well there has been this new buzz about strike kings new lure called the red eye shad. Its basically a rattle trap but better profile and reflectent red eye(Hence the name) Has anyone used these and if so has it given you good luck or would I just be better of using my old rattle traps?

they arent excaltly new and yeah they work great. im sure they got alot of attention cuz of kvds classic win with them but he won a tournament down on the harris chain a few years back on it. The biggest difference between the redeye shad compared to other traps is that it quilvers as it falls but as far as any other comparisons go the redeye shad is just another lipless crankbait except kevin vandam endorses them due to sponsorship

the RES is just a modern trap in my opinion. I have success with both models.

Strike King, Bill Lewis, Xcalibur, Lucky Craft, Jackall, Cotton Cordell, Rapala, Spro, Sebile & sooooo many other companies all make lipless crankbaits.  Better yet, all of them will catch fish when used correctly.  I suggest trying out a couple of different brands until you find out which one you like the best.  You'll end up catching more fish on one of them which in turn will make you more confident in that particular bait.  With confidence in it you'll fish it more effectively.  Before long you'll be convinced it's the best lipless crankbait on the market.   

P.S. Most brands will need to have their treble hooks changed out & upsized.

There is no need to change the hooks on XCalibur,

River2Sea, Yo-Zuri, Lucky Craft, Sebile or Megabass

lures.

Honestly the red eye has pretty poor action compared to many of the others.  It just swims weird to me.  I rarely throw it.  I like the XCaliber much better.

Red Eye is a great bait for yoyoing and ripping out of the weeds, other than that there is better brands.

I got a big 3/4 oz red eye shad (bass pro spring sale...it was on sale). I got the big weight to yo-yo deeper water around 15+ feet.

....I hope it works good b/c I wont be able to see it all the way down there! I'll know if I catch a fish or 2 I guess. Looks good in the package tho!

I wonder if you got a defective bait, the Red Eye Shad is a well designed bait but I don't think Strike King is as consistent as Lucky Craft or some others in terms of quality control. This has been a very good bait for me, slayed them last fall on the Japanese shad color. It's never good to get a defective bait but considering it's modest price tag I can live with an occasional dud.

The red eyes are as good as any other lipless.  Used correctly, they're great.  They've got a nice wiggle as they fall, and like somebody else said, great to rip through weeds.  Theres other times when Rat'L'Traps are more effective, and times when Super Spots are better.  Like any lure, it all depends on what the fish want at that given time.

They are good baits but i much prefer the Excalibur XR50.
