Line For Crankbait Setup

Featured Replies

Just got a shallow cranking specific setup this past Xmas. Any line suggestions? I was thinking fluorocarbon. Poundage?

10 or 12. I would use line diameter as a guide.

I would go 10 to 14 depending on the type of cover and how deep you need the bait to run. I like mono better for cranking but many guys prefer flurocarbon. I think mono allows the fish to inhale the bait a little more before you set the hook and also the extra stretch can be good so you don't rip the hooks out of there mouth.

For banging stumps with square bills, I just use a similar set up to what I use for spinnerbaits, i.e. an abrasion resistant 17 or 20 lb line. For shallow cranking, I don't think that mono or fluorocarbon makes any difference. The rods I use for square bills are a little more tippy than what I like for my spinner baits, but I don't like the fiberglass cranking rods at all.

As you get to cranking deeper, line diameter makes a difference. I've found that Nano-fil helps your cranks dive the deepest, just don'd rub it into anything - at all. It is NOT abrasion resistant - at all.

My last few trips of the fall were on Truman Lake, and I wanted to get my Timber Tiger DC 16 a little deeper than 14 lb test would go. I got some of the new Berkley Armor coated line (which looks and performs suspiciously like the old Iron Silk line) in 10 lb test and it lasted a couple of days with almost no obvious abrasion issues. I threw around alot of deeper trees and bushes.

I haven't taken that line off the reel yet and all my stuff is on the bench for a few months - due to weather. We will see how it performs in the early spring as I bounce some deeper cranks off of deeper rocks (12 -18 feet deep)

I always had good luck with 12# BPS flouro and 10# Trilene 100% flouro. Now I'm trying 12# Seaguar Abrazx since I fish allot of rocks and wood.

10 - 15# fc or copoly. I use 12# Yo Zuri Hybrid.

Thanks for the advice. I was definitely looking more towards 17# Fluorocarbon. Guy at BPS recommended Seagaur Invisx. Has anyone used this or others that they like?

Two years ago I used 14# flouro all season. This past season I used 30 braid, with and without a leader. Going back to 14# flouro next year, it just feels better to me.

I don't have a lot of experience with fc line, but of all that I've used I like Sunline Sniper the most.

Perfect example of "different strokes." Noel and I fish the same water, with the same baits, yet I like and do very well with 20 lb braid, sometimes with, sometimes without a fluorocarbon leader. There is no right or wrong, other than I am clearly the better cranker between the two of us, but that has nothing to do with the line choice. LMAO

Hey, I can crank too!!! How come I don't catch any fish like you do? Problem must be similar to the real estate market.....location...location...location.

To the OP: I have fluoro on one reel only. It is 10 lb. Read too much about knot problems for me to invest heavily into fluoro. I stick with 8 lb mono on my Medium rods, and 12 lb mono on my MH rods. Haven't tried Yo Zuri yet, but eventually will.

I use nothing but P-line cxx for all cranking and spinner baits. I've used it for years.
