Hello, everyone, tomorrow I am going on a big fishing shopping trip, and I wanted to know what line (not brand) do you recommend for my crankbait setup and my plastics/jig setup. What line is best for beginners? Easiest to cast? Sits even on the reel?

I would go 10 or 12 pound test mono for cranks and 17 or 20 pound flurocarbon for jigs.

Won't lower diameter line cut into the other layers of line?

Well I am not real sure why you don't want to know the brand, because that is probably the most important thing I consider when choosing a line.

For me, it isn't as much about the "lb test" but more about diameter. Larger lines will usually have more memory, but if you are casting heavy jigs, it shouldn't matter. However, if you are casting 1/4 oz weights on a T-rig, you probably want a little smaller line. As far as crankbaits go, the same can be said for line size as far as throwing smaller shallow divers versus larger deep divers.

I would say as a "generic" answer to go with 10 lb on the crankbait reel and 14 lb on the plastics reel.

Normally speaking, you only have to worry about the line "cutting" into the other layers of line when using braid. This usually occurs when one gets hung up and tries to pull the bait loose. It will indeed dig into the line. This doesn't happen near as often with Mono (although it can) when also trying to get your bait un-hung.

Use a line that comes from the manufacturer with an even spooling technology, make sure your level wind is in good operating order, and spool the line directly off the spool under tension.

IDK.........you tell us. Buy a spool and then 15mins later you will be an expert. Thats how it works around here from what I am told.

Yes suffix is good. 15-17# fluoro for your jig set up. Since you dont want to know brands, dont go cheap with fluoro. You get what you pay for. 10-12# mono or fluoro whatever your prefer for cranking.

I use it, like it, and have not found a reasonably priced mono I like better. This is what I have on most of my rods. I keep one with braid on it. Also picked up some 6lb for my spinning reel.

Another tip on getting line to lay flat and even on reels is to keep the reel flat without tilting it on its side.

Cranks -10 or 12#. Choose mono if topwater baits will be fished on the same outfit and floro if it is crankbait exclusive outfit.

Jigs/T-rigs. Choose 12-15# floro if you buy the good quality stuff. Talking $20-$50 a spool. If not jut use braid and call it good.

Crankbait.. i use PLine either 15lb-17lb floro, jig i use 17lb mccoy floro. If your looking for line on baitcaster, 10 and up is good, if you use light line on a baitcaster it causes backlashes, and spinning reels i go with 6-10lb mccoy floro with 12lb mono as the backing. Keep about an 1/8th inch of space in the spools. Hope i helped.

Ok thanks for the advice. I got the Sufix line and wow! What a difference! The line is never uneven on my Citica now.

If you look around you can find some great deals on larger spools of line. I picked a 1lb spool (5800 yards) of 10# yo-zuri hybrid for just under $30. I mostly fish with lipless cranks and spinnerbaits, so for me I felt like I won the lottery!
