttack or another?
  22. Thoughts on the stand-up bar? They seem to be polarizing and I haven't decided if I'll get one. If you fold it forward with the engine deployed, can you then bring the engine back up into the stowed position? Are you going to rig up a system of cables to deploy and retract the engine, or is it easy enough to crawl forward to do it?
  23. I'm planning on getting the Thekuai Binder in 13.4" x 9.8" x 1.6" size. But I would be curious to see if anybody responds with different suggestions and recommendations.
  24. So I got my old baits cleaned up and then I ended up buying about another 20 of these plus a bunch of the regular Deep Wee R's lolz. I guess these are my crankbait of choice for mid depth water going into next season.
