Line Storage

Featured Replies

I keep all of my rods and reels inside in the winter months. Most of them still have line spooled on them and it has recently been spooled on. Should I take off the line and start fresh come spring? The next question I have relates to line storage. I know that with time line gets old after it has been wet / sun damaged but how about a brand new spool of line in the box? What is the best way to store unused spools of line? I plan on ordering a few spools of 1000yd line in different lb tests and I know that it may take a few seasons to run through these so how long will these last?

I´ve kept line spools for years in storage and the line is as good as new stored in a dark, dry place. This applies to nylon, FC and braided need no special care.

I'm using all my equipment 12 months of the year and everything is kept in my garage, for a good part of the year it's hot and humid here. I've yet to see any line whether already spooled or new in the box deteriorate. I had some 25# big game that was never used stored for quite a few years, needed a respool before an outing so I used it......it was just fine.

I keep all my extra line, etc. in a small rubbermade container stored in my fishin cabinets.

SirSnookalot-- you are very lucky to be able to use equipment 12 months of the year, also ive learned a alot from your post, post replies thank you. :handshake-147:

tbone you line on the reels will have a lot of memory come spring. You can run warm water over the spooled up line to lessen the memory and spray with line conditioner before you head for the water.

KVD L&L. The day before you decide to go fishing, hook the line to a tree, and begin walking back taking line off the spool. When you get about 3/4 of the spool off, spray some L&L on the spool. Reel in 1/4 of the line and spray again. Repeat this until you get all the line in. Then spray the spool before you go to bed, and again in the morning. If that doesnt do it, I dont know what will.

Will the L&L leave a residue on my reel?

No. As a matter of fact I spray my reel with it when Im done fishing, and wipe it with a cloth to clean it.
