Ramp Rules
i saw this TWICE!! two days in a row by the same couple! do not approach the dock way to fast while driving directly over the concrete part of the ramp that is under water, then over the rock "point" separating the ramp from dock area, the whole time smashing and crunching the prop of what appeared to be a top of the line bass rig, and then drop your hubby/boyfriend off to get the truck WITHOUT the keys!!! ;D i agree with the headlights off thing too Cliff

1st for '09'
oh ok so maybe like 2 hours from me. i also had offers from a couple others to go fishing with them on lake conroe. but it is just hard for me right now to make such a trip. plus i am trying to save up to get the rest of the stuff i need for my boat to get on the water. i really do appreciate those who have offered to take me out, maybe later this summer we can do something....maybe have a TX BR members trip weekend or something, kinda like the PA guys did. i sure would like to get a hold of a real texas hog!! my PB is only a dink 5lber. but being raised in the north, thats a d**n good one for me!! thanks Cliff

1st for '09'
finally got out today. it was a bit chilly with a strong wind blowing, but i toughed it out. i threw a rattle trap mostly, but one did come on a LC pointer (which i lost!). they wouldnt touch a soft plastic or jig it seemed. i was pretty excited just to get out, and with the cold front that moved in, i thought for sure i wouldnt do very good, but i got four. biggest was maybe 2.5 and the rest a pound and a half or so, all were keepers. i basically threw my bait and ran it across and kind of "point" i could see along the shoreline. forgot the camera so i snapped a few with my phone, sorry only the fish, you dont get to see handsome me this time!! and to make it all even better, all fish were caught on my two rods i built over the winter!! they worked great! thanks Cliff

Making my first rod
i have built two on my own now and two others with the help from a couple members here on BR. the hardest part for me is the finish over the wraps, i just cant seem to get it just right, although it is perfectly functionable (Sp?), it just dosent look as "pretty" as it could. but i am ok with it, they perform great and i would trade them for anything!! i cant offer any info on blanks because the two different ones i have used are no longer available for purchase, i have three allstars and one shikari. good luck by the way, a rod wrapping station can easily be built for next to nothing as well as a lathe for turning grips. PM me if your interested in how i built mine. thanks Cliff

Replacing/upgrading gear is about behavior, not deals
i agree with this, i do it alot as well. keith knows first hand as i have purchased some blanks from him, and i had to wait till i had the money to go get them (and i got a great deal ;D) also, i have been holding off on my trolling motor too. i could have gone to academy and got the $100 minn kota they have, but i am holding out for a motorguide varimax. is is a bit more money but i think it will serve me well in the long run with the variable speed deal and whatnot. and another thing is my spinning rod i need to build, got the reel in the flea market a month or so ago,(another great deal), could have got any old rod to put it on, but i am waiting till i have to money to buy the components to build the rod i want. delayed gratification....someone i knew used to say this to me often. help with cold front...
i am going out tomorrow for the first time in over a month. it has been up in the 80's this week but last night a front moved in and cooled it down into the 30's over night and only into upper 50's during the day. the prediction for tomorrow is basically the same as today, upper 50's, windy, and clear bright skies. i did do a little searching on here and found that most recommended going deep and/or tight to cover. i will be fishing from shore on a 72 acre lake here in texas. any pointers on what baits to try and such will be much appreciated. if my buddy beats me, i have to buy lunch, so help me out please!! thanks Cliff

Pet peave's that shouldn't be
fishing: knots left on hooks/lures. i hate that, a friend of mine used to use his baits with like 5-6 old knots and tag ends hanging there. non-fishing: when driving on the interstate and i am in the left lane, doing the speed limit trying to pass a semi or other vehicle. and some idiot goes flying by me on the right, rides right up on the semis arse, then brakes heavily and falls back in behind me cuz there isnt enough room for them to cut me off. IDIOTS!!! Cliff

Most Memorable Fights (with a fish)
for me it was a 36 inch muskie. here is how it went down. i was fishing on island lake just outside of duluth minnesota. i was using a 6' light with an abu garcia cardinal 101, 6lb test, with and 1/8 jjig tipped with a minnow. i was catching tons of dink walleyes as i usually did. was just reelin in one about 10" or so and it all of a sudden stopped, i thought it had run me up under a rock or something, then the drag started flyin!! i knew for sure is was a pike or muskie, i figured pike cuz they are much more common. then it just went limp and i was back to my 10" walleye, which by now wasnt puttin up much of a fight. then BAM! again and the drag zippin again!! after probably ten minutes or more, i landed it. 36.5 inches and FAT! i guessed 12lbs but others said 15 for sure. gave some dude nearby $8 for his disposable camera, snapped some pics and let it go. my little jig was actually hooked in the muskies mouth and my poor walleye was all mangled and dangling up the line. how i managed this without those razor sharp teeth cutting my line is beyond me, but man it was fun! i will never forget that catch, it was the biggest of only two muskies i ever caught while living in MN, the other was 32" on a homemade bucktail spinner, neither one was of legal size. Any advice on freeloading tenant
if he changed the locks without permission, isnt there something you can do about him damaging property or something? i would think that if one changed the locks and did not give a key to the owner/landlord/super, that would be a serious issue. if having a plumber remove the toilet dosent work, why not have a carpenter come in and remove the front door?? ;D sure it is a security issue but i think the owner not being able to get into her own property is a big issue as well. Best Reel/Rod Combo for a 7yr. Old?
my 5 and 6 year old nephews use a berkley cherrywood, 5'6" light and a mitchell avocet UL. i used 10lb power pro and it worked great, for them, not for me. i was using it once and set the hook on about a 2lber, snapped the rod in two spots. ;D wlamart gladly replaced it and now i dont use it anymore. of course i set the hook like i do when i am using my jig rod. otherwise it is a great little set up.

Really good rod for under $50???
i can vouch for the allstars as well. i dont own any but when i go with my wifes step dad, i sometimes use his. i have seen 7lb hybrids hauled in without a problem on the 6' med/fast rod. thats all he uses and has been using for years. Cliff

How old?
i once heard or read that a 5lb bass up north (NY) is approx. 15 years old. a bass of the same size down south (TX) is approx. 5 years old. dont know if there is any truth to it or not. Cliff

need name ideas for this...
this is my boat. i got the stickers and crap for the registration, had some leftovers, so i was looking to name it. i am up for anything so lets hear some ideas. the only thing i have come up with that i think is ok is "BassGnat" (like the tiny annoying bugs that fly around your head) the winner will get...well...nothing really, except my appreciation and thanks!! ;D thanks Cliff

Abu Black and Silver max?
i have a black max. i like it, for $50 i think it is a great reel. like someone else said, it is NOT a revo, there is a very noticable difference between the two.

ohio boys, little help maybe...
i am planning a trip to montpelier, ohio in july to vist the family. the town is in the very northwest corner of the state, ilterally just a few miles from indiana and michigan. i have spoke to my folks and they named two local lakes, one is lake seneca and the other is oxbow lake. i dont know anything else about them, what i would like is any info you can provide me. open to public? bass fishing any good? other species? my brother is planning to have a boat by then and wants to go fishing, he never really has before. so we are gonna hit the tackle shop so he can let me spend a bunch of his money for him, then we goin fishing! would like to put a few in the boat for him, so any help would be great. also, if there is other lakes within a decent drive please let me know!! thanks Cliff
