Depth finders, maps, and structure oh my!!
Hit the lake this morning and put into a creek that runs into the main lake. I fished the flooded timber early in about 6-8 feet of water, nothing. Then I located the creek channel, 16-18 fow, and fished it for a while, nothing. Then I found a point that ran into the creek channel and I fished that for a while, nothing. Then I found a drop off at the mouth of the creek and fished that for a while, nothing. There were three other boats in the area, two fishing the flooded timber and catching fish and another on the creek channel and they caught a big old fat one. I fished c-rigs, t-rigs, jigs, cranks, spinnerbaits, and some weightless stuff, nothing, not one single bite. I fished until about 10:30 then came home, now after I finish this cold beer I am gonna take a nap. Maybe tomorrow I will try again, I can usually wrastle up a dink or two, but a big ol skunk for today. Cliff P.S. The map I got isn't much help, it shows the old lake level and there is no contour lines or anything. Apparently a fishing map, like the "Hook-N-Line" maps DOES NOT EXIST for Lake Waco.

Depth finders, maps, and structure oh my!!
Thanks for the info guys, I have a Lowrance x24, nothing special. I just got off the lake, didn't have a bite. But I got familiar with the unit. It seems to work pretty good, but I think I need to be fishing the other side of the lake. I don't actually have the map yet, supposed to get it tomorrow. I will let you know how I end up. thanks again Cliff

Depth finders, maps, and structure oh my!!
I have been doing some reading on the articles page and also the manual for my unit. I think I have a pretty good idea on the setting and such. However I do have one question. I have used this unit once before the transducer died. I was using the the setting with the little fish symbols. It seems that the setting with the arches is preferable. When I played with it a bit I tried this setting and the whole screen was black. Is this a sensitivity issue? Am i missing something? Should I use it in automatic mode or manual? I want to get using this thing, might have to go tomorrow after work, don't know if I can wait for the weekend! thanks Cliff

Unknown fish!
I have never seen a sunfish with a mouth like that on it!! Is that common for a green sunfish?

How often do we catch the same bass??
Last year on a small golf course tank I used to fish, I caught the same bass three times. It had a very distinct "hump" on its back. Then again I caught a 5lber (my PB) twice and my buddy caught it once. Both these fish came from the same tank that wasn't much more than a mud puddle. Cliff

Depth finders, maps, and structure oh my!!
Well by this weekend I will have my sonar up and running, plus a topo map of lake Waco. I have managed to catch a few decent fish lately just fishing along the shorelines, but nothing consistant. So I am asking for a little advice on what to look for with the sonar? What to look for on the map? I have not used either one in the past, all my fishing has just been "that looks like a good spot" fishing. Now with these couple tools to help me, I really want to learn to use them effectively. I want to learn how to fish a point or a ledge or a channel. So any advice anyone can give me is much appreciated. Thanks ;D Cliff

The Dogs, lets see em.
This is Zoey, we adopted her about a year ago, she is almost two now. She is blue heeler mixed with what we believe is collie or border collie. Super smart dog and has tons of energy. She follows me everywhere, when I go to the can, she is right outside the door when I am done. ;D She is also great at showing off here herding skills on my two cats and my two nephews. Next up is Charlie, A.K.A Stink Face, he is 100% Shar-pei (sp?). He was given to us by a breeder my mother in law knows. According to the vet he has a whole lot more wrinkles/skin than normal, but he is perfectly healthy. He is a good dog but not nearly as intelligent as Zoey. Cliff

Nephews big ol bass!
That fish was not healthy. It put up no fight, color was awful compared to other fish in same tank, and it took it about 15 minutes to swim off after being released. It was probably 22 inches long and weighed maybe 3lbs. Like you said a big ol head. I think I caught this fish a couple years ago in a more healthy state. Either way it was good times. Cliff

Fishing with kids.
The key for me when I take my nephews is two things. First, I get it in my head before I go that I will not be fishing much, if at all. Second is that catching fish is very important. They don't care what kind, just any fish will do. Like someone else mentioned the old worm and bobber is a great idea for them. The way I look at is if I teach them now how to cast, catch and release, sportsmanship and those things, then the trips when they are older and we can both fish will be much more enjoyable. Cliff ;D

boat mod...help please.
Well I had it out for a test run today, and let me tell you it was great! I was able to stand comfortably and fish while running the TM, even in fairly choppy water. I would recommend this to those with this style boat if you would prefer to stand, it really makes a difference. Thanks Cliff

boat mod...help please.
i got the full length piece cut today, it fits good. however the board is not completely flat, so i will have to find a way to fasten it if i decide i like it. i really want to keep it "removeable", but obviously do not want to add too many holes, especially in the bottom. my idea would be to use a 90 degree bracket fastened to the top of the board then to the inner side of the boat. a bit of caulking and it is water tight. anyway i will let you all know how it works on the water after i get out tomorrow or this weekend. thanks Cliff

weather change....

boat mod...help please.
i made a test piece today at work, 21 (20 3/4 to make room for carpet) inches wide and about as long as my foot. i beveled the edges and it fit perfectly. then i stood on it and it was amazing, like a solid floor. i am going to do this with a single piece the full length of the floor. i think it will make a big difference. as for loading and unloading, what i do is remove the battery and cooler and set aside. pull the end off and set it down on ground, then go grab the other end still on truck and set it down, reload the stuff and slide her in the water. reverse process for loading. i too am going the get a new paddes seat, and i am considering raising it too. maybe on an adjustable pedestal to when i am standing i can lean on it or something. thanks Cliff

boat mod...help please.
well i was going to just lay it in there and see how i like it. if i liked it enough i was going to carpet it and use some liquid nail to hold it down. or just leave it unattached if it seems ok like that. i know standing isnt always better, but with my back i need to be able to stretch it out some. thanks Cliff

boat mod...help please.
Well i missed all but five hours of work last week due to my back being messed up, again. this time muscle spasms (sp?) and inflamation around the discs, it is a mess but slowly getting better, for now. sitting in my little boat on the hard plastic seat for hours is not helping it. so i was considering a mod or two to help me out. first, here is the boat. now a padded seat is definetly going to be added in place of one of the plastic ones. another idea i had was to attach a piece of 3/4 inch plywood(with indoor/outdoor carpeting) to the floor to make it more stable for standing. then i would put the new padded seat on a short pedestal so i could stand and lean my arse against it so i dont have to sit all day. i can stand right now but the floor is "hollow" and a bit spongy, making it hard to keep balance. do you think this would work? any other ideas? i guess i have to either find a way to be able to stand comfortably or shorten my trips. shortening my trips is out of the question so i dont have much choice. ;D any ideas are much appreciated!! thanks Cliff
