  1. Alright man, you wanna do the Lake Fairfax thing then? I've never fished there before so that sounds fun. Looks like a nice little place. We can meet up at the lake. Shoot for a 6:45-7:00am time? Any other takers welcome.
  2. Any Nova anglers free Sunday morning to hookup? So far I'm looking at either Lake Mercer, Huntsman, Fairfax, Royal or Barton. If anyone is interested in hitting one of these up I have a friend I'm bringing but we'd be up for hanging out and shooting the breeze with some new people or other friends while landing some lunkers. Ideas and commitments welcome. Wanna get something set in stone soon, so just let me know. P:s: I'm lookin at fishing from about 6:30am - 11:00am. Wanna be home for football and so I don't leave the wife by herself all day. Later guys.
  3. Hey guys, Maybe a stupid question or a repetitive question you guys have seen before. However, I think that this may be something cool to do. How exactly would I go about starting a club in my specific area? I'm not talking a bunch of guys who are interested in cash and bragging rights, but more so a fun and family or friend type orientated club. I have met a bunch of cool guys who I talk to pretty frequently on this forum that would probably be interested in doing this. What I was thinking... Not many of us own boats, so... for a fun day I don't think 30 bucks or so is a bad investment every other weekend or what not. We have a reservoir in town (The Occoquan) where you can rent jon boats at two different locations. One being Lake Ridge, the other being Fountainhead. I was thinking we could use these two locations for our events. If we get there when gates open on these weekends, all of us should be able to get a boat as there are quite a few for rental. I was thinking since it would probably be hard to rent a boat and put in cash for prizes each event maybe just having an end of the year trophy for the first, second and third place finishers. Anyone have an idea of how much it might cost to have a couple of small trophies made? I'm sure if I got cash from each person at the beginning of the season for it then plenty of folks would be ok with pitching in for that. I figure we could do 6-8 tourneys. Two a month starting in late March or early April dependent upon temps and the spawn. This would put it though to about the end of June or July when the fishing gets a bit tougher. I was then thinking the top five of the year or so maybe compete in a championship sometime in August or so in a two day championship type event. I think this would be primarily for beginners, amateurs, or weekend type guys who aren't into the huge tourneys but want to get out with another person on the boat and be competitive but also learn. I think we could do team meetings once a month at a restaurant close enough to everyone to discuss the two events held that month, what went well, what didn't, new things people are learning, patterns that got put together on the water, etc. As you can see I've already put quite a bit of thought into it. Just wanted to get other peoples thoughts and if they have done similar things or how hard it is to put something together like this. I don't really care about being "official" or any of that mumbo jumbo, just something to be a part of. Friends, Family, and most importantly the fish tugging at the end of your line. What do you guys think? Am I in for a long road or is it something manageable? Where should I start if I decide to do this. Any documents I should make up for folks? Flyers to put up at local tackle shops or such in case anyone else may be interested? Any restrictions I should know about in Virginia as far as getting a club started and such? Would I have to let the marinas know about the number or persons coming in for rentals the weekend before or anything? Any info would be appreciated. I can honestly say I would probably have at least... minimum... of 5 guys so far with 4-5 probables on the side. I figure if I do some looking around in the offseason and try and get a few more guys to consider it and give it a go, if I can get a 8-10 man roster I think it would be fairly fun. Only a 4-5 boat field to start off but maybe each season build on it or try and find others who were interested. The only thing I am having a problem thinking of is how to do "catch and release" but record fish at weigh in. Maybe use digital scales, or maybe go by length and take pictures of the different bass and such. Have length regulations as far as fish must be 12" or something to be a keeper. I would think maybe at the end of the event we could do a quick overview of how the day went, who caught what, how many, etc. We could have pictures submitted to a webpage designed for the club (that I would be designing) and then do official results at the meeting at the end of the month. I'm just trying to get it started and come up with an easy approach the first year if I decide to do it. Any help guys...
  4. You talkin' coins? My dad has been collecting coins for years and each year the sets and pieces he has been collecting go up in value, some considerably. My dad's been doing it since our childhood in order to give us a bit more money to put torwards a house or something later on in the future. A lot of collectors will buy these pieces in a heart beat to finish up sets or add to their expanding collections. Most coins tend to come with a certificate of authentication much like when you buy any signed memorabilia from a sports show. I think it's a good investment as well as a cool hobby. If your just talking about like stock or something I can't really help you here. Sure there are plenty of investors out there though that know a thing or two. Just a couple of cool links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_as_an_investment http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Types_of_gold_investors http://www.usagold.com/gildedopinion/hathawayten.html http://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/06/investingingold.asp Just a couple I got from looking around on google. Some interesting stuff.
  5. Andy, a friend of mine is taking me out on lake braddock on his boat sunday morning so I'm out for that. But next saturday my dad and I are going down to Fredericksburg for some smallies if you want in. All you gotta do is meet me at my place bright and early, I'm drivin. Just give me a heads up and I'll add you in. I have two spots available in my car. Same goes for others. Anyone interested just pm me.
  6. White Perch. They swim around in schools so when you catch one, you catch a ton. Especially here on the Potomac River. They will hit anything grubs, rapalas, spinners, etc. My dad has caught three in a row before and thought he had a couple of bass. When he was pullin em' up me and my wife were just laughing haha. He didn't think it was very funny.
  7. How big....? That's crazy for a pond that size. Does he have any pics of other ones caught in there?
  8. It really depends on the depth of the lake. If it is not too deep the layers aren't too different and there really is no warmer water to come up from the bottom (turnover) as you'd find in a river or much larger lake. So the water temp may be the same throughout and may be cooling significantly because the days have been much cooler for weeks now and the nights dropping real low. I think I heard on a previous thread that Lake Barton is 16' deep max so there should be some type of turnover. You may want to take a temperature device down to the lake and check when you go on by. Would give you a good idea as far as how much time the lake has in regards to "decent or good" fishing this year. Someone else may be able to provide a better answer but that's my knowledge I've found throught the threads and articles here.
  9. Hey Trev, avg fish between 2-3lbs??? Or are those just the bigguns you guys have reeled in? Can't wait man, just shoot me the pm with direcs from burke lake rd and I'm ready to go. Thanks for the offer bud.
  10. I'll be willing to give it one more shot. Let's shoot for that Saturday (the 24th) if your available. I just need to fish slower and concentrate on structure a bit more. It's hard to find the smallies when the current is not very strong at all. Not used to that. Different elements when there are no breaks like in the Rappahannock. Maybe we can get on em. We'll see. Again just let me know.
  11. Hey Trev can we get the boat in Sunday morning on Braddock? I'd be ok with that. If so what time can you be up Sunday morning to do so? Get me directions to your place via pm and count me in. I won't turn down that offer.
  12. Hey Trev man that would be a pretty sweet day. I would be ok with that. Wouldn't be too far to carry the canoe down by Aden Rd if we could find a decent path down to the water. I could park down at Cedar Run so when we get out I could drive you back to your car. I really didn't focus too much on smallies aside from the jigs and topwater I threw, more so on largies after the first hour and a half or so cause I was getting frustrated that my tubes, poppers, and jigs weren't producing. You know how it is when you throw on that senko though. Confidence builder man! Anyway, let's try and see if we can figure out a day to do that. I have November 24 open if we do it early (Sat after thanksgiving). Maybe put in around like 7am and be done around 11:30 or noon. Would be a sweet way to finish up the year for me. Let me know if you can do that. P:s: Do you have a canoe??? Cause I don't lol.
  13. Hey Bt, I'm hitting Lake Brittle Sunday morning. Are you interested? Not that I'm trying to hog up space on your boat Let me know if you wanna do that, if not I'll pretty much be bank fishing by myself unless I get my dad to join me.
  14. Josh, Congrats on the new boy man that is exciting. I was wondering why we hadn't heard from you in a while. I don't think any of us even knew there was one on the way. Great times man! Andy, Josh, Ron Saturday is out the window. I got home last night explaining my plans to the wife and completely forgot we were going to open our joint savings this weekend and I've already pushed it back two weeks so I gotta take care of this. We also are behind on our thank you notes for the wedding so she has me helping with this and then I have to help clean up the apartment which I've been promising to do for the last two weeks... yikes. You know... married life Guess I'm just whipped. Anyway, I am headed on out to do some shore fishing early Sunday morning. If anyone has any ideas let me know as to where you may wanna go. I wanna go somewhere I haven't been a whole lot this year, maybe even drive out to Lake Brittle or something, that would be sweet. Paul, I'll see you Monday man, we're still on to catch some of those lunkers! Anyone else chime in. I'm already setting aside days from my Christmas break (11 days paid leave for my state position) to put new trebles on my lures, oil my reels, organize my tackle, stock up on stuff I may need for spring, etc. I'm starting to get quite sad... it's not my favorite time of the year. But on the other hand I do get to spend some much needed time with wifey for 4-5 months while I wait for the spawn to come around. And there goes my first year as a bass fisherman.... gone... at least I made some great memories this year that I'll never forget, not to mention some of the great guys I've met on here who have become my friends.
  15. For you Northern Virginia bassers... Any of you found any good patterns this fall on the rivers, creeks, lakes and ponds you fish? I'm talking any of the lakes in Fairfax/Springfield (accotink, burke, royal, barton, mercer, crosspointe, huntsman) and Woodbridge (potomac river, occoquan river, occoquan reservoir at bull run/fountainhead/lake ridge)? I've been having a tough time getting on multi-fish days here. Most days seem to be pretty breezy and cold now and I've never fished in these elements. I've been using shallow and deep diving cranks as well as rapala lures, spinners and jigs. Haven't got out a lot in the morning so I really haven't given topwater too much of an effort other than today when I fished it mid day at the pond, but no luck. All the vegetation in the areas I normally fish seems to be dying or almost dead now and I don't know where to find the fish ESPECIALLY from the bank. If any of you guys have found some good patterns or good techniques this fall let me know.
  16. Hey dad, you should try and get off that Wed before thanksgiving. Maybe ash can come with us and stuff down to Lake Curtis. Would be a fun day. Let me know. I'll see you around 6:15am Saturday morning so we can head out to Fredericksburg and nail some of those smallmouth. Hopefully it will be a good day. Later.
  17. I fish the Potomac River when my friend's can get me on base at Ft. Belvoir here in Nova (Virginia). We chum with corn all the time and I've had officers and stuff come up and watch us not saying anything. In fact they would ask what we were doing and if we were catching fish. And that's on a military base. I know there are a lot of places in Va where it is illegal though. There are some LARGE carp in the Potomac. I have seen pics online at some carp sites and potomac river fishing sites where guys have landed 20-25lb carp. I've only caught one and it was about 7-8 lbs back in late March of this year. Thought I had a catfish because I was rigged with a live nightcrawler and had been fishing for cats all morning when all of a sudden line rocketed out of my reel and took off mid river... what a fight that was. Took me over 5 minutes to land him.hey are definately fun fish to catch. I may try that treble hook method with corn next time I'm up there. I need to find more areas that have carp around here. Nice catch man. Beautiful colors.
  18. Haven't fished it since mid to late summer but I did have good success on rapala floating lures in a minnow color and natural colored senkos (shade/purple/gray, etc). I would say as most of the grass is probably dying off, work the docks on points going into the creeks and maybe any rock lines or walls you see that form ledges along the main lake area. Temps are dropping fast so you may want to concentrate on that fall pattern but be prepared for them maybe to be moving off at that point to their deeper water structure. Good luck and let us know how you do.
  19. This thread is for Anglernfuego, trevbraddock, rondef, and any of the others I've been talking to lately about getting together with before the end of the season. Seeing as it's getting pretty cold (though temps will pick back up next week) and the fishing has died down a lot for me lately (been getting skunked quite a bit) I decided on 4 more days I will be fishing before my "fall season" ends and I pack up my gear for the year. Here they are. Let me know if you wanna jump in and fish a bit on any one of these days. Saturday, November 17: 7:15am - 11:30 or 12:00pm at Fredericksburg/Rappahnnock River (Bank fishing for smallies) Monday, November 19: 8:15am - 12:00pm at Lake Royal (Bank fishing) Tuesday, November 20: 8:15 - 12:00pm at Lake Mercer (Bank fishing) Wednesday, November 21: 8:15am - 3:00pm at Curtis Lake in Stafford, VA (Bank fishing) Let me know guys. I'm hoping to get my pb on one of these five days as I wanted to end the year with a 3+ pounder... but it's lookin' grim as of now. I think my best chance will either be Fountainhead, Lake Mercer or Curtis Lake.
  20. Hey Trev went to that spot today walked all along the creek down by the bridge and even down past the intersection of the two creeks. Found a floating dock aways down. Anyway threw anything and everything from cranks, jigs, senkos, topwater, etc. I managed to land one that was 1lb even (on a black/blue laminate senko) as I was leaving at your spot, and got another bite (but missed it). My friend Karen lost one at shore. We couldn't find the baitfish at all and it didn't seem like there was too much activity. Water levels looked good but I'm wondering whether or not the drought has effected the fishing here and whether or not the fish have moved further down the creek where it is deeper by Lake Jackson. Not sure. Looks like a fun spot if the fishing were to pick up. Maybe just not a good day with the winds and the cold and stuff. Anyway I'll post the pic a bit later tonight. It was easy to get down the path aways because all the weeds, thorn bushes, and trees were all dying and starting to wither. I'd imagine during the spring and summer its pretty hard to navigate that far down there. Good luck if anyone else decides to try it. Plenty of parking on the right shoulder before the bridge. I left my car there for three hours, no tow, no ticket. No no parking signs posted either. Good times. My friend Karen caught a 2lb 4oz at the pond we normally fish (by my place) afterwards. I got skunked there. It was her biggest fish in a couple months so I was stoked for her. We don't get to fish much more cause she moves to Florida next week so it was cool that she got a nice one today. Pics from today: Karen's 2lb 4oz My 1lb
  21. Dan found a really good access point after scouting with my dad. There is definately good water levels here and I hear the fishing is pretty good for smallies. I'll pm you details after I fish it tommorrow and let you know. I'll try those soft jerk baits, thanks buddy. Later man. P:s: That pond and the lake (jackson) are both private. However if you look on google earth and follow bristow rd from independent hill you will see a road after the bridge on bristow (cedar run). The next left after the bridge has two ponds on that road. One looks like it may have a house near it and may be private but the other looks like its between an acre or two and right off the road. It may be a drainage pond but I'm not sure. I'll check this out tommorrow and let you guys know.
  22. Thanks for the pointers Roadwarrior, exactly the info I was looking for. Later on I will invest in a rod for deep diving cranks, but I don't really use them too much now. Gives me an excuse for a new rod to buy next year before spring rolls around. Guess I know what I'm spending that Christmas money on. I appreciate your help bud.
  23. Hey guys I was just curious as far as what type of action one should have on a crankbait rod. I have one rod for plastics, jigs, and spinners that has a fast action for good hook sets and such (2 spools, one for braid (my jigs) and one for original stren). I'm looking to get a new crankbait rod and was just curious if I needed anything more than a medium action for it. I assume not since you are just reeling down to pressure and pulling back on the rod to set the hook (what I normally do, and rarely lose crankbait fish). I was thinking of using my bass pro img graphite medium action 7'0 rod for the time being til' I get some cash together for a new one. Should this do the trick? By cranks, what I use at least I mean Mann's Minus, Rapala Lures such as original floaters, countdowns, shad raps, and bomber lures. Let me know what you guys think.
  24. They got a tough road ahead of em' but they are getting better as the season goes on and Roth has got into his grove passing the ball. As long as they can keep a solid run game, keep winning those division games, and stay atop of their division it's possible. Anything is possible in the playoffs as they proved a couple years ago. The Pats game against them should be a good one and challenge for em'. It's possible though.
