Blue, you can tentitively count me in as a non-boater. Depends on if I have any thing going on with school that weekend. I would really like to go though. As my name says, I'm Drew.

It wasn't as bad as I was expecting. I only had to kick the trolling motor on high once we got to the far north end of the dam (wind coming from the southwest straight into it) other than that it wasn

So Blue, I gather from what I've read about Melvern that this is, like Milford, a SMB dominated lake vs. LMB - correct? Will apply the strategies accordingly :)

I had never seen Melvern before the last trip and my buddy Sean and I caught everything in that lake, yes including a cafish on a crankbait. as for the LMB vs. SMB, dont tell this lady she is dominated by the Smallies :)

You know it's going to be a good day when catfish bite the crankbaits. That's a sure telltale sign!

It is mainly a smallmouth lake but there is some largemouth in it. It's a lot like Milford in that it doesn't have many largemouth but when you get one it seems to usually be a pretty good one. My friend Jon who is going to be there caught one that was 5lbs 9oz out of there a year or two ago and I've caught them up to 4 1/2 pounds. Pretty much all the same things that work at Milford for smallmouth will work at Melvern.

I'll put you down as a maybe.

Allday, Thanks for the offer but my boat is a 24 volt. We will be fine even if it's typical Kansas wind. We can troll about 71 mph if the fish aren't biting.

71 mph? woah I'll bring my 20 # line for that then. If it comes to deep fishing, I'll bring my deep diving cranks and drop shot tackle. Well check your PM, I sent a recommended strategy for Melvern. We're gonna need strategy - we have Blue to contend with out there and all signs point to us playing on his home court at Melvern :)

So that's why Blue wanted it on Melvern huh? Maybe we can change it to LOZ, I know that lake pretty well.

Is LOZ = Lake of the Ozarks? Bet not many of us have a MO fishing license (I do, though). Been meaning to fish James A Reed Wildlife area too - heard good things about it. It's all good about Melvern - the lake structurally looks good on paper and I see it as an opportunity to go to someone's home court and play ball - Pittsburg Steelers did it a few years back in the playoffs. :)

Yeah LOZ is Lake of the Ozarks. I'd be fine with it there if it was closer, I got 5th in the last BASS weekend series tournament I fished there and would have won it if it wasn't for a silly rule they had at the time that no longer exists (how do you have the heaviest weight and not get 1st???). Melvern is far from my home lake, as much as I wish it was. It's just a really good lake more times than not in the fall. The main goal is for everyone to catch some fish and have a good time without having to drive 3 hours to do it (although some are driving more than that round trip). Honestly, barring some extreme conditions or weather changes, I think someone would almost have to try not to catch a fish in that lake in the fall. Another thing I like about it is you can fish something like a grub or crankbait and catch half a dozen different species of fish in the day without even trying :eyebrows:

I will vouch for that! Sean and I caught, Walleye, Whites, Smallys, LMB & Catfish all on the same crankbait! I even managed to catch my self with one! :) I left with a full cooler of tasty treats! NO SMB or LMB.

PS: Melvern has 2+ pound whites that are insane!!

I'm officially in for this outing. My school schedule looks to be clear for the 20th.

I'm heading to melvern in the morning. What crank were you using to catch those whites?

I did good with a black/chart. 1.5 for smallies but I caught most of my whites on a Mepps.

Let us know how you do. I was thinking about heading there on Sunday.

They seem to like smaller cranks down there for some reason. Strike King or Lucky Craft 1.0 size baits do very well. In the SK I like the chrome sexy shad and the lucky craft it's american shad. The smallmouth in my avatar at a Lucky Craft CBS Zero in american shad color. I've done well on several different shad colored squarebills or mid depth cranks in the fall but those are my favorites. They should start slamming 'traps pretty soon here, I'm talking make your wrist sore by the end of the day kind of bites. Chris is right about the whites, they are tanks down there and they'll hit about anything that moves when they get on the banks.

ok boys im ready for this shin dig to start and if any one is planing of fishing melvern soon and needs a tagalong id like to fish with who ever if u want to prefish it.

Yeah but don't be giving away all my spots if you go. Don't want anyone to know where they can catch a nice carp on a rattletrap like the one in your avatar :laugh5:

lol im not giving my amp comercial spot away or any others im just riding along sucka cheese!

I'm think I may try and fish out there sometime before the the shindig. The bass I was fishing for today were biting on red eye shads... It's getting to be that time. Gonna have to tie on a jerkbait too soon it seems.

How was the fishing today? Still trying to decide whether or not to make the long drive out there.

Well we made the trip to Melvern Today. at 3;30 am the forecast was for 5mph winds HOWEVER, by 5:30 am that had changer to 10-20 with gusts to 30mph!

So basically it was just as windy as our last shindig. That was the good part. The bad part is the lake is 5' lower than it was last time we were there. this left a LOT (MOST) of the cover dry on the banks...

All and all Today was a real grind. with the Zebra mussels cutting line on anything you tried to drag across the bottom and the winds preventing you from throwing any finesse baits it was a crank kind of day.

We caught a lot of fish but WE MADE A LOT OF CASTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1.0-1.5 was the best size and a shallow diver worked best. I tried a deep diver off and on all day but once it bounced off the bottom once or twice the line was nicked up and needed to be retied.

Peter had the best day catching everything under the sun including, Drum, Perch, Walleye, Whites, Smallys, LMB & a Catfish

The biggest lmb of the day went 16-17''? and I don't think we had a smallie over 15'.'

Thanks for the report. I may just wait a little longer to head out there. Any idea what the water temp was there?

  • Super User

Water temp was 68 this morning at daylight.

This is a pic of one of the DOZEN + Zebra rocks we snagged into and boated Today

.IMG_20120922_073948_zps988891fb.jpg

Thats the first time I have ever seen a zebra mussel before. I can see where that would be bad for your line!!!! I think we are just going to stay close to home and fish Smithville Lake in the morning.

If the wind cooperates I may try to get down there Wednesday. That's the first zeb covered rock I've seen from Melvern. I don't think I've ever seen one before anywhere down there actually. They can really be a pain for sure. Chance of rain and storms Wednesday so the chances of a good topwater or spinnerbait bite really tickles my fancy though.
