I'll start off by saying I have the brand already picked out I just have a few questions I need.

I haven't used spinner baits very often. I want to get into running them more as a different option to jigs in the cover I fish. I just don't know what the best action length and weight is. I know a 4 or 5 gear feels better to me.

So question is what's the best length, action and weight for spinnerbaits if I were going to have a dedicated set up.

I use a 6' 6" MH Fast just because I didn't like longer rods when I first started fishing. I would go with a longer rod though because it will help you cast further and cover more water. If you're fishing really heavy slop, then maybe you want a Heavy, but again, I barely like fishing MH so I don't own any H rods.

I also use a MH/F but mine is 7'. I toss anything from 3/8 to 1/2. Just stick with what your rod is rated for.

I like my 6-8 M/XF for most spnnerbaiting, up to 1/2 oz. baits.

7'2 MH XF. I have thrown them on a 6'8 med fast, mostly pitching them under docks. I lke the mh a little better since we have alot of hydrilla and the extra strength is needed and i can make longer casts too.

I also use a MH/F but mine is 7'. I toss anything from 3/8 to 1/2. Just stick with what your rod is rated for.

True but with some rods, what's rated of the rod is to heavy.

I cant speak for JFrancho, but my Castaway 6'8 med doesnt feel overloaded with a 1/2 but it doesnt take much more than that. I usually use a 3/8 or smaller when im pitching it under docks on that rod.

I've found that what is and what ain't a decent spinner bait rod is subjective and varies a lot from person to person.  I like my spinner bait rods pretty stiff, and yet a little more "tippy" than my jig rods.   Years ago, I was hundreds of dollars into the search for a spinner bait rod that I "liked" rather than one where I felt I was "settling"

 

At the time AllStar Rods (prior to their purchase by Shakespeare) made a spinner bait rod, endorsed by Zell Rowland.   It is 6'8", MH with a more flexible tip than their jig/worm rods.   They work good for me, I bought several of them, I still have 3 and that is what I use for spinnerbaits.

 

If I had substantially more funding, I'd go with the Loomis spinnerbait rods.   Thats just me.  I have a buddy, who is probably a better spinner bait fisherman than me, at least he throws them more than I do and  he prefers a more flexible, almost parabolic bend in his spinner bait rod.  So, who knows?     Get one and fish it, should you not like it buy a slightly different one.  That is what I did.

Yea I understand that.  Mine goes to 1oz and I won't go that big cause I don't think mine can handle a 1oz lure.

Just look at the lure ratings - their "M" is usually rated for 1/2 or 5/8 oz. max.

I use a 7'1" HF action rod with 30lb braid. This particular rod fishes more like a MHMF action rod though. I personally like a bit more parabolic action in my spinnerbait rod.

I find the action is a matter of balence between spinner bait weight and action. This is very similar to matching crank bait size/depth with the rods weight. So, I use a MHF for anything 1/2 ounce or more and MF for anything less than a 1/2 ounce.

I have a Texas made Allstar titanium spin/jig model and it's a great rod. MH with more tip. Wish they were still all made in Tx.

Very true, lure weightings will tell you a lot.

 

I would be careful though, many spinnerbaits are actually heavier than what they are advertised as weighing. Someone had a thread on it where they weighed different types of baits and the spinnerbaits were heavier than their listed weighting. I feel a 7' MH/F rod works perfect for my spinnerbait needs up to 1/2oz, but I have been throwing more 5/8oz and 3/4oz and my Loomis MBR844 IMX works very well for this. Any H/F rod will do for the heavier spinnerbaits.

 

I feel the smaller rods like 6'8'' and 6'6'' are great for target fishing with spinnerbaits. They work well for the purpose and they are much easier to cast to a spot than the 7' rods for me at least. I grew up fishing spinnerbaits on a 6'6'' MH/F rod and it did a fine job at it, I can just cast longer with the 7' rods which my situation calls for more. 

 

For line, I use 12-15lb FC it helps get the line deep and is good at not getting tore up by sharp objects.

I'm in the minority, but I use a 7MHMF, also use it for cranking. The reel is a 21 ipt, this is for anything over 3/8 to an ounce. Smaller I use a 7MMF with a reel that is 25ipt. I don't like fast or extra fast tips I end up pulling the lure out of the fish's mouth

6' 10" MH xf Shimano Compre with 30 lb 832 and a Daiwa Advantage HSTA. Very good for 3/8+ oz. spinerbaits (all I really throw).
