hey guys,

i'm looking for a new jig rod. i mostly throw 3/8oz jigs but i want a rod that can handle up to 1oz plus. so i can fish bigger jigs, flipping and pitching 1/2oz or 1oz T-Rigged baits and also would like it for the use of carolina rigging in deep water.

was looking at the Dobyns XD745C but i wasn't sure how i feel about the mag heavy as i only fished medium heavy rods up to this point. Also how does the split cork vs full cork compare on a rod for this? is it personal preference or better weight balance?

just wanted to see other peoples thoughts before i made a purchase. but i really want to stay with Dobyns for this type of rod.

The 745 is a phenomenal jig rod. Couldn't be happier with mine. I personally like the full grip. Some like the split. I've never handled a split grip 745, so I couldn't tell you the difference between the two. For the techniques you listed, I think the 745 will fit the bill perfectly.

I haven't tried the Extreme, but like SoFla, I like the 5 power as well. I'm using a Champion 735C and it's perfect for what you want to do.

As for split vs full grip, the full grips balance slightly better. Comparing a 734 in both grips, the full grip balances about an inch closer to the reel seat than the split grip. Does it matter on the water? Maybe not, but I like having balanced setups. Less strain on the wrists.

Split grips look cool, but I prefer full grip for all day fishing.

I have the 765 flippin rod and I wouldn't trade it for anything, cost more then any of my other combos but 90% of my time on te water is pitching flipping and punching and this rod is perfect very light very well balanced I use it with a ardent f700 and couldn't be happier never had any trouble with thick mats or pads, the rod is at te top of its class IMHO. And if your serious about it would be money well spent.

If you're fishing around weeds or heavy cover, I'd stay away from 4 power Dobyns rods for general jig fishing with jigs above 3/8 oz. I personally think that 734 and DX744 would be a terrible choice for flipping and pitching jigs heavier then that. They're just to soft near the tip and don't have the backbone for heavy cover. I use 744 for deep water, light cover football jigging and 1/4-3/8 oz swim jigs. The 735 and DX795 are better suited for jigging with a variety of medium to heavy weights.

I Haven't handled the DX745, but I bet it's a really nice rod. I'd have to recommend the 735. It's a great all-purpose jig and worm rod and maybe the most versatile bass fishing rod I've ever owned.

Ive been trying to get a 735 for the last month or so...My last one i ordered was broke during shipping. I returned it then they told me Dobyns would be out of the 735 for few weeks. Im still waiting for it!

I have a dx744c and love it, I want a 745 as well, to cover the wide spectrum of jigs and trigs I throw.
