How does duragloss differ from permagloss? Is it more of a medium build type coating?

Looking to build the lightest spinning rod possible
Any kind of tools that you guys consider must haves when it comes to building rods? I'm seeing a wide range of prices on reamers? Are they a " you get what you pay for" item or can I make due just as well with a cheaper set? I have basic tools, I'm interested in the specialty stuff that . makes life easier.

Looking to build the lightest spinning rod possible
I plan to share photos throughout the entire process. I aim to show as much as I can so the next guy that reads or follows this thread can take my lack of knowledge and be able to walk through the process step by step. Hoping that North fork composites gets my blank to me soon so I can start taking measurements to buy up all the rest of my components. As much as I'd like to just guess and assume I'd feel like a bonehead if stuff didn't fit so I'm practicing patience and studying as much as I can about the technical stuff like guide placement, guide wrapping, epoxying, etc.... And I will DEFINITELY be asking lots more questions. This is going to be a long thread. I really appreciate everyone who has been answering questions and helping.

Awesome thank you for those tips!!

Looking to build the lightest spinning rod possible
Definitely not. For a thousand bucks I will be able to build a few rods EXACTLY how I want them, AND PAY for all of my tools and supplies. My whole venture into customs is because I flat out refuse to pay 1k for any rod on the market. I don't care what fancy nano modulus, professional athlete impregnated blank they use. There's not a decal in the world worth that kind of money to me. There's a diminishing reward with super high end fishing rods. I'll build my own on the best components I can find the way I want them AND have rods that will fish side by side with the pricey name brands. I'm not saying that some of these crazy high end rods aren't using the absolute best components available (some may be using technology not available to rod builders) I am saying that the amount of money it takes to acquire such a rod doesn't justify the cost when I can build something that fishes very close performance wise for a third the cost. My .02 That is a really really nice looking build Mick, what thread color was used? Cp or no cp? Please spill the beans on how you got that amazing red color!!

Candy apple or a shade or two darker is exactly what I'm shooting for. Seems like if I really hope to get exactly what I want with color I really need to buy a bunch of colors I like and wrap / finish till I find what I'm looking for. What has your experience with various reds turned up Mick?

I guess my worry with epoxy is ending up with fat balls ( probably an exaggeration) of epoxy on my guides. I've seen some poor looking pictures in my looking and I definitely want to stay away from that. My guess is that the permagloss with it's near water consistency would be difficult to achieve a "smooth" look like with epoxy. I do not know the exact difference between the two, logic tells me what I thought. I could be way off.

https://www.rodhouse.fr/fr/#comparator. This is a neat tool if it's accurate. Cool way to compare blanks reaction to different loads. The mhx and rain shadow rx10 blanks of similar specs are much less parabolic. I played with it for a bit and was definitely stimulated. Lol Do I need to use a color protector when wrapping with permagloss if I want my thread colors to keep the color from bleeding out and becoming opaque

Randy Blaukat- your killing me smalls..
How can anyone blame this guy for being original and doing things differently than others to make some money. I encourage anyone who thinks that randy puts out trash to start a channel and run up 65k subs. It's not easy. And his opinions are just that... Opinions... The guy has a wealth of knowledge. I don't agree with 100 percent of what he says but I've picked up a few things here and there that have improved my game. I appreciate his mental Monday segments as I dig his anglers approach at psychology. He does things that others aren't and while he's not the best in the game he's definitely good at what he's doing.

Gotcha. Thank you. I'm going to try a very minimal carbon fiber grip setup. If I don't like it I'll be back to cork for life.

Yeah I was literally like "?what is this guy thinking?" In order to not get the squeegee effect with the epoxy how tightly should my reel seat and grips fit at their given placements after reaming?

Those couple links are very helpful!! I've been watching lots of videos on wrapping and feel like I have a solid understanding of how it works. Those locking and blocking wraps definitely seem to be the answer to guides that won't pull out. The only video I've watched that showed someone prepping the blank the guy used like 60 grit, wrapped it around the blank, squeezed, and proceeded to twist the blank inside the sand paper. I cringed... Definitely I will use scotchbrite..

Ordered the kb just now. Am I going a half size up or a full size up on the tube size for the tip top? When wrapping the guides, how many wraps should I have before I get up on the foot? And how far up the guide will I wrap? I Want to keep it to a minimum but don't want to sacrifice strength and durability. I have a rod I plan to practice on. I'm going to carefully shape some pieces of steel wire similar to a guide foot to simulate the process.

Really appreciate all of your guys input. Received the guides for the rod today. 3.59 grams 8 guides. I've ordered a kb as recommended and waiting for the blank to arrive so I can size it for a tiptop. Can't imagine it will add more than .1 grams with the additional kb and tip top. How does one select the ring size for the tip top? Is the ring size the same as the runners? My current spinning outfit has a split seat and I actually don't mind the feel. I haven't experienced any discomfort in using it for extended periods of time. That said, I need to get my hands on something more " ergonomic" some time to see if I'd like it. Not against a comfy grip, just won't be on this particular build.

That rod is a beauty!! My current favorite spinning setup uses a fuji skeleton reel seat. So I'm familiar with the feel. I did opt for the model with the hidden threads so there is SOMETHING out front for the fingers to ride on. The new vanford is arriving today. ????

I did go the titanium torzite route and will probably stay there no matter the rod build. I honestly don't mind throwing the money at the most expensive component because what a new nrx+ cost will be twice what I have into my build.

As far as the reel seat goes I'm going to put a fuji skss with the hidden threads on. I'm very torn over grip material as I love how cork looks and feels but I'm interested in the less weight and better durability offered by carbon fiber, I'll end up buying both and see which grip setup gets the nod.

I might have to get the details of how to find out and take measurements after the addition of each piece. My thinking is that the biggest loss in natural frequency comes once you put the tip top on. It's definitely not a deal breaker. Lol I've heard lots of good about the x-ray, and how did you build yours if you don't mind me asking? Grips? Guides? Reel seat? And what's the finished product weigh? What are the difference in delta and x-ray? I've noticed there is a blank in the delta series that gets recommended for a dedicated frog rod. Are the delta series just more durable? Dedicated frog rod is going to be build #2

How to get bait monkey off my back?
I just purchased a vanford myself. Anybody know if there are slight difference in usdm and JDM vanfords aside from the normal customer service/ warranty .JDM metanium for example has a slightly smaller spool for example and smaller grips as well. I really REALLY like the metanium so far

Looking to build the lightest spinning rod possible
I think it would be interesting to see the progression of the loss of natural frequency as components are added, grips, reel seat, guides etc... Also sounds like a good test to run on rods if you're buying them from the store, you could take a lot of guess work out of buying what's best on the rack. Lol I ended up getting the NFC x-ray 722 in unsanded flat black. If I don't like it in the end I'll build another, but from what I hear those kistler z-bones are super sweet and wouldn't you know that's the blank they use. I'll build on a point blank or a mhx elite x. Man those are light( not the fish) lol I don't think Ill come close to that with an extra foot of graphite. Lol Next time

I like that pb701lxf blank for sure the more I read the more I hear people say" hell with what it weighs it's the best" this is the part I'm over researching for sure but it's what makes it or breaks it.
