Recognizing Bass Ponds

Featured Replies

hey guys im from northwest louisiana and I have seen so many ponds that i could fish but i dont know if they are bass ponds or not....some are in neighborhoods and apartment complexes some are in the woods.....is there anyway to find out if there are bass in there without spending days fishing it and not catching anything thanks,

I would think it is a bass pond if it has some type of cover like lily-pads, muck, or dead tree's bushes where they can lay low in the heat or to hunt. Is there food in these places, like baitfish, frogs, mice, sunny's, and ducks( only baby's). This does not insure there will be bass there, but these are some of the things that, in my experience, bass ponds have.

I would think you need to either fish the pond or ask the pond owner, a neighbor, local kids or a local tackle shop about the pond in question.

As stated above, if there is any cover or structure in the pond you probably have bass living in it. However, I know of some ponds that show no cover or structure and bass are in those bodies of water.

The problem with fishing the pond is that they may not be biteing or want your baits that day so you leave thinking the pond does not have a bass population.

Please be sure to get permission to fish the property of others and have your Louisiana fishing license with you in case the local cops come around.

If you wear purple and gold you probably will catch more than if you don't.

P.S. Welcome to the forum. How about going to Introductions and introducing yourself and letting us know where in Louisiana you live so the guys can give you better assistance to your queries.

I agree with what Sam said but in addition to the two posts you can walk over and look, see if there are bluegills or minnows and how they act. There is a pond here with both but no bass and they swim free and are abundant and small. Where as a pond with a larger preditor they hold cover, are bigger because they get weeded out etc. also walking the bank you can see if you spook a bigger fish or see any juveniles holding close to shore. Good luck.

Appreciate the tips guys....well in most of the ponds there is zero cover, but in one I did catch a gar and a crappie on a popper and there are schools of minnows in the pond....I will introduce myself very soon....thanks again purple and gold all the way

One more quick question what in your opinion wpuld be the best lure to quickly find out if bass are present....I recently have grown attached to a chartreuse zoom super fuke mainly because that's what I have been catching all of my bass in the last month on that lure and all have been over 2lbs but that's when I fish lake bistineau in doyline, LA

You should check out Zoom U-tale speed worms. Working so well in ponds for me. Toss it up under some cover, if they don't hit on the fall then just slooooowly swim it away. You'll get a bite eventually. Green pumpkin, watermelon red and junebug are my colors of choice, but i'm in VA so it may be different for you. Hope this helps!

nightcrawlers have always been productive for me in picking apart a new pond. you may have to pick through a few bluegill to find the bass, but the bass will eat them just as well if they are there...

When I go to a new pond the first thing I throw is a 1/8 oz spinnerbait in white, chartreuse, or firetiger. That is my numbers bait while pond fishing.
