How To Fish The Drop Shot

Featured Replies

Looking for any advice and tips on how to fish the drop shot rig. I know how to rig, just not 100% sure how to fish it. Is it only used for vertical fishing?

I love youtube. Very good videos.

great videos hooah...aaron martens is the master of the spinning setup. love his vids, great insights

My one piece of advice would be don't be afraid to break the "standard" way of fishing it. I personally make long casts, move it a lot, and fairly quickly a lot of times with real good results.

I recently won a club tournament on a very heavily pressured lake here in Pa. The key with it was not whether it was fished vertical or casted, but rather once you made a cast or drop, let your weight fall, and then dead stick your worm, letting the worm fall slowly to the bottom. After 20 or 30 seconds, if you had no bite, reel in and make another cast. I was targeting Hydrilla patches in eel grass beds around 10 ft deep.

In Champlain, the bass prefer you keep a tight line and gently wiggle the worm in place. It all depends on where and when your fishing.

Get out there and experiment!!!

jr45, please view the vids and read the articles on drop shotting.

The secret is to let the bait move with the current.

Keep the line tight and just let the bait sit there without you moving it. The current and water movement will keep the plastic moving naturally.

Fish is straight down or cast it out.

Good luck.

It's not just a vertical method for me. I also like to flip it out around 20-30 ft, from the boat and work it back until it's vertical. I'll fish water from 4-20 ft deep this way.

I occasionally shore fish with the drop shot down to a foot or so.

I have caught fish on it both ways but my favorite way as of late and worked awesome this weekend is drift fishing with it verticle. Caught a few small mouth with it this weekend was working good. All in how your comfortable.
