  1. Thank you . I appreciate the help . Thank you . My spinning rig has a Shimano Stradic (sp?) and I like it a lot . Really appreciate you taking the time to help with this .
  2. Thank you . I looked up the LowRiders . There was a mention about them having smaller guides . Everything about them sounds really good but I wondered - if I ever had to use a leader - would the guide size restrict the cast ? Thanks Tom . If it's possible , it sounds like you were doing this even before I started . I agree that the rod is as important if not more so . Things have sure changed . Back then there were only two rods . Pool cues or hickory switches Thanks Kevin . Much appreciated .
  3. Thank you . Good to know . But , at my age , durability may not be something to worry a great deal about What's the old joke about about not buying green bananas any more Still good to know.
  4. Thanks for your help . Not sure I understand mid cast back lash ( why would you set up the reel to back lash when you're throwing light stuff ? ) and spool end tension but searching for the answers here will help me in the long run . Unfortunately , I don't have my old ambassadeurs any longer . The modifications would be fun . Thank you . Practice Practice Practice . I can't tell you how many hours I spent back in the day casting an egg sinker at a coffee can .
  5. Thank you .It's a comfort to hear that I should be able to tell an improvement with the new gear . It's also good to hear a second opinion on the Dobyns . I'd been thinking about the Daiwa Tatula ( not Elite - too much $$ ) rod but will reconsider .
  6. Thanks for the advice . Another vote for the Curado . Things didn't use to be this complicated or maybe they did and I just can't remember any longer .
  7. Thanks T-Billy . All of this is great information . I guess I'll try a little bit of everything depending on time of year , water , etc . I know it's unrealistic to expect one rig to cover all the bases but , for now , I'll have to come as close as I can . Many thanks . This is exactly the kind of information I need .
  8. Thank you . This helps me a great deal when two folks suggest the same reel . I'll still take dodgeguy's suggestion an look at the Lews but sounds like the Curado may be hard to beat .
  9. Many thanks . I will look seriously at these . I should be able to put hands on a Lew's before buying and I think Lakeside on Hwy 79 / Guntersville lake carries Dobyns rods . Thanks again . I appreciate you helping me out . I see Luke in another reply also likes the 150 MGL. This goes a long way in helping me make a choice . It will be interesting to see how differently the new reel handels compared to my old 5500C .
  10. As I said in my introduction, it's been many years since I've fished . The last reels I had ( and loved at the time ) were Ambassadeur 5500C and Zebco Cardinals . I am going to purchase a casting reel and would like your advice . After reading many post here , I have decided I will put the reel on a 7 foot medium heavy fast action rod ( undecided on brand ) . For the foreseeable future this will be my only casting rig and post here have said that this rod is at least fair at most task . With much reading , I think I have narrowed it down to 4 reels . Group A - Daiwa Tatula SV TWS and Shimano SLX 150 DC . Group B - Daiwa Tatula SV TW and Shimano Curado 150 MGL . The were chosen with a good deal of study and a heaping helping of ignorance . If someone could suggest which of these reels might best work as a " jack of all trades " for my only rig OR if someone could suggest a different reel that would be a better all rounder , I would appreciate it . Thanks . Ron
  11. Thanks Keith . Will try tilting the back of the transducer down slightly and play with depth . I'm also going to open a dialog with the folks at Lowrance just in case . Ron
  12. Keith , I must have had trouble explaining myself in earlier post because some folks thought the problem might be happening with the boat in neutral . It is not . It only happens when the throttle lever is in forward and rpm exceeds around 1000 . Folks must have thought I had a big rig with separate throttle and gear levers Thanks Mickey . I totally agree . My problem is that it's a little over 4 hour round trip drive to get the dealer to look at it and I was hoping to avoid that . I know , I know , I should have thought of that before purchase but they had they best deal on what I thought I wanted .
  13. Many thanks . I have one final trim position to try on the transducer bracket but don't have much hope that it will help . If it doesn't , switching leads sounds like a good diagnostic to try . Thanks again. Ron

Much appreciated . Thank you .
  15. Cyclops2 , I'm sorry but I'm not really good at communicating on the forum . Old and tech challenged. The Lowrance unit works just fine when in neutral and , also , works perfectly when in foward at VERY low RPMs . Just won't work when I try to run at any speed . Ron
  16. Team9 , Yes , slight modified V hull . Was unsure why G3 welded on the extra transom bracket unless it was to hang a transducer from . As I said in the post with the picture , I have lowered the transducer 1/2 - 3/4 inch as per your original suggestion . Have not hit the lake yet to try this new setting . Will keep trying , Thanks .
  17. Cyclops2 , Sorry , I tried to answer your question in an earlier reply . The problem does not happen at RPM under 1000 regardless of whether in neutral or drive .
  18. Cyclops2 , Brand new boat and rigging . I have no idea if the Lowrance was installed by G3 or the dealer but would guess G3 did it ? Problem does not happen if at idle level rpms - or even slightly higher - regardless of neutral or drive . Ron WRB , This unit is the bottom of the Lowrance line and I don't remember reading in the literature that the ping rate can be adjusted on this unit . I'll go over the literature again to be sure I didn't miss something . Thanks . Ron
  19. I will try to attach a photo of the transducer set up . In the photo , I have readjusted the transducer after reading Team9's comment above . It is now about 1/2 to 3/4 inch lower than when I last tried it out on the water . Sorry for the poor perspective in the photo - taken with my phone and reduced to about 168K . Thanks again for the help . Ron
  20. I appreciate the help from everyone . I will post a photo like you ask for as soon as I can . I believe 200K is the max file size . Again , thanks for your help so far . Ron
  21. Just getting back into fishing and purchased an new boat ( G3 Sportsman 1610 ) with a stern mount Lowrance Hook2 4x bullet transducer . First time on the water I found that the Lowrance set up would read perfectly when at idle but , when any throttle was applied , it either gave no reading or grossly inaccurate reading . I assumed this was due to turbulence so I lowered the bullet transducer as far down as it would go on the factory installed mount . This did not help . I called the dealer and they suggested I purchase a Johnny Ray, LLC JR-3 Speed Reeder Transducer Bracket . I did this and installed the unit with the trim as far down as I felt comfortable doing . Still have the same problem . The transducer is located between two bottom ribs/chines . The Yamaha motor has a right handed prop and the transducer is mounted approximately 5-6 inches to the right of the prop ( literature suggest at least 3 inches to the right ) . If anyone could offer a suggestion on how I can fix this problem , I would appreciate it . Thanks .
  22. I sort of grew up on the water . Born and raised on Guntersville Lake . Started out in a jon boat with a mighty 3hp Evinrude kicker . In the early days , I learned a fair amount helping my friend run trotlines - back when there were still fresh fish markets selling cats from the lake . Used to fish local and regional tournaments back when Ray Scott first started B.A.S.S. After doing this for a couple of years , I realized it might not be a good idea to give up my day job . Gave up bass fishing when I found an old sailboat to refit - moved aboard and headed South . Long story short , it's been 45 years since I picked out a back lash on a regular basis ( I believe they are called over runs these days ) . Most everything is different now and there is a great deal I have to catch up on . I still plan to fish Guntersville but want to try to learn how to fish some of the deeper clearer lakes in central and Eastern Tennessee. If you can believe it , with all of the fishing I have done , I have never caught a SMB and I would like to in the worst kind of way . I will attempt to find information by searching the archives but , failing that , I hope you will tolerate questions that seem terribly basic . Thanks in advance .
