Mann's Baby minus 1

Featured Replies

What a lure!  This shallow crank was killing them this weekend as I ripped it through the top of some weeds.  It even got hit twice just floating on the surface before I started the retrieve.  I guess they would have eaten anything.  Maybe my new favorite lure.

It is definately one of my favorite lures. Where were you fishing, if you don't mind me asking? I noticed you are from Athens AL so not far from me :)

I was actually fishing on a pond where I live on a golf course in Athens AL.  Usually the pond is good for 1 or 2 fish each outing, but I caught 9 Saturday morning.  The bite was definitely "on".  Then I caught 6 on Sunday.

I have my boat stored at Wheeler in Decatur (where I work).  I'm trying to learn how to fish Wheeler.  I'm also just trying to learn to bass fish, so I try out new lures at the ponds.  I can get there on my golf cart, fish for a few minutes, and be done.  It's a quick fix.

Where are you?  Any advice for Wheeler?  I know it was kind of weird this summer because the flats didn't grow milfoil this year.

Need some help with this one guys. Fish around here have not been producing on anything that I am throwing. Tried senko's, fat ika's, different worms. Worked a few different types of spinnerbaits, heddon torpedo, popper blah blah. Now I have a bunch of crankbaits and yesterday started throwing a manns baby -1. Pond I primarily fish is really small and shallow  but loaded with quality LM. I threw it out all over the place. Mainly a fast retrieve and wham felt like it got caught on a log or something and then stopped the snag. which tells me that im guessing a fish smacked it and then went away. They area I got smacked a few times there is a log but its down at least 4'. I guess im just looking for some info on using this bait, what works, presentation etc. Also any advice you can give on what that hit was and what to do when you are faced with the above scenario.

Thanks in advance.

With a shallow running bait about all you can do is change speeds on your retrieve.

I was using flurocarbon, pulling the bait with rod movement, then taking the slack up with the reel.  Also, I was using a rod with a little faster action than normal crankbaits so I could rip it through the top of the grass/weeds easily.

As far as hits go, the minus 1 is so shallow that I see a surface disturbance just about every time I get a bite.

I just ordered some Gamakatsu ewg hooks to upgrade my minus 1.

I really like the baby -1 minus.  It was my producer yesterday in ghost shad.  I was fishing about 6-8' of water weeds about a foot under the surface, the perfect place for this bait.  Had a few fish on a straight retrieve but the most fish came from running it into the grass and letting it float up.

I tied on a - 1 about a month ago while fishing one of my favorite ponds. I tossed it out in the middle of the pond where bass were busting shad on the surface...when WHAM...a huge fish gulped it...ran about 8 ft...and then SNAP :'( ...talk about bummed! :)

ya my favorite little spots are probably about 8' deep max. Have a good amount of downed trees and gunk on the bottom so the baby -1 is about all i can throw for crankbaits, lipless do work well too but i have not had luck with either yet.

Are there any crankbaits that run just a few inches deeper than the baby1? I want to find a crankbait in between the minus-1 and the lucky craft 1.5

Can be deadly fished so slow it hurts at first dark...kind of like a Jitterbug. Keep it on top with a small wake.  :)

I just got back into fishing really. Me and my dad are trying to learn Guntersville since we have never fished there much. We usually go to Wilson or Pickwick for smallies, or Elk river. Elk river has been disappointing this year though, so Guntersville is where we have been going every chance we get.

and I thought crankbaits had to deflect off cover/structure to maximize their effectivness. :-/

Anyone had success fishing these any deeper?  c-rig?

Not really, I have my best success on these baits running them over submurged grass and structure

That's just one way to fish them. I've caught hundreds of bass using just a straight retrieve up in the water level without bouncing them off anything.

I love my Manns Baby

i love it even more because i found it just floating in the lake this year  :)

SPAZ - Try the Bomber Square A. It runs a little bit deeper than the 1 Minus.

The baby 1-minus is a great lure indeed! My favorite colors in the lure is gray ghost and firetiger. These are killer fished over the milfoil on Lake guntersville!

Thanks, I will give it a shot.

One time in january I seen Hank Parker on TV in new hampshire busting bass on the manns baby 1 crankbait.  After the show was over we were in the middle of a snowstorm and i had to go to walmart and buy this crankbait so i'm ready for the springtime.

I found out this is really a killer bait using one shot of craw scent too.  I even caught a large salmon on this crank too.   Its on the top of my list for bass cranks.

Crawdad brown is the color but i have seen the other colors work too.

Manns baby 1  crawdad brown

Bomber fat a size 05  in red apple craw

Bomber fat a size 05 in green craw

bomber fact a size 05 in brown craw

Rapala orginal floater 2" in blue

Just a few of my hottest fish catching baits....

I have a gray ghost too...works great pulling it over shallow trees and brush. Love them wake baits..
