Do Capacities And Ratings On A Rod Really Matter?

Featured Replies

Hello,

I just recently bought a kistler micro helium spinning rod and am looking to pair it up with a wavespin DHz reel. On the rod it "limits" line rating from 12-17 lb. the wavespin dh 3000z has a "limit" from 6-10 lb, but the 4000z has a "limit" from 8-12 lbs. there is a chart on wavespin.com that says the 3000z is best suited for bass/pike, walleye, trout, panfish, crappie, and salmon which is what I fish for 99.999999% of the time. The 3000z's recommended line rating doesn't go to 12 lb though! And the 4000z is suited for bass/pike, musky, catfish, and salmon and I fish for bass, trout, and walleye most of the time! Is it okay to put 10 lb test on a rod rated for 12 lbs? By the way the rod has micro guides if that were to effect anything!

Thanks,

Mike

Sure.

In theory, if you put on a line too light, the line could break before the rod loaded up and too heavy a line could break the rod. But 10# is so close to 12# it shouldn't present any problems.

I wouldn't be using mono 12# line on either of the reels, I'd be using 20# braid, some would say 30# and that's ok too. I'm not not so sure I would be using a 12/17 rod for salmon, if that's what i fished for 99% of the time. I haven't salmon fished in many years, but my memory is of using heavier equipment.

Sorry I worded it incorrectly. I actually have never fished for salmon, but I was referring to bass/pike, walleye, trout, and crappie which I fish for 99.9999% of the time. Sorry for the mix-up! I am going to order the dh3000z!

Thanks for the help guys,

Mike

Line ratings on a rod are the least useful rating IMO especially with popularity of braid. Just keep in maind to adjust your drag properly to protect the whole rig. Lure weight ratings will give you an idea of how well the rod will cast certain lures but this is a subjective rating and can be stretched within reason in most cases. As far as line ratings on a reel, that's more to show line capacity.
