Best Flipping And Pitching Combo

Recommended Posts

So I need some help choosing the ultimate flipping and pitching combination. I want to spend $200-250 and no more than $300 on a rod and reel combo. I plan on using this as my go to flipping and pitching combo as well as throwing some bigger swimbaits on it. I am thinking it would be a better idea to put more money into the reel versus the rod?

I would really like to hear some suggestions and reviews. I have been doing a ton of research and looking up reviews but I want to make sure my mind is made up before I make a purchase. I would love to hear from some of you guys who have tested and tried quite a few different rods and reels.

Help me find the ultimate setup within my budget! I have some rods and reels that come to mind but if you have a different suggestion please let me know.

For reels a few that come to mind are:

Ardent denny Brauer flipping reel

Revo winch

A shimano (don't know the best one for flipping but I love my Curado 5oE

Quantum Antix

For Rods:

Abu Garcia Veritas

Skeet reese honeycomb

Carrrot Stik

Quantum Tommy Biffle/ Greg Hackney series rod

I plan on putting some 65# braid, and use a fluro leader if needed. But I can always be talked out of braid and into some heavy flouro if it is more effective.

your gonna get a tooon of different suggestions but ill start it off. i have the ardent f700 denny brauer sig. reel and that thing is a beeast! i love it. i now, as of about an hour ago have that on a dobyns champion 805 punch/flip and it feels and looks great. the rod is a liiittlle tip heavy but im not complaining, weight, ect doesnt bug me like other people. to stay within your price range id go with that reel from experience and the veritas. awesome, powerful, sensitive combo but from what i hear, the biffle/hackney rods arent too bad either. powell makes great rods and their max 765 or endurance 775 would be great.

My flipping setup:

Quantum Accurist PT570 (~$80)

Dobyns 805C (~$200 on sale)

My punching setup:

Quantum Accurist PT570 (~$80)

Dobyns 766SS (~$130 on sale)

Those Accurists are awesome reels for the money....both reels are over five years old and have taken a tremendous amount of abuse in the 2.5years I've owned them. One of the best value deals in bass fishing, IMO.

I'm fairly partial to Dobyns on the vertical setups. The 766 is one of the only Savvy rods with the full length cork grip (a must for me personally on jig/flip/punch setups) and is sensitive enough for punching. I love the 805C but that 766 is a very good deal for the money.

The rod prices I mentioned above include the 20% that vendors have 2-3 times a year (never pay full price). Either setup gets you within your price range.

I have a:

Quantum Superlite 7'11" telescoping rod ($60 New off ebay)

Quantum Accurist PT 501 ($60 New off Ebaby)

The rod I caught on sale from one of the sellers on ebay after reading a tackle tour review of the rod and also got the reel after a review as well and the reel has 50# braid.

My suggestion(s):

Phenix Recon 764 or 766 ($170) or Powell Endurance 775C ($170)

Pflueger President ($150) (has a 20lb drag and is super smooth!)

Thanks for the input and keep the suggestions coming! Hey msolorio how is the flipping trigger on the ardent? I have heard great reviews and then others where its seems to misfunction.

I will definitely look into a Dobyns if I catch it at the right time. I have only heard amazing things about their rods. When usually does the vendor have a sale like that?

And from the sounds of it there are no problems with braid. Already had my eye on some suffix 832 lime, maybe ill lower it to 50# to get a little extra on my spool

i dont ever use the flippin switch. mine doesnt work like it should but other than that this reel is awesome. yea dobyns makes a great rod. i got a couple today, one being that aforementioned 805. i didnt like their 735 but that could have been because its not reeaally suited for what i was using it for. i might be stickin to all dobyns rods from now on. they make the savvy series which sells for 149.99 and is a great buy. vendor sales, idk exactly, it varies. yea braid is just fine. i use 50lb sunline fx 2 and its amazing to say the least. power pro is great too and probably the easiest to get ahold of depending on where you shop for tackle. i noticed it does cut through vegetation really good.

To keep the price well within your range and without sacrificing any performance, I'd look into the Abu Garica Revo S and either the 7'6' or 7'11' Veritas rods.
