Lures Stuck In Mouth Of Fish

Recommended Posts

I was recently fishing with a small jig n pig in some deep rocks. I hooked a nice bass that made a quick run to the surface, but my line broke right before it jumped out of the water. Honestly the line on my reel was rather worn an nicked down by the lure which I have since changed. However, I was wondering what would happen to the bass with that lure in its mouth? Would it eventually shake it out? If it doesn't, will the lure hamper the fish somehow? I know I have caught some striped bass that had flukes in their stomachs.

Most of the time they will jump & try to shake it out. Some fish will rub it out on the bottom. I have had smallies once hooked head straight down & even temporarily snag me up trying to rub that bait out of their mouth.

X2, it won't be there too long.

I've read that some lunkers have been found with plastic baits stuck in their guts and keeps them from being able to digest, so maybe.

I've caught them with worm hooks still stuck in their lip before but generally I would guess they shake them out.

It will probably shake enough and wallow out a hold where the hook is at thanks to the weight of the jighead until it finally falls out. As long as it's hooked in the lip it shouldn't interfere with it's feeding very much at all.

Sometimes it comes off, sometimes it doesn't. Think about how hard it is to get the hook out sometimes, even with pliers. (I'm moving to barbeless.)
