I was reading the current FLW Bass magazine and they break down the specifics about fishing with jigs. (ex: football heads, round heads, swimming, etc.). They break down why one is best used over another.

Then I got to thinking.

Has anyone ever tied on a.... let's say.....a swimming jig, and after casting X number of times, decided it was not working; Then turned around and tied on a football head jig? Then right after tying on that FB head jig, caught bass?

If one jig does not work, does the head style really change the chances of catching?

The difference between the 2 jigs you are talking about is one in a moving bait and the other is a bottom bait. You should compare football to arkie(etc) for your situation.

I have never done that, but on a trip with RW to my club lake he was fishing a swim jig and I was fishing a football. Same color, and I caught 4-5 before he was hard headed enough to switch. He switched to a football but different color and we both proceeded to catch 4-5 more each!

When I fish my swim jig I do it a little differntly than most and it is why a Rage Craw works so well. I use the swim jig with a slow retrieve and I fish it right against cover and after a few casts without a strike I'll often reel the jig up to a spot I think a fish should be and kill it and then fish it for a few moments like a normal bottom jig. If I get a few fish using that technique I'll change presentations and jigs, depending on how close to cover I'm getting bit I'll either switch to a flipping jig or casting jig but only if the fish let me know which is why the swim jig is such a great lure.

I'm not one for thinking a head makes that much difference. I think size, color and presentation are more important. That is why I have 3-5 jigs tied on all the time (same head, different sizes and colors).

I basically use 1 jig for everything now (except in GRASS), just different weights or sizes depending on water depths and wind conditions. There's one important change I've made though that can't be discussed right now... but as usual, you guys will be the first to know about it when it comes out!

Same thing happened to me, The other day I was ready to give up and go home so I reeled my jig in like a swim jig ready to leave and BAM, fish of the day.

While football jigs are designed to be fished in rocks, grass jigs through grass, swim jigs swum , and an arkie kind of a general purpose, at the end of the day a jig is just a jig. Sometimes subtle differences are important as 00 mod's post shows, but size, presentation, and color are for more important than head shape most of the time in my opinion. I have caught good fish swimming a 1/2 oz football jig down a rocky slope...
