Recommended Posts

Those rods get great reviews here.... Just be aware that with micro guides, you will not be able to tie a leader onto the braid as the knot will not flow through the guides.

I have not personally used micro guides, but know people who have. Some micro guides are larger than others, and will allow a leader but most will not.

I fish the 703 with regular guides and love it for drop shotting! I own 2 of them. Have not tried the micro out but im sure its just as good.

thanks for the advice i feel like micro guides on a spinning reel is 50-50 thats why im thinking about going regular guides its primarily gonna be used to work 1/8 oz to 3/8oz jigs and soft plastics in the crik mainly 1/8 tubes and soft plastic craws

If you are going to be throwing plastics and tubes, you will want a leader if your using braid, so you know the answer.

Actually most will. You do need the correct knot but it will work fine.

Incorrect.... I use the Alberto knot to join braid, and fc together and it as small a knot as you can tie. This knot still struggles to go through micro guides, and you get a tic-tic-tic as the knot flows through the guides causing a good loss of distance, and compromising the integrity of the knot.

I'm actually not incorrect and others will agree that you most certainly can use a leader with using microguides. Prior to using fluoro on the vast majority of my reels, i used braid and braid/leader and two of my rods were micros prior to upgrading. I used braid/leader /w an alberto knot and a uni knot. I had to really work on my knot tying to effectively do it but it is more than doable and very easy to use once figured out correctly.

Search these forums if you would like knot suggestions, there are/were quite a few topics dedicated to specifically micro guides/leaders. Google also offers quite a few options /w other boards.

last fall i was looking for a replacement (not a direct replacement, mind you, but something cheaper and similar) for a lost 6'9" mlxf st croix legend xtreme, i didnt have the money to go that high end so was looking in the 150-200 range, heard the great reviews on the dobyns rods and found the only dobyns dealer in wisconsin to be fairly close (about 40 miles away) so decided to give the 692 savvy a try. i got the rod for mainly jig/minnow and jig/plastics both vertical and pitching for walleyes. the rod balanced amazingly well with whatever reel i put on it, and i was very excited to get it on the river.

soon after getting it out on the water my excitement faded, to me there was just NO sensitivity in the rod what-so-ever, couldnt feel a thing with it. i switched to my avid, and could feel every rock, stick, fish, whatever, with the savvy it felt like i was dragging my jig over straight sand. i returned the rod and ended up getting a clearanced 6'9" mlxf legend tournament. could not be more happy.

not saying dobyns arent good rods, just would think twice about getting a savvy for bottom contact.
