What Cause That "hum" On The Baitcaster?

I have a few 100-150 price range baitcasters and have been primarily using them lately. I pulled an older Quantum Iron out of the box lubed and cleaned it today. Had a medium rod I thought I might make a 2nd jig set up with.

Spooled it up with 15 pound fluoro and set it all up. First cast noticed that "hum".

What causes that? Is it typical with a lower quality reel or is something worn out etc? No backlashes or casting issues that I could tell.

I do remember dad paying like 80 bucks for it from Cabelas 10 years ago or so, so I know its not the most expensive but not a 20 dollar walmart special.

Maybe the spool bearings are going?

Bad bearing noise is usually described as a screech. Reels are built to varying tolerances and designs. Where ever there are moving parts some degree of sound can be expected, whether or not the sounds rise to the level of noise, indicating a problem can only be determined by personal experience or a hands on inspection.

True. I have a Shakespeare Sigma as a loaner reel that I bought new. Does the same thing as this Quantum. Not a screech, more of a low bzzzzzzzzz as it leaves the reel.

The Iron series just make a humming noise. I have an old IR3, and i]t hums. I think it's just the brakes.

I've noticed that it seems like Quantum reels have a signature "whirrrr" or "Humm" to them.

I guess it's just the braking system.

I doubt the brakes on anything you've used is like the Iron's. It's just a two shoe centrifugal brake, like the old Abus.

The "hum" of the C-series Abu reels was actually helpful in recognizing whether or not the spool was in control and not over spinning.
