Fluke Fishing . . . Doing It Right??

Featured Replies

So today I bought some Skippy Fish (which are soft plastic jerkbaits since it seems a lot of people have not heard of them). Anyway, I really like the design and the action. Tail is extremely active and the colors really remind me of a shad coming to the surface and then back down to the bottom.

My question is how am I supposed to fish these with my spinning gear. I am using an AG Cardinal and AG Vengeance rod with P-Line Fluroclear 8lb. I seem to have a ton of slack in my line and it is very tough to keep the line in a good spot so to properly work the bait. Is there something I am doing wrong or is it something else?

Try fishing them texas rigged with no weight. Fish them like your walking the dog on a topwater lure.

Go on youtube and look up " Bass fishing the double zulu with kevin van dam "

It works higher in the water column and the action is unbelievable.

My favorite is the dropshot rig.

i throw it into the thickest buck brush and lay down and whatever most people would be flipping. weightless tx rig.

In situations like those, I will use a mono leader, Imo I find the mono gives the soft jerk bait more fluidity in its movement if that makes sense. Also hook size plays a role too.

Yep, I like 20# braid on a spinning reel with a 3' long 10# CXX leader.

x2 on this one

x3 on the weightless t-rig. IMO this is how the fluke was designed to be fished and where it shines. Jerking, twitching and dead sticking over submerged grass or anywhere baitfish are.

a fluke is SOOO much easier on a spining outfit, believe me, i tryed it with a baitcaster one time and it was just abnormal and did not fell right at all, i caught one that time, but still i didnt like the way it handled on a baitcaster

I like to work mine while using a rhythm in my head. Twitch, Pause, Twitch Twitch, Pause (and repeat). I work them over submerged vegetation close to the surface.

what i do is go ... 1 (pause ) 1,2, ( pause) 1,2,3( pasue a little bit longer after this one ) and repeat
