im looking into buying a pelican boat thats used and has never been registered and does not have a title how can i search the hull ID to make sure it isnt stolen or something? ive searched and apparently its possible but i cant find it

I'd be very cautious buying a boat with out a title. Maybe you should call the mfg and see what they have to offer in the way of info.

They probably don't title these. They don't for canoes, kayaks, and SUPs, so I wouldn't expect that here either. There should be a hull ID stamped somewhere. Use that to register the boat.

I'd guess it depends on the state.

In MA, you have to register any boat powered by anything other than sail, paddle, oars, etc. To register my trolling motor canoe, I had to produce a certificate of origin, along with the serial number. I also had to produce a document to prove the sales tax had been paid. I was then issued title papers.

The odd thing in MA is that they title the boat, the trailer, but not the motor, regardless of horsepower.

Your best bet is to contact the state agency that registers boats. They can best advise you on how to proceed.
