Spooling A Baitcaster . . . Quick Question

Featured Replies

Have my new Lew's TP and picked up some Yo-Zuri Hybrid 12#. I was spooling up and when I got to the end, I noticed the one side of my spool was thicker/higher/more fool. In other words, it appeared it spooled up uneven. How do I avoid this? I think it did this because when I tied the line on, the level wind was almost to the right side and the left side is where there is more line on the spool. Should I start spooling directly in the middle of the spool ( level wind directly in the middle of the spool) or is this normal?

I experience this when spooling up and reeling fast. Sometimes burning baits back can cause it too. I'd swear that the way I hold the reel with the line resistance being to one side of it rather than straight out in front can even affect which side gets heavily wound. But, I can't see the level wind being on one side when starting causing it. It's just one more trip across that one side than the other. The knot you tie around the spool might contribute. It would create a high spot on the reel's core and gather more line there on subsequent revolutions as you crank. For this reason, I try to center the knot and make it lay as flat as possible.

It happens. Sometimes just reeling a lure in will cause it too. I wouldnt worry about it. It wont hurt anything. It will straighten itself.

Also, when you pinch the line to apply pressure you may inadvertently interfere with the level wind laying the line. Pinch the line well ahead of the reel and try not to apply pressure to either side.

I don't feed the line through the level wind when spooling. I manually fill the spool so it's perfectly even for the last 75 yards or so.

Another thing that helps that is not mentioned that i have found helps is keeping rod and reel completely perpendicular to the line.

Uneven spooling is kept to a bare minimum and virtually non existent when I do this.

From my own observation, it seems that the uneven laying of line occurs most often when the spool is at optimum capacity where I am dealing with long casts in which I am retrieving line holding my rig at an extreme angle relative to the line's position.

Not always but it seems that's when it occurs to me. I have been told it does not affect reel performance but it sure looks weird, lol.
