Old Reel Question.

Featured Replies

Hi, I was wondering if an old Ambassadeur 5000c would be a good reel if I just took it all apart and oiled everything. I am working on getting the corrosion off ( which hasn't gone through the metal ) of the reel and maybe start using it. But the question is the reel a decent one? It still works and everything, just needs oil. And also I recently found a 6' rod, could I use spinnerbaits, jigs, crankbaits, ect ( or however you say it ). So if you guys could help me out here that would be great. Have a nice day.

Those were great reels. Have at it!

Those reels are built like a tank and perfectly fishable. I recondition them regularly with very good results. Paired with a 6' rod you may find the combo mismatched by today's standards but when the reel came out 5 1'2 and 6' pistol grip rods were common.

You should be able to toss any 1/2 oz > bait without issue. Getting the outside cleaned up and basic oiling isa good start but if there is corrosion on the outside the inside should be deep cleaned before oiling.

The rod that I found with it was an Abu Garcia 5'6. And from what I've heard people say is that it is a technique only rod. But no one told me that technique lol. So would a 5'6 rod be good for that stuff or no?

Topwater, jerkbaits, short distance spinnerbaits, shallow cranks...

I have a few short (6' or less) rods dedicated to in close spinnerbait casting, dock skipping and topwater. If you have a lure weight rating and action I can give you a better idea where it will perform best. Still, don't get too hung up on technique specifics. For example, one of the best Frog Rods I built was on a light salt water blank.

Any ideas?

Shallow crank baits and topwater. Maybe a little light for a full sized Spook but Jrs, Sammies, Pop-rs. Will still work as an up close spinnerbait rod. Could make a decent stream smallie, bank rod to throw whatever.

So jigs won't work?

I found a zebco rod lol. It is 6', would it work with a Dawai Triforce 153c?

Sure jigs will work. Any combo can be used for any presentation, it just might not be the optimum. Most prefer a 7' fast action for jigs and plastics but if you don't have a setup like that "run what ya' brung".

Sweet reel.

Thank you guys very much. We are going to put 12# mono, or floro. Which one should I do?

Just remember it only has a 3.8:1 gear ratio,so I don't think you'll be using it for buzz baits LOL! That reel is a tank, and will last forever. You can upgrade to a 4.7:1 ,but pinion gears are hard to find.

That was a class reel in its day. Nothin wrong with it today.
