Budget Rod And Reel

Recommended Posts

Since I'm only 15 I am on a budget. So with that bein said I have a few questions. Should i spend more on my rod or reel. Does anybody know any good rods for seventy or under(baitcasting)? Also the same for reels. I;ve been looking at the berkely lightning shock. The shimano sellus. For reels the daiwa laguna and strikeforce. Anybody use any of these. I need a setup for texas rigged worms and what not.

Idk about the rods, but you can find yourself a Shimano Curado 200/201B for under 70 bucks on ebay if you look hard enough. Or a gently used older shimano Citica (B/D) or a bass pro shops pro qualifier. All great reels that'll serve you for years. Good luck.

The new Berkley lightning rods are great for a budget rod. I currently have one with a abu black max as my budget rod and reel.

A buddy of mine just sent me 3 Berkley Shock rods to replace broken guides. IMO, the rod blanks seem pretty nice but the Berkley guides are pretty cheap compared to most brands. That said, they seem a decent deal for around $50. But I would choose a Shimano or a BassPro rod with Fuji guides by preference. In a spinning rod combo, I think the rod is more important than the reel. For baitcasting, I think they are of equal importance.

If you want to buy new you can get a Powell Diesel rod for $69.99 @ *** and thats free shipping. Never used one but know a few who has and it lead them to dropping 2-3x the money on a more expensive model. There is no warranty on that rod, but by the time you figure costs a warranty would be all but null anyways.

Reels, Id suggest a Abu Garcia Max, Black Max $50, Silver $60, Pro $80. I have 3 Black I use as emergency reels.

Now your best best is to look used, check out ebay see if you cant find something like a Quantum e600 or e700 series reel, probably could get both for $75 or well under depending on which one and condition. I know I was about to list my e770(7.1:1) on there for $75 but changed my mind till I get another reel. Id also suggest looking on boards your familiar with for rods. Thats where you normaly find the best deals, I cant vouch for anyone here as Ive been here only 2 weeks but on another board there are several guys with good rods at a bargin price. Im sure there is deals to be had here to.

I have also used the Strikeforce reel you mentioned it was several years back, I would only suggest it if you want a 7.1:1 ratio and want to buy new. Its a good reel, but I just think the Max series is the most reel for the buck.

Get yourself a used Citica or Curado E, and a Sellus or Lightning Shock rod.

What this guy said ^

Spend most of your money on the reel. It will be MUCH easier to learn on, and you will enjoy baitcasting.

If you did it the other way, you'd end up just being frustrated and give up baitcasting.

you have 140 total to spend on both?

The shock or regular LR can be bought for $40 at walmart, which has a great return policy if unsatisfied or problems. That leaves100 to spend if that's the case giving you tons of options.
