Details Matter
That's part of fishing I enjoy. I'm VERY VERY picky about the small details. I find it relaxing tbh...making sure everything is just-so.

Soft Plastics kit for a soft plastic beginner
Lol I gave away four of these recently. New people contact me by email and I just give em one of these kits in a little Plano box. Here's MY list for a beginner: BAITS: Zoom baby brush hog, watermelon green Yum dinger, 5 inch, watermelon, green pumpkin Powerbait pit boss, 4 inch. Bama bug Zoom lizard, green pumpkin Powerbait power worm, tequila sunrise Z-man finesse TRD. Green pumpkin/green pumpkin goby HOOKS Size 3/0 and 4/0 mustad EWG and standard worm hooks VMC 3-degree offset wacky rig hooks 1/0 owner rigging hook 1/10oz z-man ned heads WEIGHTS 1/8, 3/16,1/4,and 1/2 oz tungsten weights...whatever brand is cheapest. I like H2O xpress bulk packs. LINE: For baitcaster: a good mono in 12lb, braid in 20lb. I like Berkley trilene big game or XL for mono. I use Hercules no fade braid in green or black. For spinning: Hercules braid in 10lb test. Berkley Trilene Big Game in 6lb test, trilene XL in 8lb test. Clear or green. NOTE: I suggest these brands for economical reasons. This whole kit is about $40-$50 total. I suggest less expensive stuff to people new to finesse fishing to keep the initial costs down while still building a versatile and well-rounded finesse kit base to work from. You can certainly choose more expensive versions of you wish.

What Was Your Favorite One On Saturday Morning?
Fishing with Roland Martin and Bill Dance Outdoors were my favorites when I was a kid on sat mornings

Braided line - which ones stand out?
Lol! I was highly skeptical too of what was being said about it...sounded too good to be true, but nope...he was accurate. I was happy to eat my words on this one for sure lol From what I understand, it's mostly saltwater guys that use it. I bought a bunch of it after that first spool, but I haven't opened any of them yet bc it's holding up so well.

My mea culpa regarding fluorocarbon line
Then it HAD to be bc it was nowhere near as limp as yzh. But I still paid $52.99 for it, and I'd never again pay that nosebleed price for a spool of ANY line.

My mea culpa regarding fluorocarbon line
Yeah, I saw a lot of videos on it...I don't know what some of those lines were, but some of them were horrible. The spool I got was very stiff and wirey. About like 30lb big game, but I bought the 12lb tatsu.

My mea culpa regarding fluorocarbon line
I bought it at bps, but I suppose there's always the chance it was a bad spool or something?

Braided line - which ones stand out?
I put this line on roughly last may sometime. It's been in the water at a minimum of 3 days a week every week since. It still looks new. It stands up to it's "100% no fade" label. Plus, it's really good, smooth braid. I've used it. It's decent line for sure, but it's more expensive than Hercules plus it fades pretty quickly.

Braided line - which ones stand out?
I am unsure how to pm you, but I can attest that it's 100% fade proof. I've had the same spool of 20lb black on my Revo SX since last summer, and I can take a pic of it vs the new line still on the spool. I didn't believe another user here when he was saying how good hercules line was bc of the low price, so I bought a spool. It's every bit as good as he said it was. The brown is more like a light khaki color instead of actual brown. The colors on Amazon when you are picking are pretty much exactly spot on. I use the dark green and black. prices for 20lb no fade 8 carrier..I have em memorized lol a 300yd spool is $15.13. 500yds is $18.77 1094yds is $27.53

Old school thread wraps vs polymer for guides
Yeah..sorry for the autocorrect typo lol Thanks for the input!

Old school thread wraps vs polymer for guides
That may be what it is..it just looks like black plastic under a clear coat
-
Old school thread wraps vs polymer for guides
I'm saying..I prefer thread wraps because they look good and are "old school." I looked closely at my gen3 veritas, and the guides are seated with what looks like just plain black epoxy or something...no wrappings. Just curious if there's an advanced to either using thread or something else to attach guides to a rod.

Old school thread wraps vs polymer for guides
Abu Garcia veritas rods. It's not thread. Maybe just epoxy or something? The Fantasista X and tournament edition rods are thread under resin.

My mea culpa regarding fluorocarbon line
Man I tried everything I could think of:. I tightened the spool tension down so far my bait didn't drop, I went up on the magnetic antibacklash to about 80%, and I thumbed the crap out of it on casts to the point you could hear it, and I could feel it unwinding. I DID have a few casts that didn't do it, but they were short casts. Anytime I put a little more into it, I had problems. The sunline...no problems. The xl fluoro...no problems. I have an SX as well. The brakes are quite a bit better, but I hardly ever backlash any of my reels, and the xl fluoro didn't do it

Old school thread wraps vs polymer for guides
All of my older rods have thread wrappings to attach the guides to the rod, with an epoxy-type material over the thread. My newest rods, it looks like some kind of polymer shrink-wrap maybe, I'm not sure. Just curious if anyone knows if either is more sensitive than the other? Most custom jobs are thread that I can see.

Would year-round daylight savings affect your fishing??
That was my dad's complaint too. Doesn't really affect my fishing much tho. I just don't like losing an hour of sleep when I only get 4-5 hours between two 16 hour shifts.

Chemically sharpened vs cutting point hooks
Learned that the hard way in Jr high jug lining. Big huge alligator gars will bend a 3/0 j-hook. We were kids, so we'd just straighten em back with pliers...until one broke and we lost a big blue cat

anyone have no interest in fishing with sonar, and maybe prefer the 'old wayze?'
The only time it bugs me, and even then minimally so, is when livescope is used by lots of people on small and highly pressured lakes. You get 7-10 boats every day pulling limits from a small lake and it'll eventually negatively impact the fishery.
-
Would year-round daylight savings affect your fishing??
That's my thinking as well. Just make the stereotypical workday 7-4 instead of 8-5. Problem solved.

My mea culpa regarding fluorocarbon line
It was on a Revo S baitcaster. I had it tightened down so much the bait wouldn't move when I hit the release, and it still tried to unwind itself off the spool Knot strength tested with a scale and Palomar knot. Yes...I wet the knot first. It broke at an average of 9.1lbs over 7 tests. The sunline assassin was one of the other two I tried. It was easier/more manageable than the tatsu.

I've never used sonar, and don't plan on it. I find fish by exploring and casting.
-
Would year-round daylight savings affect your fishing??
I remember as a kid my dad lamenting the end of daylight savings because it meant having to get up even earlier to go squirrel hunting. I find during daylight savings that there are fewer people fishing in the mornings, but tons more in the afternoon after work. Makes me look even more forward to being able to get out on the kayak again next month.
-
My mea culpa regarding fluorocarbon line
I get that. I was merely seeing if it held up to the claims of handling like mono. It does not. I'm mostly a kayak fisherman. Repeated surgeries put me on the bank til next month
-
My mea culpa regarding fluorocarbon line
Because it was suggested that I try it before forming an opinion of it, so I did just that. Yeah..I've no idea what I'm talking about lmfao! You don't like my opinion? Feel free to re-ignore me if you can't stand someone not acting like you're Roland Martin the 2nd and just taking your word for something. I spent the $52.99 on a spool of 12lb tatsu, and it performed poorly compared the the sunline and xl, which were pretty decent.

What got you "started" on your favorite brands? Nostalgic story time
I watched his show with my dad lol
