Question About The Spawn.

Recommended Posts

I live in Philadelphia, PA. Some people Ive talked to say the spawn is over. Yet at all of my spots I have not once seen and fry swimming around, I havent even caught fish with bloody tails. Take for example the quarry i fish. March and April there was lots of bass up shallow sitting on beds. Then May came, we had a few fronts come through and they all disappeared back out deep. Not once this season have i caught a fish out of there with a beat up tail, also havent seen any bass fry what so ever. Wouldnt I see fry after theyve hatched?Shouldnt I have been catching bass with beat up tails? Even in the river spots I have, same deal. Im confused?

Yeah this year has been the worst I have seen, non typical spawning habbits for sure, bass will (and I mean some not all) spawn more than once. It is very difficult to come across them, but it's a fact.

Yea I mean I thought Id see males and females on beds, fry all over the place after they hatched, males on the bed guarding those fry. But like i said in March and April I did see males and females on beds then they just disappeared. Is it possible that after catching them they decided to spawn elsewhere on the lake? lol. Ive been all over the lake, its not big at all. Had the boat on it last week. I still see a few smaller bass shallow but most other fish moved deeper. Its just confusing. Its almost like the spawn just shut off.

Friends from Pa. area are telling me that the spawn is basically done there as well but rest assured, there are some fish that will show up later ;)

I live about an hour east of pittsburgh and it's been done here for about 2 weeks. I agree with you though it was a really weird spawn I only saw fish on beds for about 3 days before a front blew through and never saw em up again.

But there's always a few fish who were deep in the spring and didn't get the memo.....especially here in New England in NH and VT you can still find some lucky couples dating through July. Don't let anything surprise you.....especially this year.

Great thread. Thank Gawd I am not the only one. I have been out 5-7 times on my home lake since I have put the boat on the dock, and for the past 4 time I have only caught a few dinks here and thier. It's as if the whole pattern that I have worked out over the years for my lake just is not producing this year. Everything is off.

Fish have been done here for a bit- Start of May they were full of eggs still, end of may they were done- post spawn/summer patter pretty easy to spot at this point.
